On December 16, 2023, the YSEALI Council of Malaysia (YCOM) hosted the , marking , YSEALI's 10th anniversary. This event was the grand finale of four impactful community projects in Penang, Sarawak, and Johor, focusing on mental health awareness, tree planting, and maritime environmental education.
The festival kicked off with a speech from Mr. Manu Bhalla, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur ( ), followed by an inspiring keynote by our alumnus, YB Syerleena Abdul Rashid (.abdrashid ), Member of Parliament for Bukit Bendera. A special session titled ‘Reflections on – Celebrating a Decade of Empowerment’ featured four alumni sharing their experiences and aspirations for YSEALI's next decade.
Highlighting the festival, YCOM presented the inaugural YSEALI Alumni Malaysia Awards, honouring five outstanding YSEALI members:

Date : 4 to 5 November 2023 (Saturday and Sunday)

Wonder who our speakers are?
Graduated with a degree in biotechnology, Lyvia Chong's passion in conservation made her take a leap to study sea turtles for her master degree. She was the lead researcher and pioneer to set up a public viewing laboratory in a resort. Her role was then switched from a full-time scientist to an operation manager of the research unit. Her experience with YSEALI has shaped her into a better character, personally and professionally. She now embarks on a new journey in ensuring quality education for refugee children.

Wonder who our speakers are?
Jasmin Irisha Jim Ilham helps mobilise young people on climate action. She is the Climate and Environment Consultant at UNICEF Malaysia, where her work focuses on addressing climate change and environmental degradation impacts on children and advancing children’s rights to a healthy environment. Previously, she was the former Manager of the Malaysian Youth Delegation to the UNFCCC COP, and have held research positions at the Earth Institute, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development and Universiti Sains Malaysia.
Jasmin has degrees in MA in Climate and Society from Columbia University and BSc. (Hons) Environmental Science from University of Nottingham Malaysia.

Introducing one of the Co-Founders of YCOM, Matthew Wong
Matthew is an alumnus of YSEALI Fall Academic Fellowship 2019 for environmental issues and natural resource management. He is passionate about science, engineering and environment as he also holds a PhD in engineering and environments. His research interests are in renewable energy, particularly biomass-based fuel like biodiesel as he envisions a world powered by renewables and sustainable resources. Matthew has been constantly working on educating the younger generation who are curious about science and their environment, as a part of his outreach programme to raise public awareness towards the topic of sustainability.

Introducing one of the Co-Founders of YCOM, Ad Peris
Don is a YSEALI 2018 alumnus for Environmental Issues at the East-West Center, Hawaii. Previously known as the most annoying and talkative member of his family, he used his ability to win the Malaysia FameLab Science Communication competition in 2020. Now, he is the Programme Manager of Sustainable Tourism at Reef Check Malaysia based in Mersing. With a major in Oceanography and a minor in comedy, Don continuously work to build public awareness towards environmental conservation and sustainability by utilising his science communication skills and self-proclaim comedic ability.
