MAN O’ WAR NIGERIA, OYO STATE COMMAND CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD WITH A LEADERSHIP AND PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION:
Empowering Voices, Inspiring Change;

Man O’ War Nigeria, Oyo State Command, Female Squad Unit, joined the world to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child with a leadership and public speaking competition held at the Man O’ War Conference Hall, Army Children School, Iwo Road, Ibadan.

The event, themed “The Girl I Am: Using My Voice and Education to Lead the Change I Want to See in My School, My Community, and My Nation,” aimed at empowering young girls to utilize their voices and education as instruments for leadership and societal transformation. This initiative aimed Man O’ War Nigeria’s continuous commitment to community development and youth empowerment through civic and moral education.

The program featured participation from four notable secondary schools, TMM Secondary School, Love Foundation College, Oyinlola Comprehensive School, and Yetab High School, each represented by ten students and a teacher. It provided a platform for the girls to express themselves, showcase their talents, and imbibe leadership values that inspire confidence and responsibility.

Distinguished guests and senior officers graced the occasion, including the National Commander, NC Adedamola Gbenga (MIPM, MSS, MSR), ably represented by ANC AbdulSemiu Oluwafemi Sanni, Chief of Staff to the National Commander; MC Yekeen Lukman O, State Commander; Comdr Okadonor Austen, and other dignitaries. Their presence reinforced the organization’s support for girl-child education and leadership development.

The competition was assessed by a panel of judges comprising DMC Olasupo Sunday, ASM Agboola Ifeoluwa, and Pat Adepoju Samson, all seasoned officers with expertise in public communication and leadership assessment. Participants delivered speeches in two phases; a 7-minute main presentation and a 3-minute summary, where they passionately addressed the theme, articulating perspectives on leadership, self-discovery, and societal change. They were evaluated based on clarity, confidence, composure, content, and overall presentation.

In her welcome address, SM Salako Azeezat Olanrewaju, Officer-in-Charge of the Female Squad Unit, expressed profound appreciation to the State Commander for his support for female inclusion in Man O’ War activities. She explained that the competition was strategically designed to build self-esteem, encourage self-expression, and empower young girls to become proactive contributors to nation-building. According to her, “Every girl child has a voice that deserves to be heard, and through platforms like this, we help them discover their potential to lead.”

While the judges compiled the results, participants engaged in interactive sessions on Safe School Practices, Personal Hygiene, and Leadership Influence. Patriot Alatise Adeyemi delivered an inspiring motivational talk, urging the students to pursue excellence, stay focused on their dreams, and uphold discipline and integrity in all endeavors.

After a keenly contested and inspiring competition, Love Foundation High School emerged as the overall winner, receiving a cash prize of ₦50,000, while Oyinlola Comprehensive School came second with ₦30,000, and TMM Secondary School took third place with ₦20,000. Yetab Comprehensive School came fourth and was commended for their impressive performance and teamwork.

Each participant received a school bag, sanitary pads, mathematical set, pair of socks, water bottle, and a customized notebook as tokens of encouragement. Certificates of participation were also presented to all participating schools in recognition of their dedication and active involvement in promoting education and leadership development among girls.

A memorable highlight of the event was the ceremonial decoration of Miss Oyetunji Mercy, the overall winner from Love Foundation High School, as the State Commander of Man O’ War Nigeria, Oyo State Command, for a day. She symbolically assumed command responsibilities, performed official duties, and was later escorted back to her school in the official command vehicle, an inspiring gesture that demonstrated leadership in action and left a lasting impression on all attendees.

In his closing remarks, MC Yekeen Lukman O, the State Commander, commended the Female Squad for their innovation and commitment to girl-child development. He emphasized that empowering the girl child is essential to building a balanced and progressive society, reiterating the Command’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote leadership, discipline, and civic responsibility among youths.

The event concluded with a group photograph session capturing moments of joy, pride, and unity among students, officers, and guests. The competition not only celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child but also reaffirmed the belief that when girls are given the right platform and encouragement, they can lead meaningful change in their schools, communities, and the nation at large.

Nigeria @65: Youth Must Shape Aspirations With Today's Opportunities

I congratulate fellow Nigerian youth as our beloved nation celebrates 65 years of independence – a milestone for reflection, pride, and renewed commitment to the future.

As young Nigerians, many of us only read about the struggles that won us freedom. We were not there during the colonial resistance, the turbulence of the civil war, or the many difficult phases that shaped our national story. But while we may not have fought those battles, we are called to fight a new one: the task of building the Nigeria of our dreams.

Our aspirations must no longer be tied to yesterday’s struggles but to today’s emerging opportunities. Our generation is uniquely blessed. We live in an era of unprecedented technological innovations, global interconnectedness, and borderless economies. These are opportunities our parents and grandparents did not have. It is our duty to seize them, transform them into solutions, and chart a new course for our nation.

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recognized this responsibility and has initiated many youth-focused programmes to ensure that young Nigerians can thrive and become truly independent, both economically and in terms of personal development. These include:

* The Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA), a digital learning and empowerment hub equipping youth with skills in technology, entrepreneurship, and civic leadership.

* The 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme which is aimed at developing a globally competitive digital workforce.

* The Youth HelpDesk, which is a direct support platform linking government to young Nigerians.

* The Circular Economy Youth Empowerment Initiative for Climate Action, which offers training and engagement for youths in green jobs and climate-friendly enterprises.

* Digital Literacy 4 All (DL4ALL), which is an Intervention to ensure every young Nigerian gains digital skills for the modern economy.

* Skill Up Artisan Programme, which targets the upskilling of artisans to enhance employability and competitiveness.

* Yo! Health, an Intervention to promote health awareness, wellness, and preventive care among youths.

* YouthCred, which targets the increase in the access of young entrepreneurs to finance.

* Youth Data Protection and Awareness Programme to safeguard young people’s digital identities.

* Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP), which creates work opportunities and bridging employment gaps.

* The National Health Fellows Programme to engage youth in health service delivery and innovation.

* SME Support for Young Entrepreneurs for the purpose of strengthening small and medium enterprises as engines of job creation.

The aforementioned youth programmes and many others are not mere policies; they are pathways to true independence, one that is about economic empowerment, self-reliance, and human development. As young people, we must take advantage of these opportunities to better our lots and improve our well-being.

I must also use this opportunity to appreciate Nigerian youth for the overwhelming reception given to the planned National Youth Conference. The Organising Committee has worked tirelessly to ensure we deliver a world-class conference. However, the need to guarantee national spread and inclusivity in participation has required us to carefully review the expressions of interest received so far. With this process now gradually being concluded, the Youth Confab will commence in due course. The government is fully conscious of the issues that necessitated the conference, and we will ensure its outcomes respond directly to the yearnings and expectations of Nigerian youth.

At 65, Nigeria looks to its young people with renewed hope. The struggles of the past brought us freedom; but the opportunities of today demand that we turn that freedom into prosperity. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stands ready to support us to achieve all our legitimate goals. This is our time, and we must seize the opportunities advanced by the Renewed Hope Agenda to attain our desired progress.

Happy 65th Independence Anniversary!

Ayodele Olawande
Honourable Minister for Youth Development

MAN O’ WAR NIGERIA REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SAFE SCHOOL PROGRAMME AT NATIONAL COMMAND WORKSHOP

In continuation of the Workshop of the National Command Officers of Man O’ War Nigeria, held at the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre (CLTC), Abuja, participants engaged in a series of capacity-building sessions aimed at strengthening the organization’s leadership structure and operational capacity. The workshop aimed the need for renewed commitment to national service, discipline, and effective community engagement.

Delivering a lecture on the theme “The Safe School Programme: The Man O’ War Approach,” Alhaji Danjuma Ochidi emphasized the importance of adequate preparation in confronting the task of securing schools across the country. He noted that the role of Man O’ War in safeguarding educational environments must be proactive, strategic, and deeply rooted in community cooperation.

According to him, the core objective of the Safe School Programme is to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining access to school premises. He stressed that curbing the menace of kidnapping of students and pupils, alongside protecting the lives and properties of staff and learners, must remain a top priority for the organization.

Alhaji Ochidi further highlighted key factors in safeguarding schools, including proper perimeter security, structured patrol systems, and the establishment of clear communication channels between security stakeholders and the school management. He underscored the need for vigilance and rapid response mechanisms in cases of attempted breaches.

He particularly emphasized the critical role of intelligence and information-gathering units, which, according to him, play a central role in surveillance and in preventing security threats before they escalate. He encouraged Man O’ War senior officers to deepen their skills in intelligence collection, reporting, and analysis.

Furthermore, he called for stronger efforts to curb violence and social vices within and around schools. He stressed that preventive measures must go hand in hand with sensitization programmes for students, parents, and community members to reduce the likelihood of insecurity taking root in school environments.

The lecturer also pointed out that fostering mutual understanding and cooperation with host communities is essential for the success of the Safe School Programme. Building trust, strengthening partnerships, and maintaining open dialogue with local stakeholders, he said, would ensure safer and more resilient school environments.

The workshop reaffirmed the commitment of Man O’ War Nigeria to supporting national security initiatives and contributing meaningfully to the safety of schools, communities, and the country at large. Participants pledged to take the lessons learned back to their commands and apply them toward strengthening Man O’ War’s role in safeguarding lives, properties, and the future of Nigeria’s youths.

Mr. Adamu further explained that as a volunteer security and community development organization, Man O’ War Nigeria is uniquely positioned to complement the efforts of formal security agencies. According to him, collaboration between both parties would not only boost intelligence gathering but also strengthen public trust in security measures across local communities.

He commended some units and state commands for their exemplary efforts in this regard, citing the Niger State Command as a model in demonstrating commitment to community safety and grassroots security initiatives. He urged other commands nationwide to emulate such proactive approaches.

Highlighting practical ways Man O’ War can contribute to tackling insecurity, the resource person pointed out the importance of community surveillance, early warning systems, and robust intelligence sharing. He added that continuous engagement with schools, religious institutions, and youth groups remains vital in curbing violence, kidnapping, and other social vices.

The workshop reaffirmed the resolve of Man O’ War Nigeria to take a more active role in national security architecture, especially in areas of intelligence gathering, conflict resolution, and public sensitization on safety and civic responsibility. Participants pledged to return to their respective commands with renewed commitment to duty.
