Today marks a historic and groundbreaking milestone in the annals of the Federal Cooperative College Oji River, Enugu State.
In a truly epic and transformative event, the College was officially announced as the host of the Thai–Nigeria Sustainable Agricultural Technology Learning Centre — a landmark international partnership that positions our institution at the forefront of agricultural innovation, technology transfer, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
This prestigious initiative, will be funded by the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) under a technical collaboration between Federal Cooperative College Oji River and Kasetsart University (KU) Thailand . It represents a bold step toward strengthening South-South cooperation in agricultural research, smart farming technologies, capacity building, and food systems transformation.
The high-profile event was graced by distinguished representatives of TICA, KU, and the Royal Thai Embassy Abuja, whose presence underscored the global significance of this partnership.
This is more than an announcement — it is the dawn of a new era.
The Provost of FCCO, Dr Jude Obidiegwu buttressed the importance of the proposed center while aligning it to national policies fostering food security, poverty reduction and improved livelihood systems. The Thailand Ambassador to Nigeria His Excellency Mr. Thirapath Mongkolnavin highlighted that the proposed Center will create unparalleled opportunities for innovation, practical training, knowledge exchange, advanced agricultural technology deployment, and the empowerment of future agricultural leaders across Nigeria and beyond.

#ระหว่างวันที่ 3–8 พฤษภาคม 2569 สถานเอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงอาบูจา ร่วมกับกรมความร่วมมือระหว่างประเทศ กระทรวงการต่างประเทศ และผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ ได้ลงพื้นที่สำรวจเพื่อเตรียมดำเนินโครงการนำร่องด้านการเพาะเลี้ยงสัตว์น้ำและการเกษตรอย่างยั่งยืน ณ วิทยาลัย Federal Cooperative College Oji River (FCCO) รัฐ Enugu โดยมุ่งเน้นการดำเนินงานจริงในพื้นที่ เพื่อสร้างต้นแบบที่สามารถขยายผลในระดับภูมิภาคภายใต้กรอบ Thailand–Africa Initiative (TAI)

โครงการจะเริ่มจากความร่วมมือด้านการเพาะเลี้ยงสัตว์น้ำ โดยเฉพาะการเพาะพันธุ์ปลาดุกสายพันธุ์ท้องถิ่น การพัฒนาระบบ hatchery และการจัดการอาหารสัตว์น้ำ ควบคู่กับการสาธิตการใช้เครื่องจักรกลการเกษตรขนาดเล็กจากไทยสำหรับเกษตรกรรายย่อย พร้อมทั้งจัดตั้ง Thai Corner ณ FCCO เพื่อแสดงบทบาทของไทยด้านความร่วมมือเพื่อการพัฒนา

ในระหว่างการเยือนไนจีเรีย คณะฯ ยังได้หารือกับผู้แทนระดับสูงของกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ และกระทรวงเกษตรและความมั่นคงทางอาหารของไนจีเรีย ซึ่งเป็นต้นสังกัดของวิทยาลัย FCCO รวมถึงหน่วยงาน CGIAR/IITA และ FAO Nigeria ซึ่งต่างเห็นพ้องว่าแนวทางของไทยมีจุดแข็งด้านการดำเนินงานเชิงปฏิบัติ การพัฒนาระดับชุมชน และการใช้เทคโนโลยีที่เหมาะสมกับบริบทของแอฟริกา โดยมีศักยภาพพัฒนาเป็นศูนย์การเรียนรู้ระดับภูมิภาคในอนาคต

During 3–8 May 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy in Abuja, Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, and experts from Kasetsart University, conducted a field mission to the Federal Cooperative College Oji River (FCCO) in Enugu State. The visit aimed to assess and prepare for the implementation of a flagship project on aquaculture and sustainable agriculture. The initiative emphasizes practical, on-the-ground implementation to develop a model for regional expansion under Thailand–Africa Initiative (TAI).

The project focuses on cooperation in aquaculture, particularly the breeding of local catfish species, the development of hatchery systems, and feed management. This will be complemented by demonstrations of small-scale agricultural machinery from Thailand, tailored for smallholder farmers. A “Thai Corner” will also be established at FCCO to showcase Thailand’s contributions to development cooperation.

During the visit to Nigeria, the delegation also held discussions with senior representatives from the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security of Nigeria, which oversees FCCO, as well as with CGIAR/IITA and FAO Nigeria. All parties expressed strong support for Thailand’s approach, highlighting its strengths in practical implementation, community-based development, and the application of appropriate technologies suited to the African context. The initiative also has strong potential to develop into a regional learning center in the future.

This project reinforces Thailand’s role in development diplomacy and science diplomacy by fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders. At the same time, it creates opportunities for greater engagement of Thai private sector actors in Nigeria, in line with a Public–Private–People Partnership (PPPP) approach.

รัฐบาลไทยได้ตอบรับข้อเสนอแนะของ UN ในการให้ความช่วยเหลือด้านมนุษยธรรมแก่พื้นที่ที่ประสบปัญหาการขาดแคลนอาหารในไนจีเรีย

เมื่อวันที่ 31 มีนาคม 2569 สถานเอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงอาบูจา ได้มอบเงินสนับสนุนเข้ากองทุน Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF) ซึ่งบริหารโดย UN OCHA เพื่อช่วยเหลือผู้ได้รับผลกระทบจากวิกฤตดังกล่าว

ปัจจุบัน สถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ อยู่ระหว่างการดำเนินการร่วมกับโครงการอาหารโลก (WFP) เพื่อส่งมอบข้าวไทยสำหรับแจกจ่ายแก่ผู้ที่ประสบปัญหาขาดแคลนอาหารในพื้นที่ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของไนจีเรีย

The Royal Thai Government has responded to the United Nations’ recommendation to provide humanitarian assistance to areas affected by food shortages in Nigeria.

On 31 March 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy in Abuja contributed to the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF), managed by UN OCHA, to support those impacted by the crisis.

The Embassy is currently working with the World Food Programme (WFP) to deliver Thai rice for distribution to people facing food shortage in Northeastern Nigeria.

Mr. Thirapath Mongkolnavin, Ambassador of Thailand to Nigeria and attended by officials of the Royal Thai Embassy and their spouses, as well as Thai Trade Center in Abuja.

On Saturday, 25 April 2026, the Embassies of ASEAN Member States in Nigeria—namely Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam—jointly organized the 2nd ASEAN Mini Bazaar at the premises of the Royal Thai Embassy and the Embassy of the Philippines. On this occasion, the Embassies of China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, as well as the Chinese Cultural Center in Nigeria and the Korean Cultural Center in Nigeria, also participated, making this year’s event an ASEAN+3 Mini Bazaar.

On this occasion, H.E. Mr. Thirapath Mongkolnavin, Ambassador of Thailand to Nigeria, in his capacity as Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Abuja (ACA), delivered the opening remarks. The event was graced by H.E. Ambassador Mohammed Idris Haidara, Director of the Asia-Pacific Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, as the Chief Guest.

The event served as a platform to showcase a wide variety of food, snacks, and beverages from ASEAN Member States. The Royal Thai Embassy, Thai Trade Center in Abuja together with Thai businesses in Abuja, showcased a range of Thai products and Thai cuisine, including dishes prepared with jasmine rice such as Tom Yum Goong Fried Rice, Beef Holy Basil Fried Rice, Old-school Thai Fried Rice with Chicken, Korat-style Pad Thai with Chicken, and Mango Sticky Rice. Beverages included longan juice, butterfly pea with lemon, coconut juice, and roselle juice, as well as Thai coffee and tea. Local snacks such as chin-chin and plantain chips were also offered with Thai-inspired flavors. In addition, booths displayed Thai cooking ingredients, clothing, handicrafts, and Thai wellness and spa products. The event welcomed over 500 attendees, and proceeds from the bazaar will be donated to charitable organizations in Nigeria.

The Embassy also organised the “Chud Thai AI Photo” activity, which promoted awareness and appreciation of Thai traditional attire among Nigerians and expatriates residing in Nigeria. The activity received strong interest from participants. The event also featured traditional Thai massage.

The ASEAN+3 Mini Bazaar helped promote the cultures, cuisines, and unique identities of participating countries among Nigerians, the diplomatic corps, and the international community in Nigeria. It also contributed to strengthening mutual understanding among peoples and further enhancing the cordial relations between ASEAN Member States and Nigeria, as well as ASEAN+3 partner countries.
