One year ago, on May 29th, 2023, Kano welcomed a new leader. His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf was sworn in as Governor of Kano State. The swearing-in ceremony attracted such a large crowd that the parade had to be postponed until later in the day.
Over the past year, the state has seen significant successes and achievements across various sectors. There have been reforms in government policies, improvements in infrastructure, education, health, and human capital development. Despite facing challenges from court cases, the administration has made remarkable progress compared to other states.
Looking ahead, I foresee a complete transformation of Kano State in the next three years. Development will continue to spread throughout the state, with ongoing efforts to address the water supply issue. His Excellency plans to declare a state of emergency in the education sector, leading to extensive renovations of schools at all levels. In the health sector, significant progress has already been made, including the reacquisition of Hasiya Bayero Hospital, the renovation of Bela Hospital and Sir Sunusi Hospital, and ongoing upgrades to primary health care facilities. Ambulances have been distributed across all 44 local government areas for better patient transport. The revival of the State Drugs Management Agency has made medicines more affordable in public hospitals compared to private pharmacies.
In infrastructure, the completion of 5km roads in all 44 local government areas is underway, along with the construction of two mega flyovers and new roads. A major project is the installation of solar street lights to replace generator-powered ones, which will reduce governance costs.
Civil service reforms have led to the prompt payment of salaries and pensions, the payment of gratuities, and the cessation of salary cuts, all contributing to the administration's successes.
Human capital development has also seen considerable progress, with initiatives like the monthly empowerment of 100 women from each of the 44 local government areas, benefiting 4,400 women with 50,000 naira each month, and the revival of 20 skill acquisition centers.
The next three years promise to be transformative for Kano State. Congratulations to His Excellency and the people of Kano on these achievements.
