Just In: Federal High Court Sentnces Nnamdi Kanu to Life Imprisonment
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment after an appeal for leniency urged the court to temper justice with mercy.
The sentencing was delivered on Thursday following an hours-long judgment in which Kanu was convicted on all t+rrorism-related charges brought by the Department of State Services (DSS) on behalf of the Federal Government.
Justice Omotosho ruled that Kanu would serve life imprisonment on counts one, two, four, five, and six â all of which ordinarily carry the d+ath penalty.
He further held that the sentences on counts three and seven would run concurrently.
According to the court, Kanuâs declarations of sit-at-home orders in the South-East, along with repeated threats of v+olence and k%llings made in several broadcasts, amounted to acts of t+rrorism.
The judge also upheld the conviction on count three, which stated that Kanu, on various dates between 2018 and 2021, professed himself to be a member of IPOB, an organization already proscribed in Nigeria.
âGod will P„nish You now and Foreverââ Nnamdi Kanu tells Lawyer after Judge sent him out of Court
The Federal High Court in Abuja witnessed tense moments on Thursday as IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu lashed out at some lawyers after his hearing. While being escorted out by DSS operatives, Kanu turned to the lawyers and declared, âGod will p„nish you now and forever,â causing murmurs across the courtroom.
Kanu, visibly angry throughout the session, also condemned Nigeriaâs judicial process. âAny judgement day in this country is rubbish,â he said sharply as the judge stepped out. During the hearing, he openly challenged Justice James Omotosho, questioning the legal basis of the courtâs decisions and demanding the written law guiding the charges against him. âWhere is the law?â he asked. âShow me where the written law is.â
Court observers noted that Kanu complained that his rights were being ignored and accused some lawyers of collaborating with the government to âsuppress the truth.â He insisted the court was not following due process and that anyone supporting injustice would face consequences.
As DSS operatives led him out, he repeated his warning to the lawyers, maintaining that they would answer before God for their actions, while his supporters watched silently from the gallery.
