Captain Cyber's Week 3 tip: your device is one of your most valuable and most vulnerable possessions.

Your phone stores your messages, photos, contacts, banking apps, and personal information. If it is compromised, so is everything on it.

Here is how to protect it:

- Keep your operating system and all apps updated. Updates patch security vulnerabilities that cybercriminals exploit.
- Only download apps from official stores such as the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Avoid using public Wi-Fi for banking, shopping, or any transaction that involves personal information.
- Lock your device with a strong PIN, password, or biometric security.
- Back up your data regularly so you do not lose everything if your device is lost, stolen, or compromised.

What a remarkable day it has been! 🎓🛡️

CRAN and NAM-CSIRT wrapped up a highly productive One-Day Masterclass on Cyber Incident Handling, Response and Crisis Communication at the 9th National ICT Summit at the Ongwediva Trade Fair Center.

The day was enriched by the invaluable contributions of cybersecurity experts from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) - 2019, including Mr. Isaac Nhamu, Prof. Gamundani, Ms. Viktoria Shakela, and Dr. Gabriel Nhinda. Their expertise across sessions on cyber incident preparedness, detection, decision-making, and crisis communication elevated the quality of today's engagements significantly.

A special thank you to all speakers, participants, and the NAM-CSIRT team for making this masterclass a resounding success. Namibia's cyber future is in capable hands.

Captain Cyber's Tip for this week's Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Phishing scams are one of the most common cyber threats in Namibia, and they are getting harder to spot.

A phishing message is designed to trick you into clicking a link, downloading a file, or sharing personal information. It may arrive as an email, an SMS, a WhatsApp message, or even a social media post.

Here is how to spot one:

- It creates a sense of urgency: "Your account will be closed in 24 hours."
- It asks for your PIN, password, or banking details.
- The sender's email address or number does not match the organisation it claims to be from.
- The link leads to a website that looks real but has a slightly different address.

If something feels wrong, trust that feeling. Do not click. Do not share. Report it.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Captain Cyber is kicking it off with the most important tip of all: your password.

A weak or reused password is one of the most common ways cybercriminals gain access to personal accounts, banking apps, and business systems.

Here is what a strong password looks like:

- At least 12 characters long
- A combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols
- No personal information such as your name, date of birth, or phone number
- Different from every other password you use
- Enable two-factor authentication on every account that offers it. It adds a second layer of protection even if your password is compromised.

Follow Captain Cyber every Tuesday this October for a new cybersecurity tip.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and Captain Cyber is ready.

This October, NAM-CSIRT and CRAN are bringing Namibia four weeks of practical, actionable cybersecurity guidance. Every Tuesday, Captain Cyber delivers a new tip designed to help every Namibian stay safe online.

The threats are real and they are growing. In the second quarter of 2026, NAM-CSIRT detected 513,921 cyber vulnerabilities across Namibia, a 39.8% increase from the previous quarter and recorded 161,547 cyber events, a 56.7% increase. Cybersecurity is not a concern for someone else. It is a concern for all of us. Read the report here https://nam-csirt.na/download/cybersecurity-constituent-newsletter-q02-2026/

This year also marks a significant milestone for Namibia. The National Cybersecurity Incident Management Guidelines 2026 were officially launched in April, giving our country a practical framework to detect, respond to, and manage cyber threats at a national level. Access the guidelines here https://nam-csirt.na/national-cyber-security-incident-management-guidelines-2026/

Follow this page and turn on notifications so you do not miss a single tip from Captain Cyber this October.

Kudumo runs his store from anywhere there's Wi-Fi.

Orders. Client messages. Payments.
All flowing through free café Wi-Fi.
All completely visible to Glitch.

Until they weren't.

✅ A VPN encrypts your connection, Glitch cannot read what he cannot see
✅ A backup means ransomware has nothing to hold over you

That hard drive was sitting in Kudumo's bag for months. Unused. Collecting dust. Ransomware almost made him wish he'd plugged it in sooner.

Almost!

If you run a business, even a small one, even from a café, your data is worth protecting.

Do not wait for Glitch to remind you.
