Lilongwe district council to spend Mk117.6 billion in 2026-2027 financial year
The outgoing chairperson for the Lilongwe district council Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Gibozi Mphanzi, has urged CSO’s to take issues to do with development activities seriously as well as maximizing local revenue collection to ensure that citizens are represented meaningfully and improve the financial status at the council.
Mphanzi made the remarks on Thursday during the engagement meeting between the CSO’s, media practitioners and council, which was aimed at appreciating the 2025-2026 financial year budget as well as tracking the highlights of the 2026-2027 financial budget as a form of accountability and transparency.
Mphanzi emphasized that it is important that community members understand that the budget is there to serve their needs and therefore encourage them to be very strategic when developing action plans that will meet their needs.
“We can clearly see that the government is doing its best in allocating enough funds in different sectors but for these funds to serve the people better, there is need for coordination between the council and the community in pointing out what is important to be prioritized in the budget, like the issue of irrigation which most communities seem to put a blind eye.” He said
Speaking during the presentation of the budget highlights, the Monitoring and evaluation Officer, Blessings Makhiringa, highlighted that the 2026-2027 budget has increased from 40 billion last year to, 117.6 billion this year due to the reformed K5billion Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
Makhiringa said CDF alone is getting a total of 95.5 billion, social cash transfer program 9.3 billion, education sector 3.5 billion and health sector 2.6 billion, to ensure development growth.
He commended the council for the well-developed people centric budget and said that the council is dedicated to improve the overall service delivery as Malawi heads towards the Malawi 2063 agenda through its hardworking and dedicated team that is result oriented.
He added that the council has also rolled out a number of activities that will help generate more revenue through the license and permit charges, market establishments, fees and service charges as well as income from their commercial undertakings, to ensure people in communities get the services they need.
He therefore said he is already impressed with the few projects that have already been implemented from the beginning of the financial year and urged stakeholders and duty-bearers to continue being transparent and accountable on various projects to be implemented moving forward to ensure smooth implementation and quality delivery.
