Mbah unveils multi-billion naira pharmaceutical company in Enugu

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has commissioned Anchorage Pharmaceutical Industries Limited, a multi-billion naira pharmaceutical company in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu.

The coming on stream of the company is expected to boost local drug manufacturing, create jobs and strengthen healthcare delivery in the country.

This was even as the Chairman of the company’s Board of Directors, Rear Admiral Allison Madueke (Rtd), commended Mbah for creating an investment-friendly environment in the state, describing Anchorage as a legacy project conceived to generate employment, develop local talent and contribute to economic development.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, Mbah said the facility represented more than a pharmaceutical business, describing it as an investment in public health, economic growth and the future of young people in the state.

The governor congratulated the company’s founder, board and management, noting that establishing a manufacturing enterprise required substantial commitment and confidence in the state’s economic prospects.

He said the facility would provide employment opportunities, offer internship placements and facilitate skills transfer, while supporting healthcare delivery across Enugu State.

Mbah disclosed that the government would explore commercial partnerships with the company to supply medicines to its central medical stores and primary healthcare facilities.

The governor further noted that the state was building 260 Type-2 primary healthcare centres, adding that the facilities would require reliable supplies of essential medicines to function effectively.

“We are interested in made-in-Enugu, and that’s what you’re doing here,” he said, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to partnering with private enterprises beyond providing an enabling environment.

Mbah added that private capital remained central to the state’s economic growth strategy, emphasising the need to retain skilled young people by creating opportunities for them to build their careers in Enugu.

Earlier, Madueke said Anchorage was the practical expression of his longstanding conviction that private enterprise could create jobs, broaden economic opportunities and improve prosperity.

The former Chief of the Naval Staff as well as ex military governor of old Anambra and Imo States said the company would prioritise product quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance and sound corporate governance, while acknowledging the role of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in safeguarding public health.

Madueke expressed confidence that Anchorage would contribute to the development of Enugu State, the South-East and Nigeria, while thanking Mbah for commissioning the facility and building a resilient business-friendly infrastructure.

In his closing remarks, the Managing Director of the company, Engr. Chima Madueke, said the company was founded on quality and wellness, encapsulated in its slogan, “Anchored in Quality, Committed to Wellness.”

According to him, the company had obtained the necessary approvals and clearances from NAFDAC and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), reaffirming its commitment to quality assurance.

He added that Anchorage would help tackle fake and substandard medicines in Nigeria, adding that it was open to direct supplies to hospitals, healthcare institutions and pharmacies.

Meanwhile, the commissioning underscores the growing role of private-sector investment in the Mbah administration’s drive to expand Enugu’s economic base, with the governor assuring investors of continued government support to improve the business environment and enhance returns on investment.

“It’s not debatable, we can’t go back,” Mbah Backs Tinubu on Fuel Subsidy Removal

Governor of Enug State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has doubled down in his support for the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying it was undebatable and inconceivable for anyone to imagine a return to the old order.

Mbah spoke at the “Meet the Candidates” town hall meeting organised by Afia TV in Enugu on Wednesday, where he also said that his administration had delivered good governance to the people of the state across all sectors.

He described it as a pathetic misconception of the country's situation and the direction it was headed for anyone to talk about the reintroduction of fuel subsidy.

“If you reintroduce fuel subsidy today, we will lose ten times whatever we are currently trying to gain in terms of the removal of subsidy. The poverty rate that you are going to experience will be very high because the naira would be automatically devalued.

“We cannot go back to subsidy. And I do not think it is in the interest of the country for us to even debate that.

“Again, we should not even debate it because we do not want to send a signal to prospective investors that we are contemplating it. That would take us back. It is going to create panic in the system. It is going to get investors to pull back.

“Those that are coming in today to invest in that sector will become jittery. So, it is not even a subject to debate. It is something that we have moved on from, and we should be thinking about how to ensure that the natural benefits cascade to the households, create jobs and generate wealth for our people,” he said.

He said the nation should focus on how to further encourage private capital to flow, noting the growth the nation had experienced in the stock exchange space.

He added that Tinubu’s policies had stabilised the macro indicators, thus encouraging foreign direct investment.

“You can see quite a lot of funds coming into our country, not just portfolio investments, but also direct investments. It is also going to strengthen because the macro indicators are right,” he stated.

Mbah maintained that whereas fuel subsidy removal enables the government to target the less privileged, fuel subsidy as earlier practised benefited the rich more.

“By the way, I do not think the subsidy we practised before the President removed it was even the right one for the country because even the people we were looking at benefiting from it were only insignificantly benefiting from it. It was largely beneficial to our wealthy folks.

“But now, you can almost notice that the government is doing that in targeting the poor, using proceeds from subsidy removal. The government is aggressive on cash transfers. There is also the programme where the government is targeting 1,000 persons per ward across the entire country to be able to provide seed capital for them to become productive,” he added.

Meanwhile, on his stewardship so far, Mbah said his administration had kept faith with the people of Enugu State, delivering good governance across all sectors in line with his campaign manifesto.

He said the people of the state only needed to imagine where the state was before his inauguration as governor and where it is currently headed.

“Let us imagine the Enugu we knew four years ago. Let us just imagine an Enugu without Hotel Presidential. Let us imagine an Enugu without the International Conference Centre. Let us imagine an Enugu without Enugu Air. Let us imagine Enugu without the transport terminals, the 268 Smart Green Schools, 260 Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres.

“You do not want them to imagine an Enugu without the International Hospital. You do not want them to imagine an Enugu without the CNG buses, the Nigergas. I think the list is endless.

“But I even think that we can stretch that imagination further because the work ahead will be more profound. Just imagine an Enugu where our children are receiving education that prepares them for the world because they have been imbued with evolving 21st-century skills. Imagine again an Enugu where you do not have any part of the city with an unpaved road.

“Also, imagine an Enugu in four years’ time that generates 660 megawatts of electricity; where we are able to provide 24-hour power supply; where you cannot come into your house and have the light off; and where people can run their businesses for a whole week without worrying about the cost of diesel. Just imagine an Enugu where you generate electricity and the people of Enugu are buying that at 120 naira because they own the coal that feeds the power plant.

“Imagine an Enugu where you now have to ride, not just on our CNG buses, but you have the monorail that can take you from point A to point B. Imagine an Enugu where you can fly from here to the United Kingdom, to the United States and other parts of the world,” he charged the electorate.

He urged the people to keep faith with the journey of greatness, growth and development, defending the gains of his first term and guaranteeing the promises of his second term by working for his re-election.

“If these imaginations capture our fancy, then we have a duty to fight for it. We do have a duty to continue to make sure that the bar does not come down and that the standard we have set in Enugu is sustained,” he concluded.

Kidnap Attempts, Abductions Prompted Ugwuaji Forest Deployment — Enugu Forest Guard

The National Forest Guard, Enugu State Command, has justified its deployment to the Ugwuaji–Obeagu forest corridor, citing reported cases of attempted kidnapping, armed attacks and abduction in the area as reasons for establishing a Forward Operating Base (FOB) to strengthen security.

The Command, in a press statement issued on Saturday by its Public Relations Officer, DSFG Uliaga Geraldine Chiagozie, said it was responding to allegations of harassment, assault, land grabbing and other misconduct levelled against its personnel and the State Commander, Dr. Akinbayo O. Olasoji.

It maintained that the deployment was aimed at protecting residents, farmers and investors from criminal activities, rather than intimidating residents or advancing private land interests.

According to the statement, the forest corridor connects Emene in Enugu East Local Government Area, Ugwuaji in Enugu South LGA and Akpugo in Nkanu West LGA across the river, making it a potential route for criminal movement across the three local government areas.

The Command cited an attempted kidnapping at the Ikorogwu Forest Axis of Obeagu–Ugwuaji Awkunanaw on May 20, 2026, as one of the incidents that informed its deployment.

According to the statement, operational reports indicated that three suspects attempted to force their way into a family residence and demanded that a woman open the door to enable them to abduct her husband.

The Command also cited an armed attack and abduction in August 2026 involving people working on a property in the Uzam-Agu/Chimeta forest area of Obeagu Awkunanaw.

It said Forest Guard operatives, working alongside Neighbourhood Watch personnel, rescued four people during the incident, while one man was abducted.

The statement added that subsequent search operations yielded information that the abducted man had been released and returned to the location from which he was taken. The incidents, it said, underscored the need for sustained security operations along the forest corridor.

“The FOB was established to strengthen preventive patrols, improve response and restrict criminal movement,” the statement said.

The Command also addressed a separate incident involving its personnel at Unity Estate, behind New Enugu Smart City, on September 30.

The Command alleged that a group of individuals, some of whom appeared to be soldiers, accompanied by unidentified civilians, held its personnel at gunpoint and assaulted them.
The incident, it said, also resulted in the destruction of two tents and solar equipment, while three phones belonging to the operatives were taken.

According to the Command, the incident prompted it to increase the number of personnel deployed to the area from the initial four to strengthen their protection and sustain security operations.

It, however, stressed that the identities and affiliations of those involved in the reported attack required investigation.

The Command further disclosed that personnel of the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police deployed to the area on October 15 and 16 verified the identities of the Forest Guard officers and men, as well as the official purpose of their presence at the FOB.

According to the statement, the military and police personnel withdrew to their respective bases after satisfying themselves that the Forest Guard operatives were carrying out legitimate security duties.

The Command commended both security agencies for their professional engagement in clarifying the situation and helping to de-escalate tensions.

It nevertheless stressed that the verification exercise did not eliminate the need to investigate specific allegations of misconduct, urging those making the allegations to provide verifiable evidence.

“The Command does not authorise land grabbing, enforcement of private land claims, intimidation of residents or assault on any person, including women,” the statement declared.

It also clarified that the establishment of the FOB did not determine land ownership, settle boundary disputes or confer title on any party.

The Command added that allegations linking the State Commander to unlawful land dealings should be backed by specific incidents, dates, witnesses and other relevant evidence to facilitate an independent investigation.

It called for the examination of original photographs and video recordings, personnel identification, deployment records and relevant arms authorisations to establish the identities and affiliations of individuals whose conduct had been questioned.

The Command assured the public that relevant records would be made available to competent investigating authorities.

On accountability, it invited affected residents, the authors and signatories of the publication containing the allegations, as well as other witnesses, to submit evidence to the appropriate investigative authorities.

It emphasised that complainants should not be intimidated or treated as criminals for making complaints in good faith, adding that any personnel found responsible for misconduct must be held accountable.

“Residents are entitled to effective protection from criminals and respectful treatment by security personnel. The National Forest Guard, Enugu State Command, remains committed to both responsibilities,” the statement added.

The Command urged investigators to examine both the allegations against Forest Guard personnel and the reported attack on its operatives, insisting that anyone found responsible for kidnapping, assault or other criminal activities should face justice.

It appealed to residents, community leaders and investors to remain calm, cooperate with the relevant authorities and allow verified facts to guide public discussion.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to working with communities and other security agencies to protect lives and property across Enugu State.

Enugu LG Councils to Begin Payment of 25-Year Gratuities Arrears

The Enugu State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has announced plans to commence the payment of outstanding gratuities owed to retired local government workers, with arrears dating back to 2000.

The Deputy Chairman of Enugu State ALGON, Hon. Ferdinand Ukwueze, disclosed this to Government House correspondents Enugu at the end of the 40th meeting of the Enugu State Economic Planning Commission chaired by Governor Peter Mbah.

Briefing alongside other Council Chairmen, Ukwueze, who is also the Chairman of Igboeze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, said that starting from October, the councils would dedicate 10 per cent of their monthly allocations to settling the decades old gratuities arrears until they're totally cleared.

The announcement comes a week after the Enugu State Executive Council approved over ₦32 billion for the payment of outstanding gratuities owed to retired state government workers, with arrears also dating back to 2000.

Briefing Government House correspondents, Ukwueze described the decision by the local governments as a historic step aligned with the Mbah administration’s commitment to ensuring that retirees who served the state at both state and local government levels receive their entitlements.

“One of the high points of today's meeting is that, in a very historic manner, the local government system in Enugu State has taken the bold step of aligning with the state's policy, particularly with respect to alleviating the hardship of the masses.

“In line with the payment of the legacy gratuity that the state government embarked on a couple of days ago, the local governments have also decided at the Economic Planning Commission meeting to step into that arrangement to make sure that we clear all the gratuity inherited by us,” he said.

According to him, the deductions from the councils' monthly allocations will commence this month and continue until the outstanding obligations are settled.

“Beginning from this month, we are going to key into what the state government has started implementing already by making sure that we offset those debts.

“The decision is that starting from this month, 10 per cent of our monthly allocation will be dedicated to that responsibility until it is cleared. So, once we start it, there is no going back. Every worker who worked in our local governments will have access to this entitlement,” Ukwueze stated.

He clarified that the arrears cover more than 25 years, dating back to 2000, and reaffirmed the councils’ commitment to clearing the outstanding obligations.

“For clarity, the arrears are from the year 2000, but, as I said, we are going to clear all the over 25-year legacy gratuities,” he reiterated.

Ukwueze said the initiative was aimed at improving the welfare of retirees who had devoted their productive years to public service.

“The essence of it, once again, is to put smiles on the faces of the masses, especially those of them who spent their youthfulness serving the public in our various local government areas,” he said.

He also pledged the continued support of local governments for the Mbah administration and its collaboration with relevant stakeholders to sustain peace and security across the state.

“Enugu State is safe. Enugu State is peaceful. And we will continue to partner with our governor and security agencies to keep it so,” he added.

Gov Mbah Seeks National Emergency in Education, Launches Enugu Education Policy

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has called for a quantum leap and the declaration of a national emergency in Nigeria’s education sector to guarantee the nation’s development and future prosperity.

Mbah argued that the audacity needed to fund a quantum leap in the nation’s education sector would flow from an appreciation of its necessity.

This was even as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), British Council, and other global and national education stakeholders have hailed the governor for making education the centerpiece of his administration’s development agenda.

The governor made the call in his keynote address at the 2026 Enugu Education Summit and the unveiling of the Enugu Education Policy at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, on Wednesday.

Speaking at the summit, themed, “Transforming Education for the Future: Leadership, Innovation, Partnership, Financing and Sustainable Reform,” he said Nigeria had reached the point where education must be treated as a national emergency.

“I believe Nigeria has reached the point where we must treat education as a national emergency.

“Not rhetorically, but in our budgets, our teacher development, our infrastructure, the standards we demand, and the partnerships we build between the Federal Government, states, development agencies, communities and the private sector.

“Our future prosperity depends upon the knowledge and capabilities of our people, after all. And that means every Nigerian child, wherever they are born, must have access to an education capable of preparing them for the world they are entering.

“Whatever education costs us today, ignorance will cost us far more tomorrow.

“Once we understand that, the question changes. It is no longer: Can we afford to make or fund this quantum leap? It becomes: What will happen to us if we do not?” he stated.

He further argued that no nation could truly eradicate poverty or achieve sustainable development without addressing the root causes of poverty, including lack of knowledge, know-how and the capabilities through which people create wealth, find employment, build enterprises, participate intelligently in society and determine the direction of their own lives.

“If we fix the road today but fail to educate the child who will maintain it tomorrow, how sustainable was our investment in the road?

“If we build factories but lack the skilled people capable of running increasingly sophisticated production systems, where is our own Industrial Revolution going to come from?

“And if millions of young people reach adulthood without the knowledge and capabilities to participate meaningfully in the economy, what exactly do we imagine the social cost of that will be?

“So, if Nigeria is to become a creation economy rather than a consumption economy, then we must equip our young people not simply to use what the world creates, but to research, design, engineer and create what the world needs.

“The point here is straightforward: transformation cannot survive on aspiration alone. Eventually, somebody has to pay for it,” he stated.

Mbah cited his administration’s decision to invest 33 per cent of the state’s annual budget in education for three consecutive years, building, among other facilities, 268 Smart Green Schools and more than 7,000 classrooms equipped with 21st-century learning tools.

“If Enugu’s experience offers one lesson, it is that when the scale of the challenge demands a quantum leap, audacity is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

“When we came into government, we had to look at that reality very closely. We could have repaired the existing system. We could have renovated some classrooms, supplied some desks, put computers into a few schools and called it reform.

“But we had to ask ourselves a more difficult question: would it be enough? Would an education system essentially designed for the world of 40 years ago prepare an Enugu child for the world of 20 years from now? Our answer was ‘No’.

“What we have attempted in Enugu is, therefore, not a collection of education projects. It is a change in the entire development model – a quantum leap,” he explained.

Unveiling the Enugu State Education Policy, Mbah explained that his administration was already implementing the policy, saying it would serve as the benchmark for the state’s education sector over the next six to 10 years.

“This is also a strong indication that nothing in our entire policy is knee-jerk – everything is a product of careful thought,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, represented by the UNICEF Chief of Field Office, Enugu, Mrs Juliet Chilewe, the agency’s Country Representative to Nigeria, Wafaa Saeed, said Enugu State had demonstrated a strong commitment to UNICEF’s vision of education transformation through investments in Smart Green Schools, teachers, foundational learning, digital literacy and experiential learning.

She said UNICEF was proud to have supported the development of the Enugu State Education Sector Plan 2026–2035.

In its remarks, UNESCO commended the governor for investing heavily in education, citing the 268 Smart Green Schools, the Centre for Experiential Learning and Innovation (CELI), and the plan to recruit more than 6,000 teachers.

Represented by the Officer-in-Charge of the Education Sector, Mr Adeyemi Oladeji, the UNESCO Representative to Nigeria, Dr Isaias Barreto da Rosa, said, “I congratulate Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his leadership and for making education the centerpiece of Enugu’s development agenda.

“The establishment of 268 Smart Green Schools is a landmark achievement that shows schools can be digitally enabled and environmentally responsible at the same time, preparing learners for a changing world while advancing the climate-conscious education that UNESCO promotes globally,” he stated.

Also, the British Council, represented by its Director on English and School Education, Nigeria, Fwanshihsak Daniel, expressed pride in the Mbah Administration's achievements in the education sector, saying it would continue to partner with the government to ensure that the good policies yield better outcomes in classrooms.

"We commend Enugu State's bold ambitions of an education system in which every learner develops strong foundations, creativity and the necessary skills to the society and the economy," Daniel added.

The Commissioner for Education, Enugu State, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, while thanking the Governor and stakeholders for their support, assured that Enugu had begun a journey of irreversible educational progress.

The high point of the event was the official unveiling of the Enugu State Education Policy and a tour of the exhibition of the Smart Green School Innovation Studio, set up by students of the state’s Smart Green Schools.
