🌐 Exploring the Impact of Germany's Supply Chain Act on Sri Lanka's Key Industries
On December 10th, marking International Human Rights Day, we at FNF Sri Lanka launched a comprehensive policy paper on the German Supply Chain Act and its implications for Sri Lanka’s tea and apparel industries.
The event, held at Cinnamon Grand Colombo, brought together industry representatives, including key stakeholders from Sri Lanka's tea and apparel sectors. Following the presentation, a thought-provoking panel discussion featured:
🔹 Niraj De Mel, Former Chairman of Sri Lanka Tea Board
🔹 Shyamali Ranaraja, Attorney-at-Law
🔹 Sudaraka Ariyaratne, Research Consultant and Author of the Publication
🔹 Yohan Lawrence, Secretary General of the Joint Apparel Association Forum
The session was moderated by Sharon Mascarenhas.
Key Highlights:
🔵 Sri Lanka’s ethical production standards position it as a potential beneficiary of the Act.
🔵Compliance costs are a concern, particularly for SMEs.
🔵The tea industry remains largely unaffected, while the apparel industry has seen some adjustments, including additional audits.
📢 Recommendations include enhancing indirect supplier compliance, creating economic incentives, and raising awareness among vulnerable communities. This dialogue underscored the importance of balancing sustainability, human rights, and competitiveness in global trade. 🌍
