Fire Safety Is National Security – Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo
The Honourable Minister of Interior (MOI), Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has stated that fire safety is a critical component of national security, stressing that the protection of lives, homes, industries, and public institutions is essential to safeguarding productivity and national growth.
The Minister made this statement at the Passing-Out Parade of 700 cadets of the Federal Fire Service, where he was ably represented by the Secretary to the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), Major General Abdulmalik Jibrin (Rtd.). The event was held at the NDLEA Academy, opposite Lamingo Dam, Kanton-Rikkos, Jos, Plateau State, on Thursday, 5th February 2026.
Hon. Tunji-Ojo noted that the graduation marks the successful completion of a deliberate national investment in human capacity development, institutional strengthening, and public safety.
Addressing the graduating cadets, the Minister said:
“You began this journey as ordinary citizens with aspirations to serve. Today, you stand before us as disciplined officers—trained, tested, and trusted—ready to shoulder the solemn responsibility of safeguarding lives and property across the nation.”
He described the training exercise as unprecedented in both scale and significance, with over 700 cadets trained simultaneously, making it the largest single training course in the history of the Federal Fire Service. According to him, the programme signals a strategic shift from reactive emergency response to proactive national preparedness.
The Minister further explained that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, which prioritizes the protection of lives and property, institutional reform, and effective service delivery.
He added that the training extended beyond drills, fire suppression techniques, and emergency response tactics, noting that the cadets were also moulded in leadership under pressure, crisis decision-making, teamwork in adversity, and discipline in the face of risk.
He emphasized that these qualities can not be improvised during emergencies but must be built through rigorous training. Commending the training officers, Hon. Tunji-Ojo praised their dedication, discipline, and commitment to excellence, stating that the quality, confidence, and composure displayed by the cadets were clear evidence of their professionalism. Charging the officers of Regular Course 06, the Minister urged them to wear their uniforms with pride, humility, and honour, adding that leadership is not defined by rank but by responsibility. He advised them to serve with courage, act with integrity, lead with compassion, uphold the Constitution, respect human dignity, and remain loyal to the unity and peace of Nigeria. He further stressed that the Federal Fire Service has evolved beyond emergency response into a critical pillar of national safety, disaster risk reduction, and community resilience, urging the officers to serve as ambassadors of reform, professionalism, and renewed public confidence.
In his remarks, the Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Engr. Samuel Adeyemi Olumode highlighted key achievements recorded since assuming office. These include strengthening operational readiness nationwide, expanding capacity for public safety, training and graduating 700 cadets in Jos, rehabilitating and deploying modern fire appliances to commands across the country, improving officers’ welfare, launching nationwide fire safety awareness campaigns, and implementing institutional reforms aimed at efficiency, accountability, and community-focused service delivery promising to do more.
Also speaking, the Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Her Excellency Mrs. Ngo Josephine Piyo urged the graduating cadets to be courageous, disciplined, and humane in the discharge of their duties as fire safety officer.
