NEMA Assesses Windstorm Damage in Nine Communities of Kebbi State
Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have conducted an on-the-spot assessment of communities affected by a devastating windstorm in Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The assessment exercise followed a severe windstorm incident that occurred on 30th May, 2026, affecting nine communities across the local government area. The affected communities include Gidan Agoda, Fadisonku, Saharma, Tunga Mai Ruwa, Yalema, Tiggi, Gadawande, Lugga, and Gidan Mai Gatari.
The NEMA assessment team visited the affected communities to evaluate the extent and magnitude of the destruction with a view to providing accurate information that would guide possible humanitarian intervention and support for the affected persons.
Findings from the assessment revealed that the windstorm caused extensive damage to residential buildings and critical public infrastructure, including hospitals, mosques, and schools. Several houses had their rooftops blown off, walls collapsed, and structures severely damaged, leaving many residents exposed to harsh weather conditions and disrupting essential social services within the communities.
The team also observed that while some affected residents had commenced partial repairs on their damaged homes using available local resources, many others were still struggling to cope with the impact of the disaster due to limited financial means and continued to live in partially damaged structures.
During interactions with community leaders and affected residents, NEMA officials sympathized with the victims and assured them that the findings from the assessment would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities to facilitate necessary humanitarian response and support measures.
The Agency further reiterated the importance of adopting disaster risk reduction measures, particularly during the rainy season when severe weather-related incidents are more likely to occur. Residents were encouraged to plant trees and promote environmental protection measures aimed at reducing the impact and recurrence of windstorm disasters in the affected areas.
