As I prepare to speak at NOG Energy Week 2026, marking the NOG 25th Anniversary, taking place from July 5 to 9 at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, I look forward to sharing perspectives on the policy and regulatory developments shaping Nigeria’s hydrogen economy, in line with the Energy Commission of Nigeria’s mandate to promote sustainable energy development and drive the energy transition.

My presentation will examine the role of enabling policies, strategic partnerships, innovation, and investment frameworks in accelerating hydrogen development and commercialization while highlighting their importance in strengthening energy security, attracting investment, and advancing long-term decarbonization.

Three-day gathering to advance national alignment on Nigeria's pathway to a low-carbon hydrogen economy

Abuja, Nigeria, Monday, 21st June, 2026. The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), in partnership with the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, will convene the Strategic Awareness and Alignment Summit on the Low-Carbon Hydrogen Economy from 23 to 25 June 2026 at the National Bureau of Statistics, Central Business District, Abuja.

The Summit will bring together senior representatives from over fifty federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies, alongside private sector partners, academic institutions, and international development partners.

Nigeria holds some of the continent's largest natural gas reserves and among its strongest renewable energy resources, yet has not led the early wave of African hydrogen investment now underway in Morocco, Egypt, and Namibia. The Summit's underlying purpose is to position Nigeria to leapfrog conventional energy transition timelines – closing that gap rather than following it – by building the shared national understanding and institutional alignment required to convert existing resource advantage into early, decisive action.

Across three days, the Summit will examine Nigeria's pathway to a low-carbon hydrogen economy through fifteen technical sessions covering production technology, infrastructure and logistics, market and finance mechanisms, governance frameworks, and regional integration. The programme draws on Nigeria's existing legal and policy framework, including the National Energy Policy 2022, Climate Change Act 2021, the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, the Energy Transition Plan, and the National Industrial Policy 2025.

The Summit's design rests on the principle of Strategic Awareness and Alignment – bringing public sector institutions and private sector stakeholders to a common national understanding of Nigeria's hydrogen pathway, and a shared focus on the actions each can take from where they stand. Discussions across the three days will culminate in a 10-Point Hydrogen Leapfrog perspective, offered as a contribution to ongoing national discourse on Nigeria's low-carbon hydrogen economy, alongside voluntary institutional commitments.

Speaking ahead of the Summit, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of ECN, said the gathering reflects work the Commission has carried out since the inauguration of its Hydrogen Committee in 2023, including its role as Project Executing Entity for Nigeria's Child Project under the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation's Global Clean Hydrogen Programme – one of nine countries selected globally for the programme's first phase.

The Summit is supported by the European Union under the EU-Nigeria Energy Diplomacy Support Project, with additional engagement from the German-Nigeria Hydrogen Office, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, the African Development Bank, and other international partners.

A Sneak Peek into the Activities of the Director General/CEO, Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, on 16 June 2026.

Tuesday, 16 June 2026, was marked by a series of high-level engagements for the Director General/CEO of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, reflecting his unwavering commitment to advancing national development and strengthening inter-agency collaboration.

The day's activities commenced with Dr. Abdullahi joining the Honourable Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Hon. Zephaniah Bitrus Jisalo, alongside other senior government officials, at the official launch of the compendium titled "Actualizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda through the Implementation of Zonal Intervention and Constituency Projects (2023–2026)," held at the State House, Abuja.

Thereafter, the ECN Director General proceeded to the "Second Edition of the International Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation", where he participated alongside the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh and other key stakeholders at the TY Danjuma Foundation Centre, Central Business District, Abuja. The Conference provided a platform for robust discussions on the role of science, technology and innovation in driving sustainable national development.

From the Conference venue, Dr. Abdullahi paid a courtesy visit to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammad, mni, during which he briefed the Permanent Secretary on the numerous initiatives, achievements and activities undertaken by the Energy Commission of Nigeria since his assumption of office. The Permanent Secretary expressed satisfaction with the Commission's progress and reaffirmed his support for the Director General's efforts and the Commission's mandate.

The day's engagements culminated with a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Musiliu Olalekan Oseni, who warmly received the Director General and his team. Both leaders held fruitful discussions on issues of national importance and explored areas of mutual interest and collaboration between their respective agencies.

The series of engagements emphasizes Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi's dedication to fostering strategic partnerships, promoting innovation, and advancing the Energy Commission of Nigeria's mandate in support of the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda.

ECN DG REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT AT SESN INAUGURATION AND FELLOWSHIP CONFERMENT

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, has reiterated the Commission’s commitment to promoting renewable energy development and strengthening partnerships that support sustainable national growth.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Board of Trustees, Patrons, Sub-Committee Chairs, and the Conferment of Fellowships of the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria (SESN) in Abuja, Dr. Abdullahi commended the Society for its contributions to renewable energy advocacy, research, capacity building, and stakeholder engagement.

He highlighted the importance of affordable and sustainable energy to Nigeria’s development and noted that the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda is advancing energy access through the deployment of decentralized solar solutions to schools, healthcare facilities, and other public institutions nationwide.

The ECN boss also praised the longstanding collaboration between ECN and SESN and congratulated the newly inaugurated officials and fellowship award recipients for their contributions to the growth of the renewable energy sector. Dr. Abdullahi reaffirmed ECN’s readiness to deepen collaboration with SESN in driving innovation, sustainability, and national development through clean energy initiatives.

ECN DG Inspects Ongoing Solarization Project for the Provision of an Alternative Energy Source (Solar Mini-Grid) at the Commission’s Headquarters

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, today inspected the ongoing Solar Mini-Grid installation project at the Commission’s headquarters. The inspection forms part of the Commission’s efforts to advance sustainable energy deployment and demonstrate leadership in the adoption of renewable energy technologies.

Accompanied by the Commission’s directors, the Director-General assessed the progress of the project and commended the quality of work being delivered by the service provider and project vendor. The Commission’s management also expressed confidence in its decision to adopt LONGi solar technology for the project, citing the company’s reputation for manufacturing high-performance, reliable, and industry-leading solar photovoltaic modules that meet international quality standards.

Upon completion, the off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) system will provide uninterrupted power to the Commission’s headquarters, enabling the facility to operate independently off the national grid. This milestone further reinforces the Commission’s commitment to supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the promotion of clean, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions.

The project underscores the Commission’s dedication to energy security, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency. It is also expected to serve as a model for the deployment of renewable energy systems across public institutions and other sectors of the Nigerian economy.

The Commission remains steadfast in its mandate to drive innovative energy initiatives that support Nigeria’s transition to a cleaner, greener, and more resilient energy future.
