TACKLING BOKO HARAM INSURGENCY.
By Egwu Emmanuel Anene.

The Boko Haram insurgency hit the Nigerian space in 2009 with chaotic uprising in Maiduguri and Bauchi and arrived the global scene with the bombing of the UN house, Abuja, in 2010. Believed to be fighting to install an Islamic caliphate, the Boko Haram terrorists have killed over 15,000 people in different parts of Nigeria and have since, pledged allegiance to Islamic State, chaired by Abu al-Baghdadi. The Nigerian government- negligent at the dawn of the insurgency- is making military efforts to contain the senseless massacres by the sect. Military personnel have made huge gains, claiming to have reclaimed large areas seized by the insurgents. Despite these gains, the insurgents have remained lively, hitting targets. This underlines the fact that fighting Book Haram need go beyond military offensive.

In arresting Boko Haram insurgency, efforts need be made to figure out the issues that gave birth to it. These issues include corruption, unemployment, zero or limited access to education, adulteration of religious sermons, poverty and leadership failure. These issues are key attributes of our society. According to UNESCO, over nine million children of school age are out of school in Nigeria. Unemployment and poverty loom unabated, fuelled by poor entrepreneurial climate, which has contracted investments and limited jobs. World bank suggests Nigeria ranks 170 out of 187 sampled nations with friendly business climate. This is dangerous for a country of 180 people.

Religious leaders have shifted from core religious teachings to sermons of prosperity, radicalism and extremism. Corruption is a core norm in our polity, while leaders (rulers) stink affluence at the expense of the electorates. All these anomalies gave birth to Boko Haram.

To curtail Boko Haram, authorities need be more proactive and sincere in tackling these aforementioned issues. While military action remains a key component of the war against insurgency, we may be wasting our time, resources and more lives if efforts are not effected towards addressing key issues such as poverty, unemployment, corruption and limited access to education. Until these macroeconomic magnitudes are resolved, the larger Nigerian population will remain prone and vulnerable to extreme ideologies.
