Pre-colonial Namibia was an agricultural society, primarily involved in the cultivation of cattle, and living off the natural resources of the land. The tribes and clans such as the Nama, Herero and numerous other peoples, had adapted to the harsh and arid climate of Namibia.

When the German colonists arrived in 1884, traders and settlers introduced the latest textiles, fi****ms, tools and other manufactured goods into Namibia, replacing or supplementing traditional local products. The arrival of European settlers introduced products which had a profound impact on local economies and traditional trade networks.
