Our Rights - Our Future
30 years ago, the World Conference on Human Rights took place in Vienna. Up until today, it remains an indispensable milestone in the field of international human rights protection. From 14 to 25 June
1993, more than 10,000 participants, including representatives of more than 170 states and about
815 NGOs, worked towards a common goal: To turn the promise of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights (1948) Into reality. Through the conference and the Vienna Declaration, which includes an action program for human rights, human rights could be anchored at various levels and thus contribute significantly to the protection of human rights. Nevertheless, multiple and interlocking crises continue to challenge the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In addition, there are new aspects, such as globalisation, digitalisation and climate change. Therefore, Austria is committed to joint efforts to protect and promote human rights. On the occasion of the anniversary of the Vienna World Conference, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together
with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), will send a clear signal for
human rights or 5 and 6 June 2023. Various events will draw attention to the fact that there can be no lasting peace and security without numan At a high-level symposium, human rights experts from various fields will discuss the universality and Indivisibility ot human rights, their relationship to technology, and human rights as a solution to global challenges. Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia
This day is celebrated globally on 17 May, because on this day in 1990 the World Health Organization decided to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disorders.
Austria stands by this year's motto
"Together always: United in Diversity" not only today, but every day. In dialogue with civil society organisations and people advocating for LGBTIQ+ rights, Austria is internationally committed to the protection and rights of LGBTIQ+ persons in all multilateral fora.
Together with like-minded states, Austria calls for the elimination of laws and practices worldwide that persecute and discriminate against people on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity. Because Austria's core concern is to put an end to violence in all its forms.
On the occasion of IDAHOBIT, Austria's representations around the world send a clear sign for the equality of LGBTIQ+ people - for example by flying rainbow flags, organising events around LGBTIQ+ issues and participating in gay pride parades. Beyond the campaign period, Austria supports relevant projects and advocates for the mandate of the Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) of the UN Human Rights Council.

On today's Europe Day, we honour the EU's foundation based on our shared values including democracy, peace, prosperity and security. Although these values are currently under attack. Russia's aggression has only proven our European solidarity and cohesion.
On this 9th May, it is even more important to emphasise the value of a united Europe full of ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity: Exactly 73 years ago, in 1950, the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented his idea for the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community as a new form of political cooperation in Europe. The states of Europe tied their key industries closely together economically to secure long-term peace in Europe - the cornerstone of our EU today!

Below you may find his message in appreciation of this award:
“KAZGUU has become a second home for me - apart from the yellow colour of the building reminding of the Vienna Schönbrunn Castle, it is you the students in front of me that gave me energy and strength to be there for you and lastly to experience KAZGUU as an open place for visitors to come and opinions to flourish.”

On April 12th, Maqsut Narikbayev KAZGUU University hosted the Roundtable on the Role of Diplomacy in a Turbulent World with the participation of the Ambassador of the European Union to Kazakhstan, His Excellency Kestutis Jankauskas, the Ambassador of Estonia to Kazakhstan, His Excellency Tomas Tirs and the Ambassador of Austria to Kazakhstan, His Excellency W***y Kempel.
The speakers emphasized the critical role of diplomacy in resolving conflicts and crises worldwide, highlighting the significance of preventing escalation and achieving lasting peace through diplomatic efforts. The discussion covered topics such as the role of the UN Charter and human rights in general in promoting stability, and the EU's experience as a peace project.
The panellists acknowledged the challenges and limitations of diplomacy in today's digital age, including social media, speed, security of communication, and cyber security and warfare. Moreover, they noted the limitations of the international legal system, particularly in negotiating with unrecognized actors. However, Ambassadors agreed that diplomacy remains crucial in resolving disputes peacefully, as "talking is always cheaper than fighting".
The Roundtable also provided an opportunity for students to ask questions about regional integration, cyberattacks, and the future of diplomacy in conflict resolution. Overall, the discussion highlighted the need for continued efforts and collaboration among nations to address current challenges and achieve lasting peace.
