CHRISTMAS BROUHAHA!
The birth of Jesus Christ of Nazareth was celebrated yesterday, 25th December, 2019 in Nigeria and the world over. It is usually celebrated with so much fanfare yearly, the reason is not far fetched, Jesus was and is the saviour of the world, he is God in human flesh, he came to save man from eternal damnation, for these reasons, he was persecuted and tortured, he died for mankind, he eventualy ressurected, alas! He saved the world. Little wonder, his birthday is celebrated d world over.
We re not unmindful of the fact that the identity of Jesus Christ of Nazareth that some of us prefer to rightly refer to as Jesus Christ, as well as his status and personality, some of which were alluded to in d first paragraph herein is controverted by some religions, i.e Islam, Buddhism, Atheism Judaism e.t.c However, all the religions listed above and others seem to agree that Jesus Christ existed, though Christianity believes in his everlasting existence. The fact that he existed certainly implies that he was born, as such, his birthday deserves to be celebrated for one reason or the other. What is no doubt controversial is d date he was born, was it on 25th December?
Despite the fact that the birth of Jesus Christ is most celebrated by christians, they call it Christmas (the mass of Christ) some christians in Nigeria, churches and particularly, denominations in the body of Christ do not believe in Christmas, as such, their congregations do not celebrate it, some of those churches include, but not limited to Mountain of Fire Miracle Ministry, Depper Christian Life Ministry, Jehovah's Witness etc. Their main reason is that Jesus Christ was not born on 25th December, as such, Christmas is a misnormal. Infact, Dr. Daniel Olukoya of MFM who appears to be the loudest in this school of thought has copiously described Christmas as 'idolatory', he and others who share his belief argue that 25th December was originally set aside by the ancient Romans for Mars festival by the worshipers of sun 🌞, so, whilst they argued yesterday, the rest of us celebrated the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Mike Bamiloye, made my day yesterday, he staired the hornet's nest, you remember him? That talented, calm, ever smiling yet assertive evangelist, the founder of Mount Zion Drama Ministry. What did he do? He asked a million dollar question via his Instagram page, he asked, WHY THIS POINTLESS ARGUMENT? why argue whether or not Christ was born on 25th December, whether or not Christmas is 'idolatory'. His comments tore the internet and stired conversation around the topic. He opined that it is immaterial whether or not Christ was born on 25th December, what is important, according to him, is that Christ was born and a date was set aside for d celebration of his birth. He asked, when was father born? yet, we celebrate Father's day, the same applicable to mother, children etc. Evangelist Bamiloye celebrated Christmas yesterday by sharing knowledge, and maybe, by 'resetting some brains'.
25th December was originally set aside for idol worship, the date was adopted as the celebration of the birth of Christ, the worshipers of Mars/sun and the christians celebrated side by side probably without hurling abuses at each other, without intolerance, without blood shed and without needless rhetorics, imagine that in today's Nigeria, your guess is as good as mine. Gradually, the celebration of the birth of Christ overshadowed the celebration of sun on 25th December, little or nothing is heard of that celebration today, it has been confined to history. Why should anyone still raise objection to the celebration of the birth of Jesus on 25th December? Why should anyone, by his teachings, deny millions of people in his congregation the celebration of Christmas, simply because the date coincided with the celebration of idol? Those of us who celebrate Christmas do not celebrate sun, we celebrate Christ. Anyways, most members of their congregations listen to their oppositions to christmas and still return to dine and wine with us in commemoration of the birth of Christ, they live amongst us, they are our brothers and sisters, we know it.
President Olusegun Obasanjo (Ebora Owu) said on record that he doesn't know his exact birth date, births were not mostly recorded at the time of his birth, thus, he adopted a date as his birth date and he celebrates it as his birthday till today. I just cant imagine one of his sons saying, I will not celebrate dad's birthday because that date is not his original date of birth or because dad's adopted date coinsides with the date of Ogun worship, his brain would be reset.
It is time to move away from meaningless sentiments and be realistic. Jesus was born, he traversed the earth doing wonders, he saved mankind, he accomplished his golden mission without blemish, he lives and reigns on, his birthday deserves to be celebrated, 25th December is his universally adopted birthday. Stop the unprofitable oppositions and join us in accessing the numerous blessings that come with the celebration of JESUS CHRIST's birth.
