🌱 Building a Stronger African Seed Sector Through Collaboration

The future of Africa’s agriculture depends heavily on the strength of its seed systems — and building those systems requires collaboration across governments, regulators, breeders, researchers, development partners and the private sector.

At the Africa Food Systems Forum 2026 in Kigali, Rwanda, stakeholders from across the continent and the global seed community came together to discuss practical pathways for strengthening investment, innovation and resilience in Africa’s food and seed systems.

The AGRA Center of Excellence for Seed Systems in Africa (CESSA) side event, themed “Investing in Seed Systems for Resilience, Nutrition and Jobs,” provided an important platform for discussing Seed Sector Investment Plans, national planning, public and private investment, strategic partnerships and stronger seed systems.

The presence of Hon. Roza Fatch Mbilizi, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development of Malawi, and Dr. Yacouba Diallo, Secretary General of the African Seed Trade Association (AfSTA), among other leaders and experts, reflected the growing importance of collective action in transforming Africa’s seed sector.

For the Nigeria Plant Variety Protection Office (NPVPO), these conversations reinforce an important message:

👉🏾 Investment in agriculture must also mean investment in innovation and the systems that protect that innovation.

A strong plant variety protection system can encourage breeders to develop improved varieties, attract investment in agricultural innovation and contribute to a more competitive and resilient seed sector.

NPVPO is proud to contribute to the broader conversation on how Africa can build seed systems that support innovation, food security, climate resilience and sustainable agricultural development.

We appreciate AGRA/ CESSA for creating this platform for knowledge and experience sharing across countries and for bringing together the people and institutions shaping the future of Africa’s food systems.

🌍🌱 Protecting innovation. Strengthening seed systems. Transforming agriculture.
