Ondo NOA Director Calls for Political Tolerance to Promote Democratic Stability
The Ondo State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mrs. Olufunke Moradeyo Adekunle, has called on Nigerians to embrace political tolerance as a critical factor in promoting democratic stability, national unity, and sustainable development.
Mrs. Adekunle made the call during the agency's weekly radio programme, Orientation Hour, aired on Positive 102.5 FM, Akure, on Friday.
The State Director, represented by the Assistant Director and Head of Youth Engagement and Inclusion, Mr. Akinde Babatunde, spoke on the topic, “Political Tolerance as an Antidote for Democracy Sustainability in Nigeria,” emphasizing the need for political actors, electorates, and the general public to embrace tolerance in addressing political, economic, and personal challenges.
According to him, tolerance is one of the core values being promoted under the National Identity Project and the National Values Charter championed by the Director-General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu. He noted that meaningful development can only thrive in an atmosphere of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
Mr. Akinde urged citizens to practise tolerance across political, religious, educational, and social spheres, stressing that such an approach is essential for strengthening the nation's unity and development.
He also encouraged young people to actively participate in the democratic process by following the electoral timetable and guidelines released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), thereby enabling them to exercise their franchise during elections.
Mr. Akinde further stated that youths are increasingly being engaged by the Federal, State, and Local Governments in governance and development initiatives. He therefore advised them to shun political thuggery and instead become active contributors to nation-building.
He maintained that the attainment of national peace, unity, and sustainable development depends largely on the cultivation and practice of tolerance among all Nigerians.

EBOLA ALERT: ONDO NOA URGES RESIDENTS TO REMAIN VIGILANT, REPORT SUSPICIOUS CASES IMMEDIATELY
The Ondo State Directorate of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged residents to remain vigilant following heightened global concerns over the spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Although no confirmed case has been recorded in Nigeria, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has placed the country on high alert to prevent any possible outbreak.
The Agency warned that Ebola is a severe and highly infectious viral disease transmitted through direct contact with infected blood, body fluids, or contaminated materials. Common symptoms include sudden fever, weakness, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain, and unexplained bleeding from parts of the body.
Residents were advised to maintain proper hygiene by washing hands regularly, avoiding contact with sick persons or bodily fluids, and refraining from handling bush meat or dead animals. Citizens were also urged to promptly report any suspected case to the nearest health facility and avoid spreading rumours or false information capable of causing panic.
Travellers returning from countries with confirmed Ebola outbreaks were advised to closely monitor their health and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear. Healthcare workers were equally urged to maintain strict infection prevention measures, use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and immediately isolate and report suspected cases.
The Ondo NOA emphasized that vigilance, early reporting, discipline, and public cooperation remain critical in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, stressing that collective responsibility is essential to keeping Ondo State and Nigeria safe.

Justice Sector Gets Boost as Ondo Assembly Passes Reform Bills
The Ondo State House of Assembly has passed bills to amend the Ondo State Law Commission Law, 2001, and the Ondo State Office of the Public Defender Law, 2004, in a move aimed at strengthening justice administration and improving operational efficiency in the state.
The bills scaled third reading during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, following the presentation of reports by the Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Public Petitions, Ethics and Privileges, Hon. Stephen Abitogun.
Abitogun said the amendments would prevent interference from lawyers in Ministries, Departments and Agencies who are not officers in the chamber of the Attorney-General, while also improving efficiency, reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks and boosting the morale of legal officers.
According to the amended law, the Permanent Secretary to the Commission shall be appointed by the Governor from among the most senior legal officers in the Directorate cadre of the Office of the Attorney-General.
The report also amended Section 10(4) of the principal law, making the Permanent Secretary the accounting officer responsible for the control and disbursement of the Commission’s funds, while capital expenditure would require prior approval of the Commission.
Similarly, Section 11 was amended to empower the Permanent Secretary to prepare annual recurrent and capital expenditure estimates for the Commission, subject to approval by the Commission and the State Executive Council through the Attorney-General.
The bill was adopted through a voice vote following a motion moved by the Leader of the House, Hon. Olatunji Oshati, and seconded by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ololade Gbegudu.
Speaking after the passage of the bills, The Speaker, Rt. Hon (Chief) Olamide Oladiji, expressed confidence that the laws would strengthen the justice system, improve professionalism among legal officers and enhance service delivery within the state’s legal institutions.
Oladiji also commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, members of the Judiciary Committee and stakeholders for their contributions during the public hearing process.
In a related development, the Assembly also passed amendments to the Office of the Public Defender Law, 2004, providing for the appointment of a Permanent Secretary from among the most senior legal officers in the Directorate cadre of the Office of the Attorney-General to oversee the administration of the office.

Public Hearing: Stakeholders Seek Improved Justice Administration in Ondo
Stakeholders in Ondo State have highlighted the numerous benefits attached to the proposed amendment bills seeking to strengthen the Ondo State Law Commission and the Office of the Public Defender, saying the reforms would improve justice administration and enhance operational efficiency in the sector.
The stakeholders spoke during a public hearing organised by the Ondo State House of Assembly on bills seeking amendments to the Ondo State Law Commission Law, 2001 and the Office of the Public Defender Law, 2004, held at the Assembly complex in Akure.
Former Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Barrister C.K. Akinrinsola, described the proposed amendments as long overdue, stressing that the passage of the bills would reposition the Ministry of Justice and its agencies for greater effectiveness.
According to him, the amendments would improve the morale of lawyers in the ministry, strengthen administrative structures and ensure better service delivery in line with international best practices.
Akinrinsola noted that the proposed new designations would enable officers to effectively cope with expanding responsibilities, reduce workload and align the system with global standards.
Other stakeholders who submitted memoranda before the committee also made observations and recommendations on issues relating to appointments and hierarchy within the ministry.
They stressed the need for the provisions guiding appointments and promotions to reflect seniority in line with public service rules.
Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Public Petitions, Ethics and Privileges, Hon. Stephen Abitogun, said the amendments were aimed at reviewing the status, designation and responsibilities of accounting officers within the two institutions.
Abitogun explained that the proposed laws were designed to strengthen the administrative and financial structures of the agencies in line with current public service reforms, accountability and efficient justice administration.
He noted that the Ondo State Law Commission and the Office of the Public Defender occupy strategic positions in the justice sector, adding that while the Law Commission drives law reforms and legal development, the Office of the Public Defender ensures access to justice for indigent and vulnerable citizens.
The lawmaker added that stakeholders contributions and constructive engagements would assist the Assembly in making laws capable of improving justice delivery in the state.
He appreciated participants for honouring the invitation to the hearing on behalf of the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon.Olamide Oladiji.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Barrister Umar Onimisi, commended the committee for initiating the process and appealed to the Assembly to expedite action on the bills for prompt assent by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Speaking during the vote of thanks, the Clerk of the House, Barrister Benjamin Jaiyeola, expressed optimism that the amendments would bring positive changes to the justice sector, particularly by enabling the sector to have more than one Permanent Secretary.
Jaiyeola also commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for creating additional offices within the Ministry of Justice to accommodate the proposed Permanent Secretaries, while praising the Speaker and lawmakers for ensuring that the bills successfully scaled first and second readings on the floor of the House.

NOA Urges Residents to Participate in CVR, Ondo South By-Election
The State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Ondo State Directorate, Mrs. Olufunke Moradeyo Adekunle, has called on eligible Nigerians to actively participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and avoid waiting until the last minute before registering.
Mrs. Adekunle made the appeal during a live sensitisation programme, Orientation Hour, aired on Positive FM 102.5, where she educated listeners on the importance of voter registration and participation in the electoral process.
According to her, the current phase of the Continuous Voter Registration began on May 11th and will end on July 10th, 2026. She explained that the exercise is meant for citizens who have attained the age of 18, persons who have never registered before, individuals seeking transfer of voter registration due to relocation, and those whose Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are missing, damaged, or defaced.
Mrs. Adekunle noted that citizens who wish to transfer their voter registration from one state or locality to another can do so by presenting their old voter cards at designated registration centres. She added that individuals who lost their PVCs are required to provide evidence such as police reports or affidavits before replacements can be processed.
The NOA Director further disclosed that the registration exercise is taking place at designated ward centres across Ondo State from 9:00am. to 3:00pm. daily, adding that special consideration would be given to elderly persons, pregnant women, and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) during the exercise.
She emphasised that the registration process is completely free and warned citizens against paying money to anyone for voter registration or PVC processing.
Speaking on the forthcoming Ondo South Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20th, Mrs. Adekunle urged eligible voters in the affected local government areas to participate peacefully and responsibly in the electoral process.
She also cautioned Nigerians against vote-buying, stressing that collecting money from politicians in exchange for votes undermines democracy and weakens citizens’ ability to hold elected leaders accountable.
In her concluding remarks, Mrs. Adekunle encouraged all eligible citizens to take advantage of the remaining registration period to obtain or update their voter cards, noting that active participation in the electoral process remains a civic responsibility and a vital contribution to nation-building.
The National Orientation Agency therefore urged residents of Ondo State and Nigerians at large to support democratic governance by registering and participating fully in electoral activities.

NOA Advocates Grassroots Awareness as NHRC Holds Human Rights Action Plan Consultative Meeting in Ondo
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in collaboration with Kumnoth International Limited, has held a state consultative meeting with critical stakeholders in Ondo State on the implementation of the 2024–2028 National Action Plan (NAP) for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in Nigeria.
The programme, held on Wednesday, 13th May, 2026, brought together representatives of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), security and paramilitary agencies, civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations, including the National Orientation Agency (NOA).
Speaking at the meeting, the Ondo State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Mrs. Olufunke Adekunle Moradeyo, emphasised the importance of sustained grassroots sensitisation in promoting and protecting human rights across the state, noting that the Commission could leverage the agency’s established community-based structure to educate citizens on their rights and available legal remedies.
Represented by the Human Rights and NAP Desk Officer, Barrister Adu Oluwatoyin, she noted that NOA, with its presence across communities in the state, remains strategically positioned to drive sustained awareness campaigns on the promotion and protection of human rights, adding that increased sensitisation would help citizens better understand their rights, responsibilities and available channels for redress, while also promoting peaceful coexistence and respect for the rule of law.
According to her, human rights education at the grassroots level is essential to building a more informed, responsible and law-abiding society, stressing that when citizens are adequately enlightened about their rights and civic responsibilities, cases of abuse, discrimination and injustice would be significantly reduced while public confidence in government institutions would also improve.
Earlier in his remarks, the Ondo State Coordinator of the NHRC, Sunday Oyewole, who represented the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu, said the National Action Plan remains the most comprehensive human rights document in Nigeria.
He stressed the need for stakeholders to embrace the Action Plan and work collectively towards its successful implementation, noting that the protection of human rights is a collective responsibility.
During discussions, stakeholders identified major challenges confronting human rights protection in Nigeria, including extrajudicial killings, corruption and inadequate public awareness of human rights issues.
Participants at the meeting unanimously agreed that the promotion and protection of human rights should be seen as the responsibility of every citizen and institution, stressing that all MDAs must recognise that their activities play critical roles in safeguarding human rights in the country.
