Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and Nigeria’s GIABA National Correspondent, Hafsat Abubakar Bakari, joined colleagues and partners in Dakar, Senegal, on August 31, 2026, to honour the outgoing Director-General of the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), Edwin W. Harris Jr., at a ceremony marking the formal transition of leadership.
For the NFIU CEO, the occasion was more than a formal change of leadership. It was an opportunity to celebrate a professional relationship that has grown over the years into one marked by mutual respect, friendship and shared commitment to strengthening financial intelligence cooperation across the region.
In her tribute, the CEO reflected on her longstanding association with Mr Harris, dating back to his time as Director of the Liberia Financial Intelligence Unit and President of the Forum of FIUs of GIABA Member States, during which she served as Executive Secretary of the Forum.
She described him as a leader whose accessibility, warmth and commitment to the work of Financial Intelligence Units left a lasting impression, noting that his departure was not simply the closing of a professional chapter, but also a farewell to a valued colleague and friend.
While expressing appreciation for his service and contributions to GIABA, she wished him well in his future endeavours and welcomed the incoming Director-General, Mam Cherno Jallow, assuring him of Nigeria’s continued support and partnership.
The ceremony provided a fitting and heartfelt moment to acknowledge Mr Harris’s years of service, the relationships built along the way and the collective responsibility of GIABA Member States to sustain the progress made in strengthening the region’s fight against money laundering and other financial crimes.
