The Renewable Energy Programme was initiated by the Federal Ministry of Environment in fulfilment of the Federal republic of Nigeria’s obligation to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCC) and as a part of African Strategy on voluntary emission reduction. Renewable Energy Programme hopes to address the nation’s challenges of moving towards clean, reliable, secure and competitive energy and also to ensure that the renewable energy sector develops sustainably and profitably.

The Abu Dhabi Ascent 4 and 5 May, 2014
Abu Dhabi Ascent 4 and 5 May, 2014
The United Nations Secretary-General and the United Arab Emirates is hosting the Abu Dhabi Ascent, a high level meeting on 4 and 5 May 2014 in Abu Dhabi in support of the Secretary-General’s Climate Summit in September 2014.
The objective of the Abu Dhabi Ascent is to provide an opportunity for all Governments to be fully informed about the Climate Summit, including how they can bring bold announcements and actions to the Summit, as requested by the Secretary-General. The Ascent will be the only meeting before the Summit in which Governments, the private sector and civil society will come together to explore international and multi-stakeholder efforts that have high potential for catalysing ambitious action on the ground. The Secretary-General set two objectives for the Summit: to catalyse ambitious action on the ground to reduce emissions and strengthen climate resilience, and to mobilize political momentum for an ambitious, global, legal agreement in 2015.
Governments came to Abu Dhabi prepared to consider their country’s overall package to be delivered at the Summit. In Abu Dhabi, Ministers had the opportunity to explore Climate Actions in several high-impact areas as identified by UNEP’s Emissions Gap Report of 2013.
Energy Efficiency Forests Climate Finance
Renewable Energy Agriculture Transportation
Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Adaptation, Resilience and DRR Cities
Former President John Kufor of Ghana and Engr.(Mrs) Bahijjahtu Abubakar
The Ascent includes a plenary session with the Secretary-General and high-level speakers, presentations on the Climate Actions, and break-out sessions. The Abu Dhabi Ascent also included high-level private sector and civil society participants.
Both the Ascent and the Climate Summit are separate from, but complementary to, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiating process. Announcements of any significant national action or contribution will be welcome at the Summit. Neither the Summit nor the Abu Dhabi Ascent is a UNFCCC meeting.
Leaders had the opportunity to announce Climate Actions at the Summit, thereby showcasing feasible and affordable climate solutions and strengthening political will for an ambitious, global, legal agreement in Paris in 2015.
