*THE MAN WHO HAS SUED PETER OBI OVER ACADEMIC RECORDS IS NOT A MEMBER OF THE LABOUR PARTY*

The Labour Party notes with particular concern a disturbing news item making the rounds in some quarters of the media, alleging that one Abayomi Arabambi, who has purportedly dragged the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to court over Mr. Peter Obi’s academic records, did so as a member of the Labour Party.

When the attention of the Party was first drawn to the circulation of this story on social media, it initially chose to remain silent, believing that issuing a reaction would only help to feed the desires of some clout chasers. However, a reaction has become inevitable now that the story has found its way into some mainstream newspapers, including respected media organisations such as The Punch and Vanguard newspapers, where the Party noticed captions which read: *“LP chieftain sues WAEC, UNN, NYSC over Obi’s credentials”* and *"2027: Obi’s credentials under probe as LP chieftain sues WAEC, UNN, NYSC",* respectively.

While the Labour Party wishes to refrain from commenting on the substance or otherwise of the litigant’s case before the court, particularly as Mr. Peter Obi is not a member of the Party, the Labour Party wishes to notify the general public that Abayomi Arabambi is not a member of the Labour Party.

On Wednesday, 18th March 2026, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party suspended 25 of its members for various infractions bordering on anti-party activities. That suspension, which was made public and widely reported by several mainstream media organisations across the country, included the said Abayomi Arabambi and a few other former members.

The suspension was subsequently ratified by the National Convention of the Party, the highest decision-making organ of the Labour Party, on 28th April 2026. Following the said ratification, the affected members ceased to be members of the Party. It is also worth mentioning that, since the above decision was taken by the Labour Party, no organ of the Party has sat to revisit or reverse the decision concerning the expelled members.

It is therefore against this background that the Labour Party wishes to inform the general public, and particularly the media, that Abayomi Arabambi is not a member of the Labour Party and could not have instituted any action in court as a member of the Party, having long severed ties with the Labour Party.

If Abayomi Arabambi has presented himself to the public as a chieftain or representative of the Labour Party, the general public is hereby notified that such representation is entirely unauthorised and, prima facie, amounts to impersonation. The matter is currently being reviewed by the Party’s lawyers for the purpose of determining the appropriate legal and other steps that may be taken, including a possible petition to the relevant law enforcement authorities.

Finally, the public is hereby notified that this press release is issued solely to clarify the alleged relationship between the litigant and the Labour Party and has no bearing whatsoever on the validity or otherwise of his claims against Mr. Peter Obi before the court.

The Labour Party nonetheless hopes that this statement has put the matter in its proper perspective and, most importantly, clarified the status of Abayomi Arabambi vis-à-vis the Labour Party.

LABOUR PARTY COMMISERATES WITH NLC OVER THE DEATH OF EMMANUEL UGBOAJA

The leadership of the Labour Party has expressed deep sadness over the death of Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who passed away recently at the age of 60.

Comrade Ugboaja was a strong unionist, a committed democrat and a pillar of support to the current leadership of the Labour Party. His death leaves a painful void not only in the Labour movement but also in the Labour Party family.

He played a pivotal role in the enviable relationship that currently exists between the Labour Party and the organised labour movement, particularly the NLC. He actively participated and made invaluable contributions to several meetings and deliberations that culminated in the birth of our new Party Constitution.

The Labour movement and the Labour Party family will continue to miss his invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the Party, a political platform whose birth he actively participated in.

Comrade Ugboaja was a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) that approved the formation of the Party for Social Democracy (PSD) in 2003, which later metamorphosed into the Labour Party in 2004. He subsequently rose to become the Deputy National Secretary of the Party and also served as National Secretary of the NLC Political Commission.

Beyond his contributions to the Labour movement and the Labour Party, Comrade Ugboaja played several important roles in the struggle for the sustenance and deepening of Nigeria's democracy, an ideal that places him firmly within the core values and vision of the Labour Party.

As a member of the defunct National Constitutional Reform Conferences of 2005 and 2014, the nation will continue to remember Comrade Ugboaja's immense contributions in shaping the final reports of the above two conferences.

He was also a Director of the Alliance for Credible Elections, where he championed a national campaign between 2007 and 2010 for electoral reforms. The campaign contributed to the process that culminated in the establishment of the Justice Uwais Electoral Reform Committee by the then President, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

Comrade Ugboaja's life was therefore one of service to the Labour movement, the democratic cause and the Nigerian nation. His contributions to these causes will remain a part of our collective history and will not be forgotten.

While we mourn this painful and irreparable loss, the Labour Party extends its heartfelt condolences to the leadership and entire membership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the organised labour movement, his colleagues, friends and associates, and, most importantly, the immediate family he leaves behind.

We pray that God Almighty grants eternal rest to his soul and gives his family, the Labour movement and the entire nation the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

LABOUR PARTY WELCOMES SENATE'S PASSAGE OF THE STATE POLICE BILL

The Labour Party commends the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, for its courage, swiftness and sense of patriotism in passing the State Police Bill recently transmitted to it by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

For years, Nigerians across all regions have clamoured for a more effective and responsive policing architecture capable of addressing the growing and increasingly complex security challenges confronting the nation. The passage of this Bill therefore represents a significant step towards strengthening internal security and bringing law enforcement closer to the people.

While the Party acknowledges the concerns expressed in certain quarters regarding the possibility of abuse of the state police system, especially in view of our experience with State Independent Electoral Commissions and allegations of undue interference by some state governors, the realities of contemporary Nigeria make a compelling case for a decentralised policing structure.

The Labour Party is particularly encouraged by the constitutional safeguards embedded in the amendment Bill, especially the provisions contained in Section 17, which establish clear mechanisms to prevent abuse and ensure accountability in the operation of state police. These safeguards, if faithfully implemented, should serve as effective checks against arbitrary control or misuse of the system by any state executive.

The Party further notes that no policing model is perfect. However, given the evident limitations of the current centralised policing arrangement in adequately securing a vast and diverse country such as Nigeria, there is an urgent need to embrace innovative approaches and fresh ideas capable of improving security outcomes for citizens.

As the Bill now awaits the concurrence of the State Houses of Assembly before being transmitted to the President for assent, the Labour Party calls on governors and state lawmakers across the 36 states of the federation to rise above partisan considerations and lend their support to this important constitutional reform in the overriding interest of national security and public safety.

The Labour Party believes that with proper oversight, transparency and adherence to constitutional provisions, state policing can become a vital instrument for combating crime, enhancing community security and strengthening the federation.

LABOUR PARTY COMMENDS INEC FOR INCLUDING ITS CANDIDATE IN THE ENUGU NORTH SENATORIAL BY-ELECTION

The Labour Party wishes to commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for correcting the earlier omission of the Party and its candidate from the list of contestants for the forthcoming Enugu North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026.

It will be recalled that when the Commission initially published the list of political parties and candidates cleared to participate in the by-elections across the country, the Labour Party and its candidate were conspicuously absent from the Enugu North Senatorial District poll, despite the Party having duly complied with all constitutional and statutory requirements.

However, following engagements with the leadership of the Commission, the oversight has now been rectified, and the Labour Party and its candidate have been appropriately included in the election. The Party is therefore fully prepared to participate in the by-election and offer the people of Enugu North a credible and people-oriented representation in the remaining part of the 10th Senate.

Consequently, and as stated in our previous communication on the matter, the Labour Party continues to express confidence in the leadership of Prof. Joash Amupitan and his commitment to fairness, justice, and due process. By ensuring that the right thing was done, the Commission has demonstrated responsiveness and reinforced public confidence in the electoral process.

The Party also wishes to appreciate its teeming supporters, members, and well-wishers who showed concern and made enquiries regarding the status of the Party in the forthcoming poll. Your vigilance, commitment, and unwavering faith in the Party remain invaluable.

As the campaigns enter their final phase, the Labour Party wishes its candidates in Enugu North, Nasarawa North, Rivers South-East, as well as all its candidates participating in the various by-elections across the country, success at the polls. Press Release From the Labour Party

LABOUR PARTY SUBMITS LIST OF INTERIM STATE WORKING COMMITTEES TO INEC, CONSTITUTES MEMBERSHIP REVALIDATION COMMITTEE

In line with the Constitution of the Labour Party and the resolutions of the Statutory NEC meeting held on 18th July 2025 at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, the Labour Party on 5th December 2025 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the list of State Working Committee members for 32 states of the Federation and the FCT.

The State Working Committee lists for Ondo, Ekiti, Niger, and Kwara States are currently being finalised and will be forwarded to INEC in a subsequent correspondence. The Labour Party urges party faithfuls in the affected states to remain patient as urgent steps are being taken to resolve local issues involving party leaders in these four states.

Furthermore, as part of renewed efforts to strengthen the party’s preparedness for the 2027 presidential, national, and local elections, the Labour Party has notified INEC of the constitution of a National Steering Committee for Membership Revalidation/New Registration. This committee will also oversee the national launch of the Labour Party’s Nationwide Membership Drive, codenamed Labour Party Connect 10 Million Nigerians… Connecting 10 Million Patriots for a New Nigeria.

The Membership Revalidation/New Registration exercise is chaired by His Excellency, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Deputy Governor of Abia State, with Comrade Ladi Iliya and Dr. Kingsley Okundaye serving as Deputy Chairmen with Kamal Yusuf Ahmed as Secretary.

The Labour Party enjoins its members and teeming supporters nationwide to take full advantage of the revalidation exercise scheduled to commence on December 17, 2025 and end on January 20, 2026, in order to revalidate their membership of the party. The party also calls on Nigerians who continue to bear the brunt of the current APC government's misrule to register with the Labour Party and be part of the movement for a New Nigeria.

The Party also urges the newly constituted Interim State Working Committees to cooperate fully with the National Steering Committee for Membership Revalidation/New Registration to ensure a seamless exercise and to help the party surpass its projected target of registering 10 million members within the stipulated time frame.

The Labour Party expresses profound appreciation to the Nigerian people, especially the media, for their steadfast support during recent challenging times. We urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant, as the forces that orchestrated the past crises - now resolved by the apex court - are still lurking around.
