Other than the turbocharger that we discussed last time, another force induction system used on vehicle is the Supercharger. Instead of using exhaust gas to turn the turbine, supercharger using an accessory belt to drive the pulley, thus rotating the impeller to draw air into a compressor housing, the high velocity low pressure air is converted into low velocity high pressure air via a diffuser, thus it then draws into engine combustion via intake manifold to improve the engine performance.

In the modern era vehicle, you might heard of the word "turbocharger" more and more frequent compare to decades ago. A turbocharger is a component added to the engine to introduce additional power to the output of an engine. The principle of the operation of turbocharger started from using exhaust gas pressure to drive the turbine, thus it rotates the center shaft which connected to a compressor. While the compressor turns, additional compressed air is being drawn into intake manifold which in turn improve the engine performance. A simple diagram is shown below that explains briefly about how it works.

A turbocharger was more frequently used on performance vehicle such as sport car. Nowadays, sometime it is fitted on a modern passenger vehicle with a smaller capacity engine. A turbocharger is usually quite durable, but it's lifespan is greatly affected by how the vehicle being driven as well as how well the vehicle is maintained. A faulty turbocharger could cause symptom like loss of power, unusual noise, etc.

Similar to the other sensors that we discussed previously, the function of the throttle position sensor (TPS) is to measure the opened position of throttle control valve which then transmit the data to engine control module so that the module could deliver such data to other components to ensure proper air-fuel ratio would be delivered to engine. The defect of TPS could cause symptoms like poor acceleration, poor fuel economy, engine jerking, engine difficult to start or engine stall. A failed sensor has to be replaced promptly to ensure it would not cause consequence damages to other components of the vehicles.
