The Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, has said that Nigeria is only collecting 30 per cent of the taxes it should be collecting, leaving a wide gap of 70 per cent. G2C The Imperative Of Government Improving Revenue And Roles Of Stakeholders
Topic: The Imperative Of Government Improving Revenue And Roles Of Stakeholders Time: Dec 6, 2024 10:00 AM Africa/Lagos

Every Nation of the world, finds development in knowing their own people, defining their own environment, enacting laws for their own people to live by and building an environment suitable for their own people.
That is real democracy! A government with the involvement of the people.
A Nigeria that is customized for Nigerians!
Who we are is defined by our own Citizens. How we run our organizations must be in consultation and continuous deliberations with the Citizens and relevant Stakeholders, because, no one knows it all.
Our government must embrace the open minds of the people and collaborate to build the Nation, together.
This is the reason for our gathering today. The Federal Inland Revenue Service under Dr. Zacch Adedeji, gathers together with the Tax Stakeholders to deliberate on THE IMPERATIVES OF IMPROVING GOVERNMENT REVENUE AND THE ROLE OF STAKEHOLDERS.
Today, we open up conversations on FIRS tax policies, collection and distribution of taxes, and the utilization of receivables.
Our aim at G2C Interface is to bridge the gap between Government and her agencies on one side, and the Nigerian Citizens on the other side.
If there is one thing I gained in office as the immediate past Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political Matters, it is that government is perceived to be distant from the Citizens, and they wonder if the government “will attend to the things that concern us”. This MUST be attended to!
That vacuum must be covered. The need to bridge that gap between government and her people is imperative. This is the G2C Interface.
We believe that, by the end of today’s gathering, Nigerian tax payers would have found more reasons, not just to continue to pay taxes, but would also support the FIRS to expand the tax net and boost National revenue.
Our present democracy and life, bit by bit, must be reviewed on the table of our diversity and redefined as the strength of our Nation. Then, a New Great Nigeria unfolds.
I await the day that Nigeria would be rechristened A NEW GREAT NIGERIA.
I welcome you all to today’s gathering. Let the deliberations begin.
God bless our Nation, Nigeria.

What's the real problem of Nigeria?
During one of my G2C Interface programmes, meeting with a bunch of University of Abuja Students, I asked them a question that answers the above question.
"If you are privileged to hold certain resources that actually belongs to the Nation, but it comes to you and you are the one to determine if you will give it to the government or hold it to yourself, what would you do?"
Let me give you an example?
Somehow, you have the privilege of acquiring Nigeria's crude oil, on credit, to the tune of $10B, which you have just sold to some Company abroad.
The money comes directly to your Bank account. You are the one to decide if you will imburse the government, since the money is not yours.
What would you do?
Discovery of the experiment?
80% will abscond with the fund.
15% will renegotiate how it is shared, with a major chunk going to individual pockets.
5% will be honourable to relinquish the fund that wasn't theirs in the first place.
Let me ask you also, as my commentators, what would you do as a Nigerian?
I would love you to prove me wrong.
The above question answers to patriotism, corruption and what the true problems of Nigeria are!
Consider that PTA Chairman who approves millions to his friends without due process. (Real story.)
Consider that Public office holder who wants a bribe before a foreign Hospital is built in Nigeria or taken out to Ghana because of corruption. (Real story.)
Consider that Lecturer who wants the cookies of his daughters age mate before she can pass his exams. (Real story)
Consider the Plantain Farmer who increases his product price by 600% because fuel price has increased. (Real story)
Consider that Hospital where you need to find N1m as deposit before your dying friend is saved. (Real story)
Consider that Scammer who introduced you to multimillion investments, only to disappear with people's money in billions. (Real story)
Consider the monies that your Community Chairman can not account for because of impunity and fraudulent lifestyle. (Real story)
In all these, I haven't mentioned ghosts, but people whonlive among us, who are Nigerians, whom we in our homes and communities can easily query. We can easily query the source of their wealth (misused word).
The Nigeria we wanna see, must begin from each our our corners. Start from your corner!
Create a mini Nigeria in your home and immediate Community.
Again, may Nigeria succeed.
Dr. Bode 'Gbore writes from Abuja today the 30th of July, 2024 at 1000hours.
