The Malawi Free Secondary Education policy for 2026 is indeed a landmark reform, generating both significant optimism and serious concern.Positive impacts based on the latest reports.

POSITIVE IMPACTS

· Increased Enrollment and Re-enrollment: The most immediate success has been bringing students back into the classroom. According to the government, the policy has already led to over 1,800 students re-enrolling after having dropped out due to unaffordable fees . This directly tackles the low secondary school completion rate, currently at only 4% .
· Dismantling Financial Barriers: The policy removes core financial obstacles for families, specifically tuition, examination fees, and School Development Fund (SDF) contributions in public day schools . This is particularly crucial for vulnerable groups like girls, children with disabilities, and rural students who are disproportionately excluded by costs .
· Long-term Economic and Social Investment: Aligned with the Malawi 2063 vision , the policy is seen as an investment in human capital. By educating its large youth population, Malawi aims to build a more skilled workforce, which studies suggest can boost individual earnings and national GDP.
