For Nigeria a New Tax ID System
The federal government, through the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has introduced a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system for all taxable individuals and businesses in Nigeria.
This means that the "TIN" (Taxpayer Identification Number) system - the old verification system - that you or your business previously used is being replaced. Moving forward, this new Tax ID will be your single, official tax identity.
Every individual or business that pays tax in Nigeria will now have one unified Tax ID to handle all tax-related activities across federal, state, and local tax systems.
The new Tax ID system will also replace the current TIN Validation Application Programme Interface (API) presently used by Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), banks, and other institutions.
But why this new policy? What are the expected benefits?
It is expected that this new policy harmonising all tax issues will improve tax administration, streamline tax processes to make them easier and faster, reduce duplication of taxpayer records, increase transparency and accountability, plug revenue leakages and harmonise taxpayer information nationwide.
So, key benefits of the new policy to individuals and businesses include:
• One Identity for Tax Matters: You will use a single Tax ID for all tax transactions.
• Simpler Processes: Tax registration, filing, and payments will become easier and more organised.
• Better Transparency: Government agencies can properly track and manage taxpayer records.
• Improved Accountability: The system is expected to significantly reduce tax fraud and revenue leakages.
• Unified National Database: Taxpayer information will be aligned across all levels of government.
Not a New Tax on People and Businesses
It is important to note that this new policy DOES NOT introduce a new tax! It only introduces a new identification system to improve how existing taxes are managed in Nigeria as part of ongoing reforms to strengthen public finance, improve service delivery, and build a more efficient tax system for national development.
Notice for Individuals, Organisations and Institutions on the new Tax ID System:
Organisations, banks, or government agencies that validate taxpayers' status and require access to or integration with the new Tax ID platform are advised to contact the relevant departments for guidance:
• For Individuals, Small Enterprises, and Business Names: Contact the JRB at [email protected] to set up the new integration.
• For Large Corporate Entities: Contact the NRS at [email protected] to gain access to the new Tax ID API.

FG Moves to End Dependence on Imported Textiles
The federal government is taking deliberate steps to restore the textile industry.
In what many industry stakeholders have described as a major breakthrough, Nigeria has successfully produced 10,000 Made-in-Nigeria T-shirts - made from wholly Nigerian textile - within six months under a pilot phase of the National Cotton, Textile and Garment Industrial Transformation programme.
The development is more than the production of ordinary T-shirts. It represents a renewed national effort to rebuild Nigeria’s industrial capacity, create jobs, empower local manufacturers, and reduce dependence on imported textiles and garments.
For decades, the collapse of many textile industries across the country led to massive job losses and weakened local production. Several factories shut down due to high energy costs, influx of cheaper imported fabrics, inadequate infrastructure, and limited financing opportunities.
As a result, Nigeria became increasingly dependent on imported clothing and textiles despite possessing abundant cotton production potential.
The current initiative seeks to reverse that trend.
Under the programme, government agencies are working with manufacturers, development partners, financial institutions, and private sector stakeholders to revive the cotton, textile, and garment sector as a major contributor to national economic growth.
The sector has the capacity to generate millions of direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians, particularly women and youths involved in farming, tailoring, fashion, logistics, marketing, and manufacturing.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen local industries by encouraging value addition within Nigeria instead of exporting raw cotton and importing finished products at higher costs.
It is worthy to note that increasing local production will help conserve foreign exchange, stimulate industrial development, and improve the country’s manufacturing base.
The programme further aligns with the federal government’s broader economic diversification agenda aimed at promoting non-oil sectors capable of driving sustainable growth and employment.
In addition, a keen look at countries with strong manufacturing sectors achieved industrial growth by supporting local production and building competitive domestic industries.
Nigeria’s renewed focus on textiles is therefore seen as part of a wider effort to reposition the nation as a productive economy.
For local cotton farmers, textile workers, fashion entrepreneurs, and young Nigerians seeking employment opportunities, the initiative offers renewed hope that the sector can once again become a major source of national prosperity.
As Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen local production and promote Made-in-Nigeria goods, the successful production of 10,000 Nigerian made T-shirts may well represent the beginning of a larger industrial transformation capable of restoring confidence in the country’s manufacturing potential.
Indeed, from cotton farms to factory floors and fashion markets, Nigeria appears determined to weave a new story of economic growth, self-reliance, and national development.

Ebola Prevention: NOA Ogun State Director Urges Residents to Stay Alert and Take Precautions
The Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Ogun State Directorate, Aishat Bolanle Tiamiyu, has called on residents of Ogun State and Nigerians at large to remain vigilant and strictly observe preventive health measures against the threat of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
Mrs Tiamiyu emphasized this in a press statement released today in Abeokuta, the need for heightened public awareness, personal hygiene, and collective responsibility in preventing the spread of the deadly virus.
According to her, Ebola remains a dangerous viral disease capable of spreading rapidly through contact with infected persons, body fluids, contaminated objects, and unsafe burial practices. She stressed that prevention remains the most effective weapon against the disease.
Mrs. Tiamiyu urged residents to maintain proper hygiene by washing hands regularly with soap and clean water, avoiding unnecessary physical contact with sick individuals, and immediately reporting any suspected symptoms to the nearest health facility.
She also advised citizens to avoid the consumption of dead animals or improperly handled bush meat, while encouraging communities to remain calm but proactive in adhering to public health guidelines issued by relevant authorities.
“The safety of our people must remain a collective priority. We must all stay informed, remain cautious, and support government efforts aimed at protecting public health. Early reporting and responsible behavior can save lives,” she stated.
The NOA Director further called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, market associations, youth groups, transport unions, and community stakeholders across Ogun State to intensify grassroots sensitization efforts on Ebola prevention and health safety practices.
Mrs. Tiamiyu reassured residents that the National Orientation Agency in Ogun State would continue collaborating with health authorities and relevant stakeholders to promote accurate information, counter misinformation, and encourage preventive actions among citizens.
She urged Nigerians not to spread panic or unverified information capable of causing fear, but rather rely on credible updates from government health agencies and medical professionals.

Among the concerted efforts introduced by the federal government in the last week, include the convening by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), in collaboration with relevant MDAs, of a National Cross-Border Surveillance Stakeholder Engagement to strengthen surveillance at Points of Entry and address gaps in response to recent outbreaks.
Similarly, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has placed the aviation sector on high alert over the renewed outbreak, ordering stricter health surveillance and screening measures at international airports across the country to prevent the possible importation of the disease.

FG Orders Mandatory Drug Tests for Secondary School Students
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to introduce mandatory drug testing for secondary school students across the country, as part of efforts to curb rising cases of substance abuse among young people.
This initiative will include drug screening for students, particularly at the point of admission into secondary schools, with impromptu periodic tests to follow at least once every academic year during their stay in school.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the increasing use of substances among teenagers and the impact on their health, academic performance, and overall mental health.
The policy is being introduced in collaboration with relevant agencies focused on education and drug control, with the aim of identifying cases early and encouraging intervention before substance use becomes more severe.
Students who fail the first drug test will undergo counselling and initial treatment as determined by school authorities. Those who test positive a second time will be referred to professionals for further treatment and specialised attention. Students who continue to test positive after a third round of testing, treatment and rehabilitation, may be temporarily suspended from the school environment.
Authorities believe that this new policy will help reduce drug abuse in schools, create safer learning environments, and encourage healthier lifestyles among students.
Supporters of the policy note that early detection will help parents, schools, and healthcare professionals provide timely guidance and counselling to affected students.
The new policy highlights the government’s renewed focus on addressing drug abuse among adolescents and strengthening preventive measures within Nigeria’s education system.

Nigerians Urged To Vote For Credible Candidates In 2027 General Elections
Nigerians have once again been urged to vote according to their conscience by supporting credible candidates during the forthcoming 2027 General Elections.
The call was made in Abeokuta by the Ogun State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mrs. Aishat Bolanle Tiamiyu, while featuring on the Pan-Yoruba political awareness programme “Ayekooto” on Sweet 107.1 FM.
Mrs. Tiamiyu advised Nigerians who are yet to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to do so without delay in order not to deprive themselves of their civic rights. She stressed that eligible citizens should take advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which runs from May 11 to July 16, 2026.
According to her, the exercise also provides opportunities for corrections such as change of name, address, and age.
She further encouraged voters to check the list of eligible voters that will be displayed by INEC in various wards and local government areas before the elections, instead of waiting until the last minute.
Speaking on proper voting procedures, Mrs. Tiamiyu emphasized the importance of correctly thumbprinting ballot papers for candidates of choice in order to reduce the number of void votes to the barest minimum.
The NOA Director also warned Nigerians against engaging in any form of violence before, during, and after the elections, stating that anyone found culpable would be handed over to security agencies and made to face the full wrath of the law.
She advised parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against being used by desperate politicians as thugs to foment trouble.
Responding to questions on the relationship between the NOA, INEC, security agencies, and other stakeholders, Mrs. Tiamiyu explained that all the bodies are critical stakeholders working together toward the successful conduct of elections in the country.
In conclusion, she reiterated that the NOA would not relent in its efforts to educate and sensitize Nigerians on electoral procedures and guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections.
