ලාංකීය අර්තාපල් වගාවේ අතීතයෙන් බිඳක්...
​අපේ දිනපතා ආහාර වේල රසවත් කරන, කුඩා දරුවන්ගේ සිට වැඩිහිටියන් දක්වා කවුරුත් ප්‍රිය කරන "අර්තාපල්" (අල) සඳහාම වෙන්වූ ජාත්‍යන්තර දිනය අදට යෙදී තිබෙනවා. බැලූ බැල්මට අර්තාපල් අපේ දේශීය බෝගයක් නොවුණත්, එය ලාංකීය ජන ජීවිතය සහ ගොවි ආර්ථිකය සමඟ තදින්ම බද්ධ වී අවසන්.
​මේ විශේෂ දිනයේදී, ලංකාවට අර්තාපල් පැමිණි ඉතිහාසය සහ එහි ප්‍රගතිය වෙනුවෙන් කැපවූවන්ව අප අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම මතක් කළ යුතුමයි. 👇
​📜 ලංකාවේ අර්තාපල් ඉතිහාසයේ සන්ධිස්ථාන:
​මුල්ම ආගමනය (1789): ලංකාවට මුල්ම වරට අර්තාපල් හඳුන්වා දීමට උත්සාහ කර ඇත්තේ බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය ජාතික ආණ්ඩුකාරවරයෙකු වූ ලොඩ් මැකරෝනි (Lord Macaroni) විසිනි.
​ක්‍රමවත් වගාවේ ආරම්භය (1824 - 1831): ලංකාවේ ක්‍රමවත් ලෙස අර්තාපල් වගාව ව්‍යාප්ත කිරීමට මූලික අඩිතාලම දැමුවේ එවකට බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය ආණ්ඩුකාරවරයා වූ සර් එඩ්වඩ් බාන්ස් (Sir Edward Barnes) මහතායි.
​ප්‍රථම වගාබිම: අර්තාපල් වගාව සඳහා සිසිල් දේශගුණයක් අවශ්‍ය බැවින් බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයන් මුල්ම වරට අත්හදා බැලීම් සිදුකළේ නුවරඑළිය (විශේෂයෙන්ම සීතාඑළිය) ප්‍රදේශයේ ය.
​👑 ලංකාවේ අර්තාපල් වගාවේ පියා: "නෝමන් ගුණතිලක"
​බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයන් බෝගය හඳුන්වා දුන්නද, එය ලාංකීය පොළොවට ගැළපෙන පරිදි පර්යේෂණ මට්ටමින් සහ වාණිජ වගාවක් ලෙස සාර්ථකව ස්ථාපිත කිරීමට දිවි හිමියෙන් කැපවූයේ නෝමන් ගුණතිලක මහතායි.
​1950 සහ 60 දශකවලදී කෘෂිකර්ම දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව හරහා, නුවරඑළිය සහ රහන්ගල (වැලිමඩ) පර්යේෂණ මධ්‍යස්ථාන මූලික කරගනිමින්, බීජ අල නිෂ්පාදනය සහ රෝග පාලනය පිළිබඳව එතුමා කළ විප්ලවීය පර්යේෂණ නිසාම එතුමාව "ලංකාවේ අර්තාපල් වගාවේ පියා" ලෙස ඉතිහාසගත වී තිබෙනවා.

​විදේශ විනිමය ඉතිරි කර ගැනීම: වාර්ෂිකව පිටරටින් අර්තාපල් ආනයනය කිරීමට වැයවන බිලියන ගණනක ඩොලර් රට තුළ ඉතිරි කර ගැනීමට දේශීය නිෂ්පාදනය ඉහළ නැංවීම.
​දේශගුණික විපර්යාසයන්ට මුහුණ දීම: පස සුරකිමින්, නව කෘෂි තාක්ෂණය සහ දේශගුණයට ඔරොත්තු දෙන වගා ක්‍රමවේද ගොවියා වෙත රැගෙන යාම.

A Glimpse into the History of Potato Cultivation in Sri Lanka...
​Potatoes, a favorite ingredient from young to old that enhances our daily meals, have their own international day celebrated today. Although potatoes are not an indigenous crop to Sri Lanka, they have become deeply intertwined with the daily lives and agricultural economy of Sri Lankans.
​On this special day, we must look back and honor the history of how potatoes arrived in Sri Lanka and those who dedicated themselves to its progress. 👇
​📜 Milestones in Sri Lanka's Potato History:
​The First Introduction (1789): The very first attempt to introduce potatoes to Sri Lanka was made during the British colonial era by Lord Macaroni.
​The Dawn of Systematic Cultivation (1824 - 1831): The foundation for systematic and widespread potato cultivation in the island was laid by Sir Edward Barnes, the British Governor of Ceylon at the time.
​The First Cultivation Site: Since potato cultivation requires a cool climate, the British conducted their initial trials in the Nuwara Eliya (specifically the Sita Eliya) area.
​👑 The Father of Potato Cultivation in Sri Lanka: "Norman Gunatilake"
​While the British introduced the crop, it was Mr. Norman Gunatilake who dedicated his efforts to successfully establishing it as a commercial crop tailored to Sri Lankan soil through extensive research.
​During the 1950s and 60s, working through the Department of Agriculture, he led revolutionary research on seed potato production and disease control based at the Nuwara Eliya and Rahangala (Welimada) research stations. Because of this monumental contribution, he is historically honored as the "Father of Potato Cultivation in Sri Lanka."

​Strengthening the Local Rural Economy: Sustaining the main livelihood of thousands of farming families in areas like Nuwara Eliya, Badulla (Welimada, Keppetipola), and Jaffna.
​Saving Foreign Exchange: Boosting local production to save billions in foreign exchange spent annually on importing potatoes from abroad.
​Facing Climate Change: Taking new agricultural technologies and climate-resilient farming methods to the farmers while preserving our soil.

​A special awareness program on utilizing the 'eSabha' mobile application was successfully held at the Committee Hall of the Galle Municipal Council. The session aimed to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and accessibility of public services within the municipality.
​The official briefing was conducted for the Hon. Mayor of Galle, Sunil Gamage, and the honorable members of the council.
​Representing the facilitation team, Dr. Chathura Welivitiya (CEO of HELP-O), alongside Project Manager Mr. Lahiru Udumalagala and Mr. Uditha Malavaraarachchi, actively participated and led the session.
​During the program, extensive discussions focused on how the 'eSabha' app bridges the gap between local government authorities and the public, empowering citizens to access services digitally while enabling the council to manage urban operations more effectively.
