NICO Boss Visits Soun of Ogbomosho, Takes Over NACUS Campus

In a relentless effort to revolutionize cultural education in Nigeria, the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), has taken custody of the building donated by His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege II to serve as South-West campus of the Nigerian Academy for Cultural Studies (NACUS).

At the visit to the palace of the Soun of Ogbomosho Land on Monday in Oyo State, Executive Secretary/CEO of NICO, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye says the establishment of a specialized monotechnic remains crucial to address the considerable setback Nigerian culture has faced over the last 200 years due to lack of respect.

He maintains that with the Academy’s curriculum approved by the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE), programmes leading to the award of National Diploma in Cultural Administration and Resource Management and Postgraduate Diploma in Cultural Administration will soon Commence at the Oshogbo Campus.

He also reveals that the Academy will correct historical narratives and revive interest in our core cultural practices, ethics and values aimed at training and reorienting Nigerians on the need to always appreciate their rich cultural heritage.

Otunba Biodun Ajiboye discloses that the new academy will have unique departments like Cultural Pharmacology, which will focus on transforming Nigeria's natural resources into medicinal use while the Cultural Technology department aims at training students on the various ways to convert natural resources into technological products, using the Chinese experience as example.

On his part, the Soun of Ogbomosho, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege III, expresses immense excitement and gratitude to the Federal Government for establishing the Academy in Ogbomosho. He donates 10 acres of land for future development and expansion of the Academy.

"We're excited and grateful for having this in our town and we'll be giving you all the necessary support to ensure the project succeeds".

Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege III says he is commited to any course, aimed at reviving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage while resolving confusions surrounding historical facts and traditions, which he lamented are often poorly documented.

He cited the confusion surrounding the origins and descendants of historical figures like the old Jewel, where varying accounts are circulating and therefore charged the Institute to research into our historical facts to be properly documented as source material.

The Ogbomosho Campus of NACUS is a fenced building with facilities including spacious lecture halls, large auditorium, male and female hostels and good road network to mention a few.

Revamping of Cultural Values: The Only Lasting Solution to Nigeria’s Problems

A nation without wholesome appreciation of its culture is a nation that cannot grow and innovate. This is why Nigeria is faced with a myriad of challenges ranging from moral decadence, banditry, kidnapping, corruption and economic instability.

In view of the above, the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy has embarked on a nationwide seminar to advocate for the return of cultural values in Nigeria as a panacea for nation building.

To achieve this, the Institute has assembled experts to explore strategies that will promote unity, patriotism and value reorientation by creating awareness on the need to effectively manage our cultural diversity for sustainable development in the country.

Executive Secretary/CEO of NICO, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye says the nationwide advocacy for the return of cultural values is targeted at bringing cultural orientation to the fore as a major platform for promoting ethical practices, preserving cultural values and enhancing diversity management in Nigeria.

He is of the opinion that if Nigerians can be intentional about revisiting our cultural values, the ethical practices that form our way of life will not only reduce crime in the country but significantly contribute to national behaviour.

He maintains that with over 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria, the strength in our diversity equally presents challenges which makes the management of our cultural diversity very crucial in our quest to develop as a nation.

“Imagine a situation where Nigerians come to a point where ethics and values are held in high esteem and our cultural diversity is used to the advantage of all and for the progress of the country, it will go a long way to strengthen the moral and cultural foundations of our dear nation”.

“A nation without concerted efforts at moderating or determining expected behaviour of its citizens is a nation in chaos. We should be worried that before now, our cultural values, ethical values and patriotism were very high but for some reasons, the society has degenerated to a state where people now take laws into their hands because of our loss of focus on our cultural values and the inability to allow cultural values to shape and develop our younger people”.

He insists that for Nigeria to have peace and develop as a nation, there is need to bring back the right cultural values to instill in our younger ones and learn to curtail our excesses as a people.

The NICO annual seminar series on Ethics, Values and Management of Cultural Diversity in Nigeria is expected to hold in the six (6) geo-political zones with the first edition held in Abuja, the North-Central Zone on September 11, while the second edition for the South-West Zone is expected to hold on September, 24, 2025 in Akure, Ondo State.

Prof. Wole Soyinka: You Had Transcended the Bar of a Legend, You Are a Deity, Says Ajiboye

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has been venerated by the Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye as symbolic deity and not just a mere legend.

Speaking at an event organized by Oduduwa Heritage Home in collaboration with Parliamentarian Gabriel Magno at the Legislative Chamber of the Federal District in Brazil, tagged “Brazil-Nigeria: Heritage, Dialogue and Future”, Otunba Ajiboye who is also the Secretary, World Orisha Congress (WOOCON), said Professor Wole Soyinka’s elevation to the status of a deity comes from his numerous contribution to humanity.

According to him, Soyinka, who is globally celebrated for his towering contributions to drama, poetry, and intellectual thought should not be referred to merely as a legend but as a timeless figure whose voice transcends generations, embodying both the conscience and creative spirit of Africa.

His words “When I was ten years old, my father told me a story. He said there was a man who spoke English so well that even if he spoke to a tree, the tree would obey him. That man was Wole Soyinka. From that moment, I promised my father that I would go to school and one day become a friend to that legend called Professor Wole Soyinka”.

“Twenty years ago, I was on a programme called the Nigeria Telecom Awards, and through that journey, I became friends with some of his children. I looked for him, and our relationship had blossomed from then”.

“I am an Orisa devotee. I was born into Orisa. My grandmother was an Orisa worshipper, and my grandfather was a Babalawo. I have no regrets about this heritage, and I stand proudly before the world to declare that I am an Orisa person”.

“A nation without a cultural identity is a nation without a future. A man without a cultural identity is like one hanging in the sky — his head not touching the heavens, and his feet not touching the earth. Sadly, that is the reality of many of my brothers and sisters here today”.

The World Orisha Congress (WOOCON) aims to gather over 5 million Orisha devotees around the world in Nigeria for a spiritual convergence with a view to reconnect with their ancestral roots.

Professor Wole Soyinka is currently a Patron to World Orisha Congress (WOOCON) alongside Professor Wande Abimbola with the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi as Chairman and Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade as Co-Chairman. Otunba Francis Meshioye is the Vice Chairman while Oba Jacob Olobaleshin Oyetunji, the Ataoja of Oshogbo is the Deputy Chairman.

NICO Boss, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye Host KWAYORG
••• Pledges More Support for Youth Constituency

The Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, has reaffirmed his commitment to creating opportunities for young people.

He made this pledge when he hosted the leadership of the Kwara South Youth Development Organization (KWAYORG) on Tuesday.

Speaking during the gathering, Prince Abolarin Alaba Dansharafa, the President of KWAYORG who led the delegation, stated that the visit was to physically express gratitude to the NICO boss and commend his efforts in strategically and convincingly repositioning NICO for global recognition.

Dansharafa commended Otunba Ajiboye as a great ambassador for Kwara South and the state at large, citing his numerous achievements in the cultural parastatal and his dedication to youth development.

"We are impressed with what you are doing in your agency. Your achievements have given us no option but to associate with you," he said.

As the apex body for all Kwara South youths and indigenous organizations in the senatorial district, Dansharafa added that it is their responsibility to ensure the success of Kwara South representatives who are public officers and who have demonstrated capacity in their respective offices.

He also admonished the cultural icon not to be deterred by negative comments, stating that the youth need people like him now more than ever in the zone.

In his remarks, Comrade Ibiwoye Olaniyi Moses Aniyikaye, who is also the President of the Irepodun Youths Council, acknowledged Otunba Biodun Ajiboye's positive impact, particularly regarding youth engagement, which he noted that has earned the NICO boss more respect and acceptability among young people.

"We sincerely appreciate your efforts in creating opportunities for our people. We are confident in you and certain that you will keep doing more," Aniyikaye said.

He added that youths in Irepodun and its environs would continue to work closely with the NICO boss to promote greater inclusiveness.

Responding, Otunba Ajiboye thanked the group for their uncommon support, especially when it mattered most.

He commended KWAYORG for distinguishing itself by showing that young people can make their voices heard without resorting to slandering or blackmailing for attention.

"I must be sincere, I appreciate you all that you stood up and made your voice audible when it mattered most. It is worrisome when young people resort to cheap blackmail just to get their way. We can achieve many things together by working collaboratively for a collective success that will give a direct benefit to our people without having to soil each other's names”, he said.

Reflecting on his political journey, Ajiboye noted that his achievements were a result of continuous hard work and consistency. "I have seen life; I have witnessed life from a point where I had to cross a lot of obstacles to reach where I was going. And I had no option but to do what was expected of me diligently to achieve my goals because turning back then wasn't an option”.

He expressed hope that young people of today would possess a similar zeal and dedication to succeed without resorting to tarnishing others' images.

Ajiboye therefore charged the group to keep prioritizing their goals without compromise and to key into promoting President Bola Tinubu's "Renewed Hope" agenda, which he said has birthed unprecedented opportunities for Nigerians, with an impressive percentage for the youth.

He also hinted on a Kwara South Political Summit, which he said would be aimed at harmonising and bringing Kwara Southerners together politically, noting that through the summit, the region can make bold statements and put its interests across to the generality of the political landscape in the state.

Other members of the delegation included Saeed Tijjani, the pioneer Director of New Media for KWAYORG; Aishat Musa, a member; and Temitope Abifarin Sanusi, KWAYORG member and Treasurer of the Irepodun Youths Council.
