Statement by the Spokesperson on the prosecution of two Reuters journalists in Myanmar
Bruxelles, 09/07/2018 -
The court decision today to press charges against Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo under the Official Secrets Act of 1923 threatens fundamental freedoms, a free media and the public’s right to information in Myanmar.
Since the arrest of the journalists on 12 December 2017 for their reporting on the situation in Rakhine State, EU diplomats have observed every court hearing and the EU has continuously raised the matter with the Myanmar government.
Media freedom and pluralism are essential pillars of any democracy. Journalists and media workers must be able to work in an environment free from fear of intimidation, harassment, undue arrest and prosecution, and require protection in order to promote transparency and accountability in any society.
The European Union expects the charges against the two journalists prosecuted for merely exercising their rights to freedom of expression and carrying out their jobs to be dropped and for them to be released immediately so they can be reunited with their families and resume their vital work.

The Statement of the Embassy of Sweden Section Office Yangon over the court's decision to charge Reuters’ journalists under the Official Secrets Act
The Embassy of Sweden Section Office Yangon would like to express our gravest concern and alarm over the decision today to charge Reuters’ journalists Ko Wa Lone and Ko Kyaw Soe Oo under the Official Secrets Act. As we stated already on the 100th day of their detention, we believe they have done nothing wrong and that the charges against them should have been dropped. Now on their 210th day in detention, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo face a trial and charge that could carry the sentence of fourteen years imprisonment.
The work of independent media is extremely important in order to inform the public about what occurred in Rakhine State in the aftermath of the attacks on 25 August last year. The investigative journalism that Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo represents a crucial service to the society and should be protected. For Myanmar to continue on its path towards democratization, it is clear that more work needs to be done to strengthen and ensure freedom of the press and of the media. The decision today to charge Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo under the Official Secrets Act of 1923 underscores the need for Myanmar to amend or abolish outdated laws and regulations that threaten these fundamental freedoms.

Thanks again to the CEELI Institute for your collaborations with PRLP Myanmar in this great program for our Myanmar Judges. The final session of the “Judging in a Democratic Society” program has finished in Yangon.
The final session of the “Judging in a Democratic Society” program finished in Yangon yesterday. It was an exceptional experience and the first CEELI program with Burmese judges. Our long-standing work with independent regional Burmese lawyers is now continuing in Mawlamyine, and we hope to be able to contribute to bridging the gaps between these two worlds in this unique country.
