ABOUT - State Secondary Education Board
Established in 1988, the Edo State Secondary Education Board, formally the Post Primary Education Board, operates under the Edo State Education Law of 1980, the Bendel State Post Primary Education Edict of 1988, and the Unified Teaching Service (Staff) Regulations of 1973. For the first time in over 30 years, the state government under the leadership of Hi
s Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki, embarked on ‘Comprehensive Secondary Education Reforms’ which commenced in September 2022. The overarching reform areas include; Governance, Innovative Teaching, Learning for Skills, School Environment, and Values. The Ministry of Education led by Dr Joan Osa Oviawe, spearheads the EdoBEST2.0 reforms, the Secondary Education Board is streamlined to function as a professional Board that provides technical expertise for the administration of secondary schools. To provide exceptional secondary education that empowers student leaders to harness their abilities in a dynamic learning environment, promoting academic excellence, character development, and a spirit of innovation. The first Phase of the Reform focuses on Human Capital Development:
• Improved School Leadership: We recognize that no organisation can perform above its leadership capacity, Consequently, Executive Principals are appointed through a merit-based process. This process is anchored on a stakeholder-led interactive session.
• Routine training of teachers: We are transitioning to school and cluster-based teacher training as a cost-effective option for routine teacher training.
– We identify top-performing teachers and deploy them as teacher mentors.
– We leverage technology by sourcing and distributing contents that align with our needs.
• Getting Teachers into Our Classrooms:
– Successful recruitment of 1500 teachers through the Edo Supporting Teachers to Achieve Results (EdoSTAR) fellowship program, marking the first teacher recruitment since 2011.
• Safeguarding
– Promoting safe schools.
– Create an enabling environment for girls and boys to SPEAK OUT against all forms of abuse.
– Raising boys that support girls.
• Extracurricular Activities:
– Expanded to include music, dance, choreography, etc., enriching student experience.
– Introduction of work readiness skills, robotics, coding etc. We understand the dynamic nature of the world and our management and teaching approach must reflect current trends.
• Maximizing Land by Investing in Agriculture:
– Strategic investment in agriculture to transform schools into food centres in the upcoming years.
• Cultivating a Clean and Green School Environment:
– Gradual cultivation of a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility.
– Students actively involved in cleaning classrooms twice a day, incentivized to maintain neatness.
• Values and Character Development:
– Rigorous adherence to high standards of behaviour.
– Implementation of disciplinary measures.
• Edo Anthem and Cultural Embrace:
– Encouraging students to sing the Edo Anthem with pride, fostering a sense of patriotism.
– Promoting "patriotism" as integral to the vision of "Making Edo Great Again."
• Expanded School Governance Through School Management Boards (Governing Council):
– Inclusion of the Old Students Association, Parents Council, Students Council, etc., contributing to holistic school governance.
• Expanding Options for Sustainability through Stakeholder Involvement:
– Acknowledging that sustainable reforms require active stakeholder ownership.
– Expanding partnership opportunities.
