Successive Nigeria Governments have harped on the need to tap the enormous revenue-yielding potentials in the nation’s natural gas reserves and the unique opportunities it presents in terms of diversifying the economy, providing alternative income to crude oil, creating employment, promoting local consumption and eliminating gas flare. Yet, the challenge has persisted over the years. Today, Nigeria is one the few countries grossly under-utilizing and wasting her gas resources. The Senate Committee on Gas Resources since 1999 has systematically launched a campaign to attain zero flare and maximize local consumption of industrial and cooking gas. The Committee, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, NNPC & DPR, successfully organized the first Nigerian Summit on deepening utilization of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in 2009. The summit noted among others that lack of infrastructure for effective production, supply, transportation and distribution of LP Gas in Nigeria is responsible for under-utilization. The summit also recommended that Government in partnership with the Private Sector should provide all the necessary infrastructure to this end. The January 2014 National Conference/Exhibition on Gas Resources is being convened to review, appraise and consolidate efforts so far made in this sector and proactively step up performance with a view to ultimately deepening domestic utilization of Natural Gas and routine flare elimination within the shortest time.
