Today the The Greenbelt Authority - GBA, led by Chief Executive Officer Eric Dudley Chidzungu is hosting the Presidential Unit on Manifesto Implementation at Mlambe Irrigation Scheme in Mangochi.

The unit is continuing with its visits to GBA projects with an aim of understanding existing needs in the projects for interventions planning purposes.

Government commits to speed up GBA's Karonga project

Government says it will ensure that the Nthola-Ilola Irrigation scheme project under the Greenbelt Authority is completed soon enough for it to start fully benefitting Malawians.

Chief Advisor to the President on manifesto implementation, Honourable Henry Mukhuna said this on Thursday during an engagement meeting with key stakeholders of the project in Karonga District.

He said the project was very key in Malawi's agriculture sector, hence the speed in visiting it in order for the government to structure its further support as soon as possible.

"I would like to register the government's commitment to support this project, and give you assurance that government will hold GBA's hand in completing this project. This is the first project we are visiting since institution of our unit, and that should assure you that the government is prioritizing it," he said.

He noted that, by its design, the Project would support the current administration's vested interest in attaining food security and creating worth through massive rice exports.

"We will take a clear message to the President regarding the steady progress made so far, and the people's eagerness to have the project completed," he added.

He further hinted that the manifesto implementation unit would check on how the project can benefit from other funding avenues such as the Constituency Development Fund so that its completion is expedited.

Earlier on, Principal Group Village Headwoman Mwangolera implored the Presidential Advisor to take a message to the president to maintain government support the project as it stands as a future for the Karonga rice.

"This project is going to be a game changer for the rice community of Karonga, and Malawi as a whole, so we are asking for continued support from the new administration," she said.

On his part, Paramount Chief Kyungu commended the Greenbelt Authority for notable progress made in the project.

Kyungu said it is imperative that government steadily funds GBA to maintain the speed and quality of work portrayed.

The Greenbelt Authority is constructing a 1000-hectare rice scheme, and a Multi-Billion Kwacha rice processing factory set to revolutionize the Karonga rice culture, but currently, the Authority is constructing 370 hectares of the farm land.

Today the Greenbelt Authority engaged stakeholders at Salima District Council in a discussion to map the way forward for the cultivation of maize at over 500 hectares at Nyunyu Farm in the District.

GBA is planning to cultivate on the new farm as part of its initiative to increase land holding and production capacity.
