The Sri Lanka Basketball Referees Association (SLBRA) successfully concluded its officiating duties at the University Games 2025, held at the Rajarata University indoor courts. The event showcased exceptional collegiate talent and sportsmanship, with SLBRA ensuring fair play and high standards of officiating throughout the tournament.

Over the course of the games, SLBRA referees demonstrated professionalism, consistency, and deep knowledge of the sport, contributing to the smooth ex*****on of over 45 matches and fostering a competitive yet respectful environment. Their presence was instrumental in upholding the integrity of the tournament and supporting the development of university-level basketball in Sri Lanka.

The association extends its appreciation to Rajarata University for its excellent facilities and hospitality, and to all participating teams for their spirited performances. With the successful completion of this event, SLBRA reaffirms its commitment to nurturing basketball across the island and looks forward to future collaborations that elevate the sport at every level.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚

In a move intended to propel Sri Lankan youth Basketball to new heights, the Mercantile Services Basketball Association (MSBA) recently extended an unprecedented opportunity for the country’s Under-18 teams to participate in the prestigious MSBA League Tournament. This initiative aimed to provide school players with invaluable exposure, enabling them to compete at a high level and engage with seasoned athletes from corporate teams, including many current national players.

However, despite the clear benefits to both young players and the growth of Basketball in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association (SLSBA) has blocked this initiative, citing the Ministry of Education's lack of approval, a claim the Ministry vehemently denies, instead pointing to the SLSBA as the obstruction. This decision is disappointing and symptomatic of deeper issues that have long plagued youth Basketball development in Sri Lanka.

𝐀 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭
The MSBA League Tournament is widely regarded as one of the most competitive platforms in Sri Lankan basketball. By allowing Under-18 teams to participate, MSBA sought to provide these young athletes with an elite environment that would enhance their skills, foster teamwork, and encourage them to aspire to greater levels of achievement. Competing against corporate teams, including national players, would have been a powerful motivator and learning experience for school players eager to elevate their game. This would also have been a perfect opportunity for them to be considered for corporate roles once they leave school, as many corporate heads would have been witnessing these young talents.

This initiative was not just an isolated effort but part of a larger vision. MSBA’s goal was to establish a training pool of young players who would practice regularly, creating a foundation for the Under-18 FIBA South Asia qualifiers. By denying Under-18 teams the opportunity to participate in the MSBA League Tournament, the SLSBA has hindered efforts to cultivate this critical pool of talent.

𝐒𝐋𝐒𝐁𝐀’𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞
Unfortunately, this latest decision is part of a longstanding pattern by the SLSBA that has hampered youth Basketball. SLSBA has consistently failed to align with the standards set by the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation (SLBF), the governing body for Basketball in the country. This noncompliance has led to widespread inefficiencies, which are reflected in the poor management of local school tournaments.

One of the main issues is the appointment of non-competent individuals to key roles within SLSBA, often influenced by connections and external power plays. As a result, school tournaments have suffered from disorganization, a lack of proper scheduling, and insufficient officiating. Despite having an approved referees association under the SLBF, SLSBA has regularly employed non-qualified referees affiliated with the Ministry of Education to officiate games. These individuals often lack the necessary training and do not follow FIBA guidelines, even though Sri Lanka is a FIBA member and should adhere to these international standards. This disregard not only undermines the quality of competition but also compromises the development of young players.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚
This lack of foresight and adherence to standards affects not only young players but also the long-term development of Basketball in Sri Lanka. The sport’s growth depends on identifying and nurturing young talent, providing platforms to excel, and connecting them with mentors who can guide their development. Each missed opportunity means fewer players capable of representing Sri Lanka at an international level, fewer fans to support the sport, and fewer role models for future generations.

Countries that excel in sports foster a pipeline of talent through collaboration between school programs, private leagues, and corporate partnerships. By turning down these partnerships, the SLSBA is isolating youth Basketball from potential growth avenues, further contributing to the stagnation of the sport.

𝐌𝐒𝐁𝐀’𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭
Despite these challenges, MSBA remains steadfast in its mission to support and grow Basketball in Sri Lanka. MSBA’s commitment to nurturing talent, offering competitive platforms, and engaging the community is stronger than ever. This resolve was demonstrated recently when MSBA supported the SLBF in organizing two international tournaments held in Sri Lanka for the Under-16 and Under-18 teams, exemplifying the MSBA’s commitment to elevating youth Basketball at both the national and international levels.

While SLSBA’s decision is disappointing, it only strengthens MSBA’s resolve to find alternative ways to support young athletes and bring the Basketball community together for the benefit of the sport. MSBA will continue advocating for these opportunities, with or without the support of those who should be championing the future of youth Basketball in Sri Lanka. The organization calls upon other stakeholders, including parents, coaches, and Basketball enthusiasts, to join the conversation and demand progress for the sake of young players who deserve better.

𝐀 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞
If Sri Lanka is to have a thriving Basketball community, it is crucial to break down these bureaucratic barriers that hold back potential. The decision to exclude Under-18 teams from participating in the MSBA League Tournament is a setback, but it also serves as a wake-up call. True progress in youth Basketball requires collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to the future of the sport.

It is time for the SLSBA and the Ministry of Education to reconsider their stance, to listen to the needs of the Basketball community, and to recognize the harm caused by restrictive policies. MSBA urges these organizations to join in building a brighter future for Sri Lankan Basketball by supporting initiatives that genuinely benefit our young athletes.
