Building a Safer Ogun State: OGSTEP’s Bold Response to Gender-Based Violence
OGSTEP, in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, is leading a coordinated, survivor-centered response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across Ogun State — demonstrating that inclusive development must also mean protection for the most vulnerable.
Four Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) have been fully rehabilitated and activated in Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ilaro. These facilities now offer critical medical, psychosocial, and legal support services to survivors — all delivered with professionalism, privacy, and care. Backed by trained personnel and equipped with essential resources, these centres represent a major leap forward in access to justice and survivor support.
A statewide awareness campaign launched in May 2025 has reached over 2 million people through media, roadshows, and digital outreach — helping to shift public attitudes and amplify knowledge of GBV support systems. OGSTEP also convened a high-level Parliamentary Dialogue that secured commitments to adopt the VAPP Act, advance the FRILIA Bill, and support a new Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commission — all aimed at reinforcing Ogun State’s legal foundation for GBV prevention.
To strengthen frontline response, over 200 stakeholders — from police officers to health workers and journalists — have been trained on GBV Standard Operating Procedures. With 85% of participants showing improved capacity, OGSTEP is building not just structures, but systems of protection. The goal is clear: a safer, more inclusive Ogun State where survivors are heard, supported, and empowered.

Through our community sensitization effort on Gender Based Violence (GBV), we empowered people to unlearn harmful societal and gender-based norms.
We had walkthroughs and one-on-one conversations to enlighten people on what to report and how to report.
These efforts were carried out to remind people that GBV is not “private business” but a community issue.
