You Can Begin Again

Sometimes, moving forward means taking a different route, slowing down, or finding the courage to begin again. Setbacks can be discouraging, but they do not erase how far you have come or the strength you have built along the way.

Give yourself permission to start small. Focus on what you can do today rather than everything that went wrong yesterday. Progress is not always about how fast you move, but your willingness to keep going. Every new attempt is an opportunity to learn, grow, and discover what you are capable of.

Your next step: Identify one thing that has been holding you back and choose one practical action you can take today to address it. It could be asking for support, revisiting a plan, or simply taking the first step you have been postponing. Start where you are, use what you have, and build from there.

ADVOCACY STARTS WITH SEEING THE PROBLEM

Bibi Bakare Yusuf: She Saw the Gap. Then She Built the Bridge.

Bibi Bakare Yusuf noticed a problem. There were African writers with stories worth telling, but many struggled to find publishers, while readers had limited access to books that reflected African experiences and realities.

In 2006, she and Jeremy Weate decided to do something about it. They founded Cassava Republic Press in Abuja, creating a publishing house that gave African writers a place to tell their stories and helped those stories reach readers both in Africa and beyond.

But Bibi’s work was never just about publishing books. It was about representation. It was about asking who gets heard, whose stories are considered important, and what happens when people are given the opportunity to tell their own stories.

Her story reminds us that advocacy can start with something as simple as noticing a problem and refusing to accept it as normal. Sometimes, you do not need to wait for someone else to create the change you want to see.
