Sometimes I get asked why I insist on mounting prints and drawings myself when I could easily send my clients to a frame maker.
The reason is simple. Once the frame is closed there is no way of knowing what was done inside. And I cannot as a conservator let an object that was in my care be mounted in a manner I cannot guarantee as appropriate and ethical. Sadly the truth and the damage only emerges once the frame needs to be opened. At which point not only is the procedure much more difficult but the print would have already suffered years of damage from unsuitable materials and techniques.
