Nigeria today remains one of the 10 most dangerous countries in the world for a woman to give birth, accounting for an estimated 14 percent of maternal deaths worldwide each year. But despite these bleak national statistics, there are signs of growing opportunity. In recent years, the federal government has devoted greater policy attention and resources to maternal health than previously, and a handful of state governments are beginning to tackle the challenge in a strategic and comprehensive way.
In Ondo State, the Abiye (Safe Motherhood) program is winning praise as one such promising model, creating incentives for expectant mothers to seek care and for health providers to deliver quality services. Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, a medical doctor and architect of the Abiye model, will describe the program’s achievements to date and challenges ahead. Dinesh Nair, World Bank senior health specialist for Nigeria, will describe the Bank’s “results-based financing” pilot program in Ondo. Murtala Mai, former country director for Nigeria, for Pathfinder International, will describe the broader maternal health trends in the country.

BREAKING: Mimiko gets a second term as Ondo governor The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the incumbent Ondo State governor and candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Olusegun Mimiko as winner of Saturday’s governorship election.
A PARTNERSHIP to boost cultural, industrial and educational advancement between Ondo State and the State of Maryland in the United States (U.S.) has been sealed,
Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who spoke through his Special Assistant on International Relations and Diaspora Matters, Mrs. Remi Duyile, said the joint venture was sealed under the Maryland Sister -State Programme.
Mimiko said the new relationship also involved Cross River State and nine other countries like China, Mexico, Russia, Estonia, Japan, Brazil, Poland, Vietnam and Korea and that all the participating countries have signed the agreement.
Stressing that the partnership would serve as a gateway to global connections for sustainable development of the state, Mimiko said the relationship was strategically chosen to enhance the economic, cultural and educational interest of the state.
Ondo will pay N18,000 and has started paying the relativity @ N14,000 acceptable to Ondo workers. Edo only promised, no payment. Ekiti, Ogun, Osun are paying 13, Oyo is offering ridiculous 9 thousand. Who is better? A state paying or those promising with no hope of getting it. Who demands equity must come with clean hands.
