The Director General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, represented the Agency at the stakeholder meeting on Nigeria’s Halal Economy Strategy aimed at strengthening the country’s position in the global halal market valued at over $7 trillion.
The meeting, chaired by the Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Doris Anite-Uzoka, reviewed ongoing reforms to establish a National Halal Authority framework, strengthen compliance with international standards, and enhance certification and traceability systems to improve Nigeria’s global trade competitiveness.
The engagement aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen NBRDA’s involvement in the halal ecosystem and related bio-based industrial value chains.

Nigeria’s genomics and precision medicine ecosystem continues to expand as leading scientists, innovators, researchers, and emerging biotech talents prepare to converge at the Genomac Conference and Hackathon Finals 2026 in Lagos.
The event, themed “Precision Genomics for Early and Accurate Diagnosis,” will explore discussions around genomic innovation, healthcare transformation, bioinformatics, and Africa’s growing role in precision medicine.
As part of the conference, the Director General of the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, will feature as the Special Guest at a session titled “Building Genomic Capacity in Resource-Limited Settings: What it takes to move from awareness to implementation in Nigeria.”
The session is expected to provide insights into strengthening national genomic infrastructure, expanding research collaboration, and translating biotechnology innovation into improved healthcare outcomes for Nigerians.
The conference will bring together researchers, innovators, clinicians, policymakers, students, and industry stakeholders to advance conversations around genomic science, healthcare innovation, and the future of precision medicine in Nigeria and Africa.

NBRDA, JIGO Farms Partner to Boost Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture in Nigeria
The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with JIGO Farms and Confectionaries Limited to advance sustainable agriculture, food security and biotechnology applications in Nigeria.
The agreement will promote collaboration in aquaculture, livestock and poultry development, fish breeding, aquaponics, livestock genetics, feed formulation, pasture development and tissue culture propagation of crops such as banana and plantain.
The partnership is also expected to support research commercialisation, strengthen private sector participation, increase agricultural productivity and create opportunities for job creation and skills development across the agricultural value chain.
The initiative aligns with NBRDA’s mandate to promote biotechnology research and deploy innovative solutions for national socio-economic development.

NBRDA Announces Genomics Initiative to Strengthen Healthcare, Create Jobs
The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) says ongoing investments in genomics and bioinformatics will strengthen healthcare innovation, scientific research, digital transformation, and economic growth in Nigeria.
This was disclosed on Tuesday during a press briefing following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) and Indygeneus Bio Incorporated, an American BioFinTech and AI-driven biotechnology company.
The Director General of NBRDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, said the collaboration would enhance Nigeria’s capacity in genomic data generation, analytics, and bioinformatics through the National Genomics and Bioinformatics Data Generation, Repository and Management Infrastructure (NGBR).
He emphasised that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the areas of economic diversification, digital innovation, healthcare transformation, youth empowerment, and sustainable national development.
The NBRDA boss explained that the partnership forms part of efforts to build a biotechnology ecosystem that supports healthcare innovation, economic diversification, youth empowerment, and national competitiveness in the emerging global bioeconomy.
He further noted that the programme would create opportunities for Nigerian science graduates in genomics, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology entrepreneurship.
Earlier at the MoU signing, the Founder/CEO of Indygenous Bio Incorporated, Yusuf Henriques, said global interest in genomics continues to grow because of its potential to drive innovation and economic growth across multiple sectors.
He expressed confidence that the collaboration will contribute to scientific advancement, healthcare development and sustainable national growth.
