PRESS STATEMENT
MAY 30, 2026
NO AMOUNT OF PRESS STATEMENTS CAN REWRITE COURT RECORDS OR SUPPRESS THE TRUTH
We have carefully read the statement issued by Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed regarding the alleged affirmation of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Unfortunately, rather than providing clarity, the statement has further exposed the deep contradictions surrounding the current leadership crisis within the party.
First, it is important to remind Nigerians that leadership disputes within the PDP remain the subject of intense legal and political controversy. Various court decisions, appeals, and competing interpretations have emerged over the last several months, resulting in multiple claims of legitimacy from rival blocs within the party.
The most disturbing aspect of the statement is the claim that the PDP has already concluded all its primary elections, including the presidential primary election. Nigerians deserve a direct answer: when exactly was this presidential primary conducted? Under whose authority was it organized? Which delegates participated? Where are the official records? Where are the notifications issued to INEC? These are simple questions that deserve simple answers.
The statement also attempts to create the impression that every issue concerning the PDP leadership has already been settled. That is not an accurate reflection of the political realities within the party. Even after recent court decisions, different factions continue to advance conflicting interpretations of the judgments, while stakeholders across the country remain divided over the future direction of the party.
Furthermore, it is a matter of public record that litigation surrounding the status of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, disciplinary proceedings within the party, and questions regarding party leadership have generated multiple judgments and enforcement actions. Reports show that an FCT High Court dismissed a suit challenging disciplinary actions and subsequent enforcement efforts were pursued based on that judgment.
Equally important is the fact that the Supreme Court has repeatedly emphasized that courts should be cautious about interfering in the internal affairs of political parties except where constitutional procedures and due process are violated. This principle has featured prominently in several PDP-related disputes.
It is therefore misleading for anyone to present ongoing political disagreements as though they no longer exist. The truth is that serious constitutional, organizational, and leadership questions remain subjects of public debate within the PDP, and no amount of media spin can eliminate those realities.
The attempt to drag former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan into internal factional battles is equally unfortunate. Dr. Jonathan remains one of the most respected leaders produced by the PDP and should not be used as a tool in internal power struggles. His name should unite party members rather than become another source of division.
Most importantly, the future of the PDP cannot be determined by press statements, threats, propaganda, or competing media narratives. The future of the party will be determined by its constitution, its lawful organs, democratic processes, and the collective will of its members across the country.
We therefore call on all party stakeholders to abandon misinformation, embrace transparency, respect constitutional processes, and focus on rebuilding a credible opposition capable of inspiring confidence among Nigerians.
History has shown repeatedly that no individual is bigger than the PDP, and no faction can permanently impose its will against the collective interests of party members.
Signed:
