*Ohanaeze Ndigbo Urges Caution Amid Calls for Protest*

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has issued a statement urging Igbos both within Nigeria and abroad to refrain from participating in protests against the economic hardships facing the country. This call comes amidst growing calls for nationwide demonstrations against the government's handling of the economy.

In a statement signed by the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, he emphasized the need for caution and dialogue in addressing the prevailing economic challenges. Chief Iwuanyanwu revealed that he has been inundated with pleas from various quarters urging the Igbos to join in the protests against the government. However, he stressed that while the concerns of the people are valid, resorting to mass protests may not be the most constructive approach at this time.

The statement acknowledges the frustrations and hardships experienced by Nigerians across different regions, including the Igbo community. It also underscores the importance of finding sustainable solutions through engagement with relevant stakeholders and government representatives. Chief Iwuanyanwu highlighted the need for unity and cooperation in advocating for positive change and urged Igbos to explore peaceful and constructive avenues for expressing their grievances.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo reaffirmed its commitment to championing the interests and welfare of the Igbo people while advocating for inclusive governance and equitable distribution of resources. The organization emphasized the importance of fostering unity among all ethnic groups in Nigeria to address the nation's challenges collectively.

In conclusion, Ohanaeze Ndigbo's call for restraint reflects a commitment to promoting dialogue and peaceful resolution of grievances. While acknowledging the frustrations felt by many, the organization advocates for a measured approach that prioritizes engagement and collaboration to address systemic issues effectively. As Nigeria navigates through these challenging times, the role of responsible leadership and constructive dialogue becomes increasingly vital in charting a path towards sustainable development and prosperity for all its citizens.

Damian Okafor's recent open letter condemning the decision of the Ebonyi State APC not to choose Chief Austin Umahi as their candidate for the forthcoming Ebonyi South Senatorial rerun raises important questions about political dynamics and democracy. While Okafor's concerns should be acknowledged, it is essential to critically evaluate his arguments and their implications.

Okafor expresses deep disappointment and frustration at the news that Chief Austin Umahi was not chosen to replace his brother, Sen. David Umahi, in the senatorial race. He claims that this decision has left him sleepless, restless, and in a state of depression. However, such a visceral reaction should not overshadow the importance of democratic processes and principles.

Firstly, Okafor references a committee set up by the state party chairman to determine zoning arrangements for contestable positions in Ebonyi State. This committee's recommendations reflected the collective will of Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone, which decided to zone the senatorial ticket to Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area. While Okafor insists that this decision should be upheld, it is crucial to remember that democracy is not static but dynamic, allowing for changes in political discourse and decisions.

Furthermore, Okafor asserts that attempting to influence the ticket out of Uburu would lead to voter apathy and numerous legal challenges. It is vital to recognize that political decisions should not be solely based on fear of litigation or popular sentiment but on adherence to democratic principles, party regulations, and the best interests of the constituents.

Okafor also mentions the importance of not picking an unpopular candidate to avoid repeating past election disappointments. While the desire for a strong candidate is understandable, democracy is about the people's right to choose their representatives, and the party's internal processes should reflect this.

In conclusion, Damian Okafor's open letter reflects his deep concern and emotional investment in the political process in Ebonyi State. However, it is essential to remember that democracy requires an adherence to rules and principles, even if they do not align with individual preferences. Political decisions should be made with fairness, transparency, and accountability in mind to ensure the continued integrity of the democratic system

TITLE: EDUCATION IN IGBO SOCIETY: HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE AND CURRENT TRENDS
Written by Nwokwu Solomon Chukwuemeka (okenepehu)

INTRODUCTION

The Igbo people, one of Nigeria's largest ethnic groups, have a rich history of education deeply embedded in their culture. From traditional oral knowledge transmission to modern formal education, the Igbo society has undergone significant transformations in its approach to learning. This article delves into the historical evolution of education in Igbo society and explores the current trends that shape its educational landscape.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Before the advent of formal education, the Igbo society relied heavily on oral tradition for knowledge transmission. Elders, or "dibia," played a central role in educating the younger generation through storytelling, proverbs, songs, and folktales. This method not only imparted practical skills and cultural values but also preserved the Igbo heritage.

The arrival of Christian missionaries during the 19th century introduced Western-style education to Igbo society. Schools were established, often in collaboration with the local communities, where subjects like reading, writing, and arithmetic were taught alongside Christian doctrine. This period marked a shift from the traditional to a more structured form of learning.

CURRENT TRENDS

Today, education in Igbo society continues to undergo transformations influenced by both traditional values and modern advancements. Formal education remains highly valued, with schools offering a curriculum that blends Western knowledge with Igbo cultural studies. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of qualified teachers, and economic disparities still persist in some regions, hindering equal access to quality education.

One notable trend is the rekindling of interest in indigenous knowledge. Efforts are being made to integrate traditional practices and teachings into the curriculum, ensuring that younger generations learn about their cultural heritage alongside mainstream subjects. Initiatives promoting Igbo language preservation and cultural awareness have gained momentum, promoting a well-rounded educational experience.

Additionally, technological advancements have begun to shape education in Igbo society. The proliferation of smartphones and internet access has enabled e-learning and online resources, bridging gaps in access to information. This trend has the potential to democratize education and provide learning opportunities beyond geographical boundaries.

CHALLENGES AND THE WAY YOU FORWARD

Despite the progress, challenges remain. Gender disparities in education persist, particularly in rural areas where cultural norms may discourage girls from attending school. Socioeconomic inequalities also hinder access to quality education, as marginalized communities face barriers to enrollment and completion.

To address these challenges, collaborative efforts involving government agencies, NGOs, and local communities are crucial. Investments in educational infrastructure, teacher training, and equitable resource distribution can contribute to a more inclusive education system. Additionally, empowering women and promoting awareness about the importance of education are key steps toward achieving gender parity.

CONCLUSION

Education in Igbo society has come a long way from its roots in oral tradition to the modern formal system. The integration of cultural heritage, technological advancements, and a focus on inclusivity are shaping the educational landscape. By acknowledging the historical context and addressing present challenges, Igbo society can pave the way for a future where education is not only a means of personal growth but also a tool for preserving the rich cultural tapestry of the Igbo people.

The recent statement from the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) regarding the Nigerian Military's stance on not intervening in the government raises some concerns. While it is positive that the military is publicly reaffirming its commitment to democracy, the need for such a statement itself highlights the fragility of the democratic system in Nigeria.

The fact that there have been calls for military intervention suggests a lack of faith in the civilian leadership's ability to address pressing issues. The DHQ's assertion that these calls are "highly unpatriotic and wicked" may seem dismissive of legitimate concerns that citizens might have about the state of governance.

Furthermore, the DHQ's declaration of loyalty to President Bola Tinubu might raise questions about the military's independence and impartiality. The military's role should be to serve and protect the entire nation, rather than aligning itself with specific political figures.

While the statement emphasizes the military's commitment to democracy, the reality on the ground could be different. History has shown that military interventions in politics can be driven by a range of factors, including perceived corruption, instability, and governance failures. Relying solely on verbal assurances might not be sufficient to prevent such scenarios.

Ultimately, the Defence Headquarters' statement serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between a strong democratic system and the potential influence of the military. It underscores the need for a transparent, accountable, and effective government that addresses citizens' concerns and maintains their confidence in the democratic process.

About seven States share boarders with Niger Republic; Sokoto, Kebbi, Kastina. Jigawa, Zamfara, Yobe and Borno. There's a serious implications for our country if military force is used without exhausting all the diplomatic channels. As democrats and representatives of the people, we should urge the senate to invoke section 5 subsection (4) (a) and (b) of the 1999 Constitution as amended to guide president Tinubu on his planned military action.

_Title: GlaxoSmithKline's Exit Sends Shockwaves Through Nigeria's Economy_

Today, there's deep concern and sadness in Nigeria as GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a pharmaceutical giant, announced its decision to exit the country after 51 years of operation. This departure is a major blow to the nation's economy, as it reflects the growing challenges faced by multinational companies in Nigeria.

The reason cited by GSK for leaving is disheartening, as they no longer see Nigeria as a viable business environment that can be anchored on productivity. This move highlights the cumulative poor management of the country's economy, resulting in the closure of local businesses and the departure of international companies.

Peter Obi, a prominent figure, expressed his reactions to the news, stating that the departure of multinationals from Nigeria is a sign of the dire state of the nation's economy. He emphasized the need to shift the economy from consumption to production, which includes encouraging and supporting local and foreign investments.

GSK's presence in Nigeria had a significant impact on the nation's job market and human capital development. Their manufacturing facility in Agbara, Ogun State, employed over 400 highly skilled workers and indirectly provided employment opportunities for thousands of Nigerians. Now, with their exit, many will lose their jobs, and the country's poverty index is likely to worsen.

Obi emphasized the importance of creating an environment that attracts and sustains multinational investments in Nigeria. He believes that focusing on production will encourage investors to stay and expand their operations in the country, leading to job retention and economic growth.

The exit of GSK from Nigeria is a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective economic management and policies that foster a conducive business environment. To achieve greatness, Nigeria must prioritize productivity and encourage both local and foreign investments in the country. Only then can the nation's dream of prosperity and growth become a reality.
