Lake Malawi Level Update

The situation got critical as the water nearly overtoppled the barrage deck.

As such, it necessitated the Authority to immediately operate the gates at the barrage to safeguard the structural integrity of the barrage structure.

The operation was done last night and the release was raised to 1, 450 000 litres per second.

As at 8 AM today, the water level has receded by 10cm, and the Authority is now releasing 1,440,000 litres per second.

Meanwhile, the Authority's engineers at Kamuzu Barrage are keenly monitoring the developments, in respect of Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services forecast.
