Nigeria at 66: Wunti Urges Renewed Faith in One Nigeria, Calls for Economic Diversification and Peaceful Democratic Engagement

As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, Dr. Bala Maijama'a Wunti has urged Nigerians to renew their faith in the country and remain committed to building a united, peaceful and prosperous nation.

While acknowledging the challenges that have accompanied Nigeria’s journey since independence Bala Wunti said the country has every reason to celebrate its resilience, achievements and enormous potential.

In a statement signed by the chief communication officer, Bala Wunti Support Organisation, Abubakar Al-Sadique, Wunti called on Nigerians to use the anniversary as an opportunity to look beyond present difficulties and recommit themselves to building a stronger nation for current and future generations.

“In spite of the challenges that have tested our nationhood, Nigeria has every reason to celebrate 66 years of independence. Our journey may not have been without difficulties, but our human potential, natural resources and the resilience of our people give us compelling reasons to believe in Nigeria. We must fortify our faith in one united and prosperous Nigeria and commit ourselves to building the country we want future generations to inherit.”

Dr. Wunti urged the Federal Government to accelerate economic diversification and invest more deliberately in ICT, education, youth skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, innovation and productive sectors of the economy.

He said Nigeria’s vast mineral resources also present significant opportunities for investment, industrialisation, job creation and economic growth, stressing the importance of developing local value chains and attracting capital into commercially viable projects.

He noted that the country’s youthful population remains one of its greatest assets and called for sustained investment in human capital to equip young Nigerians with the skills required to compete and create opportunities in a changing global economy.

“A prosperous Nigeria cannot be built solely from what lies beneath the ground. It must also be built from what we put into the minds and hands of our people. Our greatest long-term investment must be in education, skills, innovation, agriculture, and enterprise, particularly for our young people.”

As the country continues to strengthen its democratic institutions, Dr. Wunti urged Nigerians to participate actively and responsibly in the democratic process, including elections and other forms of civic engagement.

He appealed to political actors, supporters and citizens to ensure that political campaigns remain constructive, issue-based and peaceful, with disagreements expressed through dialogue rather than violence.

“Our democracy is strengthened when citizens participate, ask questions, engage on issues and make their voices heard peacefully. Political competition should unite rather than divide us. We must reject violence, hate and destructive rhetoric and embrace constructive campaigns centred on ideas, policies and the future we seek for Nigeria.”

Dr. Wunti stressed that building a prosperous Nigeria is a collective responsibility requiring purposeful leadership, responsible citizenship, private-sector investment and sustained commitment to national unity.

He congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the 66th Independence Anniversary and expressed confidence in the country’s capacity to overcome its challenges and realise its vast potential.

Bala Wunti: From Connecting Students to Building the Future of Tertiary Education

By Abubakar Al-Sadique

The intervention of Dr Bala Maijama’a Wunti’s philanthropy in Bauchi Stata's tertiary institutions is gradually becoming a story of transformation — from connecting students to global knowledge networks to helping institutions build the physical spaces required to shape the future.

The latest chapter of this trend of Bala Wunti's intervention in tertiary education is the proposed 10,000-capacity Bala Wunti Arena at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, a multimillion-naira multi-purpose indoor sports hall expected to be completed within 50 weeks.

But the significance of the project goes beyond its impressive size. It reflects an expanding philosophy of educational philanthropy in which the needs of students and institutions are addressed from different directions: digital access, learning opportunities, creativity, skills development and now critical infrastructure.

For thousands of students across Bauchi State, one of the most practical challenges in modern education has been access to reliable internet. First, through interventions associated with the Bala Wunti Support Organisation, 32 tertiary institutions have benefited from free internet connectivity, with more than 61 devices installed across universities, polytechnics, colleges and professional institutions.

For a student, such an intervention can mean the difference between struggling to obtain research materials and accessing them instantly; between being disconnected from an online course and participating fully; between knowing about an opportunity and being able to pursue it.

In an increasingly digital academic environment, connectivity is no longer simply a convenience. It is part of the infrastructure of learning.

Bala Maijama'a Wunti’s philanthropy, however, is now moving visibly from the digital space into the physical environment of university life.

The Bala Wunti Arena is conceived as a facility that will serve not only sporting activities, but also academic programmes such as matriculation and convocation activities, conferences, institutional events and other major gatherings. It therefore has the potential to become more than a sports hall: it can become a common space for the intellectual, social and cultural life of ATBU, the first of it's kind in the country.

Perhaps even more significant is how the project was conceived. Rather than treating students merely as beneficiaries, Wunti invited them to become contributors. The architectural design was developed through a competitive process involving university students, with W-Nexus emerging as the winning team and receiving N5 million.

Other participating teams were also given various degree of rewards, while members of the assessment panel received recognition.

That decision captures an important feature of Wunti’s approach: giving young people opportunities not only to receive, but also to create.

It is a philosophy consistent with the broader pattern of his interventions. A scholarship can open the door to education. Internet connectivity can open the door to global knowledge. Skills and digital opportunities can open the door to employment and entrepreneurship. Infrastructure can provide the physical environment in which all these possibilities flourish.

Taken together, these interventions point to a conception of philanthropy that goes beyond handing out assistance. It is about expanding people's capacity to participate in the future.

There is also something fitting about the location of the latest project. ATBU is the institution that provided Wunti with part of the educational foundation upon which his professional journey was built. His decision to return to the university with an investment of this scale therefore carries the character of giving back to a place that helped shape his own story.

The significance may ultimately be measured not in the cost of the arena or the number of internet devices installed, but in what beneficiaries do with the opportunities created.

The student who accesses knowledge online may become a researcher. The young person who develops a new skill may become an entrepreneur. The student who participates in designing a major university project may discover a professional path. And the institution that gains better infrastructure may provide a stronger environment for generations of students yet to arrive.

That is why the Bala Wunti Arena represents more than another philanthropic project.

It is the latest physical expression of a wider educational intervention — one that has moved from connecting students to the world to helping build the spaces where the next generation will shape its own world.
