OGSG/OGSTEP STRENGHTEN SCIENCE EDUCATION WITH SAFETY CONSCIOUS LABORATORY TRAINING

‎ With the aim of ensuring a safe, effective and sustainable utilisation of rehabilitated laboratory equipment and chemicals provided for 21 flagship State Secondary schools and Technical Colleges, the State government, through the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), a World Bank supported initiative, has organised a day capacity-building training for Heads of Science Departments in Technical Colleges and Senior Secondary Schools across the State.

‎ Delivering her goodwill message during the training at Abeokuta, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, (MOEST) Mrs. Mariam Oloko, noted that it had been the mission of the Ogun State Government to align with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) standards, a goal which could only be achieved through the commitment and alertness of educators, commending the organisers for initiating the timely and impactful training.

‎ She added that the programme was organised to guard against laboratory hazards, stressing the importance of safety consciousness in science teaching and learning, urging participants to take the training seriously.

‎ Oloko revealed that over 2,000 classrooms in secondary schools and technical colleges across Ogun state had been rehabilitated, alongside other critical infrastructure upgrades, applauding the present administration for prioritising the education sector.

‎ In her remarks, Acting Executive Secretary of OGSTVEB, Mrs. Mojisola Adenowo, expressed appreciation to the Permanent Secretary for her strong charge and support towards the programme, commending the organisers and facilitators for their commitment to improve science education in the State.

Earlier, Director, Science and Technology, MOEST, Mrs. Edun Abosede, said the ongoing rehabilitation of laboratories in selected secondary schools and technical colleges in the State would significantly enhance practical learning and inspire more students to enroll in science-related subjects.

‎ She noted that the training was designed to equip educators with the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain laboratory safety standards, thereby ensuring a conducive learning environment for both learners and teachers, emphasising that sustained safety practices in laboratories would promote longevity of the facilities and foster a culture of responsibility among science educators.

‎ During the training, a Safeguard Specialist, OGSTEP, Mr. Oyekunle Oyewole, spoke extensively on laboratory safety, emphasising proper chemical storage to prevent hazards, hammering on the need for clearly marked emergency exit and evacuation signs, adequate ventilation for a safe working environment and the importance of having an easily accessible first aid box with a designated officer to ensure prompt response to emergencies and protect both students and teachers.

‎ Speaking on behalf of the participants, Head of Department, Sciences, Government Technical College, Aiyetoro, Mr. Aondoukau Daniel, expressed appreciation to the organisers, stating that the training was highly impactful and enlightening, as it provided practical insights that would strengthen laboratory management, promote safety consciousness and enhance the overall effectiveness of science instruction in their respective schools.

‎ The training featured practical sessions and expert-led discussions on laboratory safety, equipment handling and chemical management, reinforcing the state’s commitment to quality and safe science education in Ogun State.

OGSTVEB TO IMPLEMENT NEWLY APPROVED NTC AND NOS CURRICULUM THIS TERM-ADENOWO

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Technical and Vocational Education Board (OGSTVEB), Mrs. Mojisola Adenowo, has announced that the recently approved National Technical Certificate (NTC) curriculum and National Occupational Standards (NOS) for newly introduced trades will be implemented this term.

Mrs. Adenowo made this known while addressing staff during the New Year meeting organized by the Ministry, noting that the development was aimed at strengthening technical and vocational education across the State.

She added that, to ensure effective implementation of the curriculum, the Ogun State Skills Fund organised a standardisation meeting with OGSTVEB staff and instructors to harmonise teaching methods and ensure proper delivery of the new standards.

The Acting Executive Secretary disclosed that the Ministry has been assigned ambitious targets for the year, emphasising that achieving them would require collective commitment and teamwork from all officers.

While outlining the action plan for the year, including the Dual Technical Training (DTT) programme, industrial exposure for teachers, upskilling initiatives and the introduction of short-term courses such as FME IDEAS initiative, TVET initiative, certification and assessment of artisans.

She urged staff to be more proactive and productive in the discharge of their duties, while she charged heads of departments to promote effective teamwork across the agency.

Mrs. Adenowo expressed appreciation to all officers for their cooperation, dedication and peaceful coexistence over the past year, with special commendation to newly recruited staff. She further addressed the challenges facing various departments and assured that necessary measures would be put in place to address them.

ILISAN-REMO SKILLS CENTRE, GTC IJEBU-ODE HOLD 2024/25 GRADUATION

The Ogun State Technical and Vocational Education Board (OGSTVEB) has held the maiden graduation ceremony of its Skills Acquisition Centre in Ilisan-Remo, alongside the 2024/2025 graduation of Government Technical College (GTC), Ijebu-Ode, marking another milestone in the State’s revitalisation of technical and vocational education.

Speaking, during the maiden graduation ceremony, the Ag. Executive Secretary, OGSTVEB, Mrs Mojisola Adenowo, congratulated all graduands, describing them as young, skillful and talented ambassadors and the pride of the State.

‎ She expressed deep appreciation to the Ogun State Government for prioritising technical education and strengthening it through its partnership with the World Bank whose efforts had resuscitated and rehabilitated the technical and vocational education sector, pointing out that government has made significant investments in infrastructural development, retraining of teachers and the introduction of six new industry-relevant curricula, aimed at boosting employability and ensuring self-reliance among learners.

‎ Adenowo encouraged the graduands who planned to be self-employed but have not yet acquired their own workshop tools, to take advantage of the school’s facilities noting that graduates are permitted to use the fully equipped school workshops to carry out their vocational work, or rent the equipment upon presenting a guarantor, an initiative designed to support young artisans as they begin their entrepreneurial journey.

‎ She further disclosed that the recent visit of the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, to Singapore was to understudy advanced TVET models, with the objective of integrating global best practices into Ogun State’s technical education system, adding that the Federal Government has designated GTC Ijebu-Ode as a model and has awarded scholarships to 150 learners in recognition of its excellence.

She also announced that all laboratories and workshops in the institution would be fully equipped, imploring parents to encourage their children and wards to acquire skills, noting that skills, if well harnessed would translate into wealth, just as she revealed that certificates issued by Ogun State technical colleges are globally recognized and accepted.

‎ In his welcome address, the Principal of GTC Ijebu-Ode, Mr. Adegboyega Adejimi, expressed gratitude to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his unwavering commitment to revamping technical colleges across Ogun State, while he also appreciated the Commissioner for Education and the Permanent Secretary for ensuring that the colleges receive all necessary resources to excel. He however wished the graduands the very best as they move forward in their professional journey.

‎ Also speaking, the Centre Coordinator of OGSTVEB Skills Acquisition Centre, Ilisan-Remo, Mrs. Basirat Fadipe, commended the pioneer graduands, describing them as ambassadors of vocational education equipped with the competencies needed to combat unemployment and contribute meaningfully to the society.
