As the world marks the 2026 World Bee Day with the theme, ‘Bee Together for People and the Planet – A Partnership that Sustains Us All,’ experts are drawing attention to the growing threats facing pollinators and the implications for food security, biodiversity and sustainable agriculture.
Bees and other pollinators remain critical to global food production, with the United Nations estimating that more than 75 per cent of the world’s food crops depend partly on pollination.

NADF, JICA Explore New Funding Model for Nigerian Agriculture

The National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) has begun discussions with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on a proposed Agricultural Finance Two-Step Loan Project aimed at improving access to funding for farmers and agribusinesses in Nigeria.

The meeting, held at the NADF headquarters in Abuja, brought together officials of both organisations to explore possible areas of collaboration. The NADF team was led by the General Manager, Partnerships and Investor Relations, Mr Nasir Ingawa, while the JICA delegation was headed by Mr Hideaki Hiruta, Team Leader for Two-Step Loan Planning.

During the discussions, NADF officials explained the Fund’s lending and blended finance models, which are designed to reduce risks for commercial banks and improve credit access for players in the agricultural value chain. The JICA team also outlined the framework for the proposed facility, expected to provide medium and long-term financing to agricultural producers through participating financial institutions.

The preparatory survey for the project is expected to run until July 2026 and will help shape the final structure of the programme. Priority crops identified under the initiative include rice, maize, cassava, millet, sesame and oil palm.

The Executive Secretary of National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF), Mohammed Ibrahim, has called for stronger collaboration between government, industry and academic institutions to reposition Nigeria’s agricultural colleges and research institutes for food security and job creation.

The call was made during the National Legislative Summit and Expo on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Ibadan. The summit, chaired by Senator Sharafadeen Alli, with Deputy Senate Leader Senator Oyelola Ashiru among the keynote speakers, focused on the theme: “Unfolding the Potential of Agricultural Colleges and Institutions through Collaboration and Innovation to Enhance Food Security and Job Creation.”

Presenting the NADF position paper on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Dr Yusuf Jatto, Deputy General Manager, Budget, said the country’s agricultural institutions still hold enormous potential despite years of poor funding, obsolete equipment and weak extension services. He disclosed that the Fund carried out a baseline survey and needs assessment of agricultural research institutes and federal colleges of agriculture in 2025 to identify priority areas for intervention. He said the Fund has already commenced processes to execute projects covering renewable energy, digital infrastructure, mechanisation, laboratories and capacity development.

The Fund also proposed what it described as the “Agri-Transform Model,” built around structured collaboration and innovation. Among the recommendations presented were mandatory practical training for students, establishment of innovation hubs and technology transfer offices, as well as stronger partnerships between colleges and agribusiness firms. NADF said with proper support, agricultural institutions could help raise food production, create thousands of jobs and drive Nigeria closer to food sovereignty.

The National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) and NIRSAL Plc are expanding collaboration on agricultural mechanisation and financing following a meeting held in Abuja.

The engagement builds on earlier discussions between the two organisations on agricultural financing and primary production support.

Speaking during the meeting, NADF Executive Secretary/CEO, Mohammed A. Ibrahim, said closer cooperation between institutions had become necessary to support ongoing efforts to improve agricultural productivity and strengthen the value chain. “The current realities within Nigeria’s agricultural sector demand stronger institutional collaboration capable of maximising limited resources and delivering sustainable impact across the agricultural value chain,” he said.

NIRSAL Plc Executive Director, Operations, Ewaen Imohe, said financing remains critical to improving mechanisation and productivity in the sector. “Accessible and affordable financing remains a critical pillar for improving mechanisation and agricultural productivity,” he said.

The meeting also examined opportunities in irrigation-supported farming, concessional financing, and technology-based monitoring systems, while technical teams agreed to continue engagements on workable partnership models aimed at boosting food security and agricultural output nationwide.
