A Memorable Morning in New York with His Excellency, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim CFR
A trip to North America for my daughter's graduation in Toronto unexpectedly led to one of the most meaningful moments of my journey. While in New York, I had the privilege of meeting Ambassador Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, for a breakfast discussion at my residence, Millennium Hilton One UN Plaza.
The meeting offered valuable insight into Nigeria's diplomatic engagement at the world's foremost international institution. What began as a brief conversation became an engaging exchange on diplomacy, governance, leadership, international relations, and Nigeria's role in the evolving global order.
Dr. Ibrahim, renowned for his intellect and accomplishments across business, public service, and diplomacy, spoke with depth and candour. Our discussion explored multilateral diplomacy and opportunities for Nigeria and Africa within the changing landscape of global governance.
Following breakfast, Ambassador Ibrahim graciously invited me to visit his office at the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations, where I gained firsthand insight into the work of Nigeria's diplomatic team in advancing our national interests.
His office reflected both elegance and purpose, embodying Nigeria's diplomatic presence. Most striking, however, was the Ambassador's commitment to service, dedication to projecting Nigeria positively, and confidence in our country's potential.
As I departed, I reflected on the significance of the encounter. Amid the joy of celebrating my daughter's achievement, the morning reinforced how meaningful conversations with visionary individuals can inspire optimism about the future.
It was a memorable part of an already special journey, blending family celebration with the value of friendship, intellectual exchange, and patriotic service. For this hospitality and insightful engagement, I remain grateful to Ambassador Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR, whose dedication to Nigeria's cause at the United Nations exemplifies the highest ideals of diplomacy and national service.

Sunday Dare at 60: A Life of Purpose, Patriotism, and Relentless Service
My Dear Egbon Sunday Dare,
As you gracefully attain the remarkable milestone of sixty years, I join your family, friends, associates, admirers, and countless beneficiaries of your generosity and service in celebrating a life defined by purpose, patriotism, excellence, and unwavering commitment to nation-building.
Sixty years is no ordinary accomplishment. It is a moment for reflection, gratitude, and recognition of a journey marked by impact. In your case, it is a celebration of a man who has consistently distinguished himself in every sphere he has occupied; whether as a journalist, public servant, administrator, strategist, communicator, mentor, or patriot.
From your formative years as a courageous and principled journalist, you established a reputation for professionalism, intellectual rigour, and an unwavering commitment to truth. You brought honour to the noble profession of journalism through fearless reporting, thoughtful analysis, and a deep concern for the welfare of society. Your pen was never merely an instrument of commentary; it was a tool for advocacy, enlightenment, and positive change.
Your transition into public service only amplified those qualities. As Minister of Youth and Sports Development and in the several national assignments entrusted to you, you demonstrated that leadership is not about occupying office but about creating value. You championed initiatives that inspired young Nigerians, promoted excellence in sports administration, and contributed meaningfully to the advancement of our national aspirations.
Yet beyond the public accomplishments and official recognitions lies the essence of the man I have come to know and admire, a man of uncommon energy, extraordinary dedication, and relentless commitment to any cause he believes in.
One of the most remarkable qualities about you is your absolute devotion to duty. When entrusted with responsibility, you commit yourself wholly to its success. You pursue excellence not as an aspiration but as a standard. This trait has been particularly evident in your steadfast commitment to the vision and leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
Your loyalty to the ideals of the Renewed Hope Agenda and your determination to support every initiative capable of advancing the success of this administration are both admirable and inspiring. You approach every assignment with a profound sense of purpose, working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that policies, programmes, and strategic engagements achieve their intended outcomes. In an era where commitment is often professed but seldom demonstrated, you stand out as a man whose actions consistently validate his convictions.
I had the privilege of witnessing this exceptional dedication firsthand during the organisation of the recently concluded South-West Summit in Akure. Serving alongside you on the planning committee offered me a unique opportunity to observe, at close quarters, the depth of your commitment and the intensity of your work ethic.
You were relentless.
At virtually every hour of the day, and sometimes late into the night, you reached out repeatedly, not out of routine obligation but out of genuine passion for the success of the summit. You sought ideas, requested suggestions, interrogated strategies, refined plans, and pursued every conceivable avenue that could improve the quality and impact of the event. Your singular focus was excellence.
Indeed, there were moments when I found myself wondering what more you would have done had the summit been your own birthday celebration or wedding ceremony. Such was the level of commitment you brought to the assignment. No detail was too small for your attention; no challenge was too difficult for your determination; no sacrifice was too much in pursuit of success.
That extraordinary diligence, infectious enthusiasm, and unwavering sense of responsibility explain why you have earned the respect and admiration of colleagues across political, professional, and social divides. You possess that rare ability to inspire confidence, mobilise people, and transform vision into reality.
As you celebrate this diamond jubilee, it is fitting to acknowledge not only your accomplishments but also the values that have made those accomplishments possible: integrity, resilience, loyalty, discipline, humility, patriotism, and an abiding faith in the possibilities of our great nation.
Nigeria has been enriched by your service. Your colleagues have benefited from your friendship. Younger generations continue to draw inspiration from your example. And those privileged to work with you have witnessed firsthand the uncommon passion you bring to every endeavour.
As you enter this new chapter, I pray that Almighty God grants you continued good health, renewed strength, greater wisdom, enduring peace, and abundant joy. May He preserve you for many more years of impactful service to humanity and our beloved country. May your latter years surpass your former years in fulfilment, influence, and accomplishment.
Happy 60th Birthday, my Egbon Minister!
May history remember you not merely for the offices you held, but for the lives you touched, the institutions you strengthened, the young people you inspired, and the noble causes you championed with uncommon courage and conviction.
Congratulations on sixty remarkable years of purpose, service, and excellence.

Develop or Lose Abandoned Properties, Ondo AG Moves to Enforce Urban Development Law
…proposes relocation of College of Agriculture, warns environmental law violators
Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Ajulo Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, OON, has signalled a major urban renewal drive that could compel owners of abandoned and undeveloped properties across major cities in the State to either develop such buildings, surrender them for redevelopment by investors, or face government intervention under existing urban planning laws.
The Attorney General stated this while delivering a lecture titled "Rule of Law and Urbanisation of Our Cities" at an event held in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
According to the Chief Law Officer, who cited Akure metropolis as a case study, several buildings located in strategic economic areas of the city have remained abandoned for decades and no longer align with the developmental vision of a modern Ondo State.
"There are buildings in this city that have remained in the same condition for over 30 years, since some of us were students at Aquinas College. Such structures do not complement the developmental strides going on in the state." He said.
Dr. Ajulo disclosed that part of the proposed reforms includes the full digitisation and computerisation of land administration in Ondo State to ensure proper monitoring, planning, documentation, and compliance with urban development regulations.
He also referenced the Executive Order signed by Governor Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa last year, which mandates strict compliance with physical planning and development control regulations for all new structures, especially within the State capital.
According to him, the current administration is not only focused on land protection but also committed to structured urban transformation and sustainable city development.
"Akure, Ondo, Owo, Ore, Ikare, Okitipupa, and other cities cannot remain in their old settings. Deliberate efforts must be made for Akure to sustain its developmental pace and evolve into a first-class urban economy." He stressed.
The Attorney General warned that owners of abandoned properties located along major roads and within Akure metropolis, whether commercial or residential, must be prepared to either develop such structures or relinquish them to the government for proper urban redevelopment. He noted that the Nigerian Land Use Act empowers a State Governor to acquire land for overriding public interest, provided due process is followed and appropriate compensation is paid in accordance with the law.
"Look at an area like Alagbaka, which hosts several strategic government offices and is one of the first places anyone would want to show a visitor entering the state capital. Yet some buildings along that corridor have remained abandoned and uncompleted for over 20 years, still in deteriorating condition. Some are overgrown with weeds, while others remain unpainted and neglected." He said.
Dr. Ajulo disclosed that the government has already compiled records and title details of several affected properties and has commenced official engagements with owners as part of formal warning measures.
"At our end, we have compiled the titles of many of these properties and are already reaching out to their owners as a form of official notice and warning. Beyond constituting environmental nuisance, such abandoned structures also pose serious security threats to surrounding neighbourhoods, as they could serve as hideouts for criminal activities." He stated.
He further pointed to institutions occupying large expanses of land within rapidly expanding urban centres, noting that Akure has outgrown several institutional layouts originally designed for its earlier scale of development.
"Now think of an institution like, is it College or University of Agriculture and Forestry, situated in the heart of the capital city. Objectively, where will the institution have adequate space for practical training? Where will students farm or carry out sufficient agricultural practice? Are they expected to farm within the city where there is hardly any available land? Even if the government intends to invest heavily in such practical programmes, there would naturally be limitations to what can realistically be achieved within that environment.
"Such an institution should be considered for relocation to a more spacious environment where modern agricultural training, practical farming activities, research, and academic expansion can properly take place.
"They need a suitable environment where practicals can be effectively taught and where the institution can operate on between 1,000 and 5,000 hectares of land, as ideally required for a College or University of Agriculture and Forestry. Recently, Ondo State allocated over 5,000 hectares of land to a private agricultural firm under a properly structured agreement, and the facility is already in active use. Even students from such institutions are benefiting through work-study arrangements where they earn salaries based on services rendered at the facility. Such models represent the kind of practical agricultural development we should be encouraging." Dr. Ajulo stated.
The Attorney General further disclosed that the government would collaborate with relevant Federal Ministries in considering the proposal, while also working closely with the Ondo State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Renewal to review and implement updated masterplans for major cities across the State, beginning with Akure, with the aim of transforming them into modern and economically viable urban centres.
On enforcement, Dr. Ajulo said the process would be systematic, lawful, and institutionalised rather than arbitrary.
"All necessary legal and administrative procedures would be deployed to restore order, improve aesthetics, strengthen security, and sustain the serenity of Akure and other major cities across the State. This will not be about harassment. It will be a structured process backed by law, planning regulations, stakeholder engagement, and public interest." He said.
While reacting to concerns about the cleanliness and general condition of Akure metropolis, Dr. Ajulo commended the efforts of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in promoting a cleaner, more organised, and environmentally sustainable capital city.
He, however, stressed that residents must also complement government efforts by maintaining proper environmental discipline, warning that indiscriminate dumping of refuse, defacement of public infrastructure, and violation of environmental regulations would attract strict enforcement and sanctions.
“There is a general environmental sanitation exercise every last Saturday of the month, but citizens must remain patriotic by prioritising a hygienic environment through daily cleaning habits and proper refuse management.
"Environmental officers and relevant agencies responsible for sanitation and urban order are already being strengthened by the government, with closer collaboration now expected with the Office of the Attorney General to ensure the effective prosecution of habitual environmental offenders. There was also an incident where environmental officers were obstructed and harassed while carrying out their duties, the perpetrators were arrested, charged to court and made to perform community service. He concluded.

Ondo APC Primaries, Allegations Against Governor Aiyedatiwa,False, Malicious and Criminal- A
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr Kayode Ajulo, OON, SAN, says the State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa did not use state machinery to influence the outcome of the on-going All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries.
In a statement released on Thursday in Akure, the state’s Chief Law Officer described the accusations in some quarters as “baseless, malicious, and bereft of any iota of evidence,” insisting that such allegations stermed from frustrated political ambitions rather than facts.
The Attorney General, while emphasising his statutory responsibility to protect the government and the rule of law, described such allegations against the State Governor as deeply disturbing and Malicious
“As the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, and by virtue of the sacred mandate vested in me under Section 211 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), it is not merely my right but my profound constitutional duty to defend the Government, its institutions, and the rule of law against unfounded attacks.
It is equally my sacred responsibility to ensure that every action of the government I serve is firmly rooted in justice, fairness, equity, and the unwavering principles of the rule of law.”
Dr Ajulo expressed deep concern over the campaign of calumny against the Governor, describing the allegations as patently false and carrying grave criminal liabilities.
“It is deeply disturbing to me… that all the allegations levelled against Governor Aiyedatiwa and the state government are patently false and malicious"
According to him, the orchestrated falsehood became obvious as not a single one of these allegations has been substantiated with any credible evidence even in this age of advanced technology and pervasive social media,
He attributed the attacks to “transferred aggression, noting that some individuals whose political aspirations were not met have resorted to vilifying the Governor and the government.
“This shall not stand. The full instrumentality of government and the law will be deployed to legally address these infractions in accordance with the dictates of justice,” the Attorney General warned.
The Chief Law Officer highlighted Governor Aiyedatiwa’s massive popularity, citing his historic victory in the November 16, 2024 gubernatorial election as one of the examples
of the Governor’s Record-Breaking Popularity.
“It is no gainsaying that Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa commands the deepest respect, admiration, and affection of the entire populace of Ondo State. He polled the historic and record-shattering figure of 366,781 votes — the highest ever secured by any gubernatorial candidate in the annals of our State — defeating his closest rival with 117,845 votes and sweeping all 18 Local Government Areas.”
The Attorney General maintained that the APC primaries followed due process and were rooted in extensive consultations.
He explained that the preferred candidates emerged from “extensive negotiations” and broad-based stakeholder engagements, culminating in ratification by 10 respected leaders from each of the 18 Local Government Areas.
The process, he said, complied fully with the APC Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022 (Section 84), which permit consensus arrangements when properly conducted.
“Far from any government imposition, this is democracy in its consultative and inclusive form, designed to foster unity and spare our party the bitterness of divisive primaries,” the AG noted.
He urged aggrieved aspirants to channel their concerns through the party’s internal mechanisms rather than resort to media attacks.
The Attorney General called on all APC members and residents of Ondo State to remain united, focus on good governance, and ignore baseless propaganda.
He State Chief Law Officer strongly reaffirmed his support for Governor Aiyedatiwa’s leadership, and warned that the law will be applied against those peddling falsehoods.

Evolving Trends: Nigerian Legal Practice in a Globalised World – Reflections from the NBA-SLP 2026 Conference
The just-concluded 2026 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Legal Practice (NBA-SLP), held at the National Theatre, Lagos, under the compelling theme “Evolving Trends: Nigerian Legal Practice, Global Perspectives,” which I had the privilege to monitor provided a timely platform for honest introspection and forward-thinking discourse.
As the legal profession grapples with rapid technological disruption, globalisation, and shifting client expectations, the conference rightly challenged Nigerian lawyers to position themselves as active players, rather than passive observers, in the international legal arena.
Nigeria’s legal system, rooted in our federal structure and common law heritage, possesses inherent strengths: a robust constitutional framework, an independent judiciary (though often stretched), and a vibrant Bar known for its advocacy and resilience. Yet, the realities on the ground reveal persistent gaps.
Case backlogs remain alarmingly high, digital infrastructure in many courts is still rudimentary, and cross-border legal practice continues to face regulatory and capacity hurdles.
The Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and various state-level reforms have introduced commendable innovations in case management and decongestion of prisons, but implementation remains uneven across the federation.
Globally, legal practice is being reshaped by artificial intelligence, blockchain-enabled smart contracts, virtual dispute resolution, and data privacy regimes such as the GDPR and its emerging African equivalents.
Leading jurisdictions have embraced legal tech ecosystems, continuous professional development tied to emerging skills, and seamless integration into international arbitration and commercial frameworks.
Nigerian practitioners must now ask themselves: Are we merely adopting these tools, or are we innovating solutions that reflect our unique socio-economic and cultural context while meeting global standards?
The conference rightly emphasised that true evolution demands more than technology. It requires judicial integrity, ethical fortitude, and a commitment to access to justice for the ordinary citizen. It calls for law firms to professionalise, invest in research and knowledge management, and build collaborative networks that transcend borders.
The launch of the NBA-SLP National Law Firm Directory 2026 is a welcome step toward greater transparency and visibility for Nigerian practices on the global stage.
As one who has been privileged to serve in public stewardship, I believe the path forward lies in deliberate synergy: between the Bench and the Bar, between federal and state justice institutions, and between local excellence and international best practices.
Nigerian lawyers must master not only black-letter law but also the language of commerce, technology, sustainability, and transnational governance.
The future of Nigerian legal practice will not be defined by how loudly we complain about systemic challenges, but by how boldly we adapt, innovate, and lead.
The NBA-SLP 2026 Conference has thrown down the gauntlet. The question now is whether we, as a profession, will rise to it, equipping ourselves to serve Nigeria effectively while remaining competitive and relevant in a rapidly evolving global order.
The time for evolution is not tomorrow. It is now.

Ondo Attorney General Rallies Southwest Youths on Innovation, Discipline, Leadership for Future Readiness
..commends President Tinubu’s youth-driven agenda, lauds Gov. Aiyedatiwa’s empowerment initiatives.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr. Ajulo Olukayode Ajulo SAN, OON, has charged young people across the Southwest to embrace innovation, ethical leadership, and strategic preparation as pathways to shaping a resilient future.
Delivering a keynote lecture at the Southwest Youth Summit 4.0 held at the International Culture and Event Centre (The Dome) in Akure, Dr. Ajulo emphasised that the rapidly evolving global landscape demands a generation that is proactive, skilled, and purpose-driven.
Speaking on the theme "Driving Lasting Impact: Anticipating & Preparing Youth for Tomorrow’s Challenges," he described the future as one that must be deliberately built through foresight and disciplined action. He said "The future does not arrive unbidden, it is forged in the crucible of anticipation, preparation, and purposeful action."
Dr. Ajulo identified key challenges facing the youth, including technological disruption, climate change, economic restructuring, governance deficits, and growing social pressures. According to him, these realities require what he termed a "Renaissance mindset" that blends indigenous wisdom with global innovation.
Highlighting ongoing efforts by the government to reposition young people for impact, the Attorney General pointed to youth-focused policies and programmes at both national and state levels. He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for placing youth development at the centre of his Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that initiatives such as the Nigeria Youth Academy and the 3 Million Technical Talent Programme are creating opportunities for skills acquisition and enterprise.
Quoting the President, Ajulo said, “You are not only the future of Nigeria, you are our hope for a more glorious and assured future," adding that the administration’s investments are designed to give young Nigerians "wings to fly sky-high."
At the state level, he commended Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for what he described as practical and people-centred youth empowerment initiatives. He cited programmes such as "One Youth, One Skill," nano-grants for entrepreneurs, and the establishment of skill development centres as evidence of a government committed to building capacity and expanding economic opportunities.
“Visionary leadership is measured not by rhetoric, but by the doors it unlocks," Dr. Ajulo stated, noting that Ondo State is positioning itself as a hub for youth-driven innovation and inclusive growth.
He urged young people to become "ethical disruptors," climate-conscious innovators, and institution builders, stressing that integrity remains the most valuable currency in a rapidly changing world. "Build boldly, innovate courageously, and execute with relentless discipline." He charged.
Dr. Ajulo concluded with a call for unity and action, urging participants to transform dialogue into measurable impact saying, the future belongs not to the timid, but to those who prepare today and strike with purpose tomorrow."
