PAPER PRESENTATION

TOPIC: PREPARING FOR A PEACEFUL AND MEANINGFUL OLD AGE

1. INTRODUCTION

Old age is a natural stage of life that everyone hopes to reach with good health, peace of mind, dignity and fulfilment. However, the quality of our old age is largely determined by the choices, habits and relationships we build during our younger and active years.

Old age should therefore not be seen merely as a period of retirement, but as the outcome of how we have lived our lives.

2. FACTORS THAT MAKE OLD AGE BETTER

1. Financial Security:
Old age becomes more comfortable when we plan financially, save wisely and avoid unnecessary financial dependence.

2. Good Family:
Raising responsible and respectful children creates companionship, support and happiness in later life.

3. Honesty and Integrity:
A life lived honestly gives a person peace of mind and earns lasting respect.

4. Good Health:
Taking care of our physical and mental health from an early age can make old age healthier and more enjoyable.

5. Good Relationships:
Avoiding unnecessary conflicts and maintaining genuine friendships provide emotional support in later years.

6. Good Reputation:
A good name built through discipline, kindness and integrity becomes one of the greatest assets in old age.

7. Proper Planning:
Those who prepare early for retirement and other future needs are more likely to enjoy stability and independence.

8. Helping Others:
A life spent helping others creates meaningful relationships and leaves a positive legacy.

9. Clean Conscience:
Living according to good principles reduces regret and contributes to inner peace.

10. Patience and Self-Discipline:
Learning to control desires, manage emotions and exercise patience prepares a person for the challenges of later life.

3. THE IMPORTANCE OF STARTING EARLY

Old age does not begin when the hair turns grey. It begins with the decisions we make today. Our financial habits, health choices, relationships, character and attitude gradually determine the kind of life we will experience in the future.

Therefore, preparation for old age should begin while we are still young, energetic and economically active.

4. CONCLUSION

A peaceful and meaningful old age is not achieved by accident. It is built through wise planning, good health, financial discipline, strong family relationships, integrity, patience, friendship and service to humanity.

The best time to prepare for tomorrow is today. Every good decision we make now is an investment in our future comfort, dignity and peace.

FINAL MESSAGE

“The future will often reflect the choices we make today. Live wisely, treat people well, protect your health, build a good name and prepare for tomorrow.”

Thank you for your attention.

NSCDC KEBBI STRENGTHENS CNAI PROTECTION, TASKS AREA COMMANDERS, DIVISIONAL OFFICERS ON VIGILANCE

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kebbi State Command, has organised a one-day workshop for Area Commanders and Metropolitan Divisional Officers to strengthen the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) across the State.

The workshop, held on Monday, 5th October, 2026, focused on “The Roles and Duties of Area Commanders and Divisional Officers in the Protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI)”, with the aim of enhancing operational effectiveness, supervision, intelligence coordination and preventive security measures.

Presenting the paper, DCC Adepoju Florence Toyin emphasised that the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure is a core statutory responsibility of the Corps under the NSCDC Act 2003, as amended in 2007.

She identified critical infrastructure such as electricity installations, telecommunications facilities, pipelines, government buildings, schools, hospitals, bridges and other strategic assets as essential to national development and public safety.

DCC Adepoju charged Area Commanders to strengthen supervision, map vulnerable assets within their Areas of Responsibility, coordinate intelligence and deepen collaboration with sister security agencies and relevant community stakeholders.

She further tasked Divisional Officers to maintain updated CNAI registers, intensify patrols and surveillance, engage traditional rulers, youth leaders and vigilante groups, and prioritise prevention over reaction in the fight against vandalism and other threats to critical infrastructure.

The workshop also highlighted challenges including inadequate manpower and logistics, delayed intelligence, poor documentation of critical assets and possible compromise by individuals within communities or security structures.

Participants were encouraged to adopt the 3Ps approach — Prevention, Protection and Prosecution, while strengthening night patrols, quick-response mechanisms, proper shift handovers, accurate documentation and community sensitisation.

The workshop concluded with a call for the immediate audit and documentation of CNAI across Divisions, reactivation of Divisional CNAI patrol teams, regular review meetings and appropriate sanctions for negligence or compromise.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and urged all stakeholders and members of the public to support the Corps by providing timely information on suspected vandalism, theft or other threats to national assets.
