Defending truth, strengthening media integrity, and protecting press freedom is a democratic responsibility shared by all of us – not only journalists. This was the core message from the World Press Freedom Day event recently hosted by the Nordic embassies in Abuja – Denmark🇩🇰, Finland🇫🇮, Norway🇳🇴, and Sweden🇸🇪.

The conversations were honest, insightful, and deeply timely – from the role of journalists in times of conflict to the weaponisation of information, the impact of AI, the urgency of media literacy, and the future of democratic trust. Confronting mis/disinformation is never easy, yet the quality of engagement from journalists, policymakers, civil society, and partners showed how committed our shared community is to safeguarding the information space.

For the Nordics in Nigeria, the event was also an important moment to reaffirm our collective commitment to press freedom, media integrity, and the protection of journalists. Because in the end, democracy only thrives when press freedom is protected – and when truth, transparency, and accountability are allowed to flourish.

Marking an important moment for Benin 🇧🇯

Ambassador Sanna Selin represented Finland at the inauguration ceremony of the new President of Benin, H.E. Romuald Wadagni, in Cotonou on Sunday, 24 May 2026.

During the visit, Ambassador Selin also visited Villa Karo, the Finnish Institute for West Africa, which plays an important role in strengthening cultural exchange and people-to-people connections between Finland and the region. Today, the Nordic embassies in Abuja mark World Press Freedom Day.

Observed every 3 May, the day is a global reminder that facts matter — and so do the people who work every day to protect them. This year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” reflects a shared Nordic position: free, independent, and trusted media is essential to democratic societies.

As the lines between journalism, technology, civic space, and human rights continue to blur, the role of journalists becomes even more critical. Those who, often at personal risk, cut through noise, verify information, and challenge falsehoods help safeguard truth, accountability, and public trust.

Later this month, the Nordic embassies in Abuja will host a dialogue aimed at appreciating the work of journalists in an era of mis- and disinformation, and the importance of upholding media integrity.

May Day, known as Vappu in Finland, is the ultimate celebration of spring — and one of the most joyful days of the year! Kicking off on April 30 and rolling into May 1, Vappu brings together students, workers, families, and friends for parades, picnics, music, and pure springtime energy. 🥰🌼🌸

From colorful student overalls and graduation caps to parks filled with laughter and bubbles, Finland truly comes alive. And of course, no Vappu is complete without munkki, sima, and tippaleipä 🍩🍋

It’s all about fun, good vibes, and welcoming spring the Finnish way! 💙🥂

Have a lovely May Day!🥳✨
Happy Vappu! 🎈🎉
