Mbah Rewards Rangers Players, Management with Plots of Land, N150m for Winning NPFL

_...charges team to bring home continental trophy_

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has gifted players and management of Rangers International Football Club with plots of land and the sum of N150 million for winning the 2025/2026 NPFL title.

Mbah announced the gifts during a dinner reception he hosted in honour of the players, technical crew and management of the team at Government House, Enugu, on Tuesday night.

Rangers FC won the league for a record-equaling ninth time and also for a second time in three years under the Mbah Administration following a 2-1 win over Ikorodu City Boys in Lagos on May 24, 2026.

Speaking at the event, Mbah likened the reception to welcoming home a child who had excelled academically, saying the government and people of Enugu State were delighted to celebrate the team's success.

"We are providing you with a cash gift of N100 million for the players and N50 million for the technical and management crew.

"In addition to that, we have approved a plot of land in Enugu for every player, while additional plots will be allocated to the General Manager, Head Coach, Secretary and Assistant Coach," Mbah said.

The governor noted that Rangers was more than a football club, describing it as a symbol of resilience, unity, hope and social renewal established in the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War.

According to him, the club carries a rich history and legacy associated with football legends such as the late Christian Chukwu, Emmanuel Okala and Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha.

He commended the players, coaches and management for their hard work, sacrifices and discipline throughout the season, noting that the trophy was the product of countless acts of determination and effort.

Mbah also praised Rangers General Manager, Amobi Ezeaku, for his leadership, resilience and commitment, saying the qualities required to build a successful football club were similar to those needed to build a successful state.

The governor assured the team of continued government support, stressing that sports remained a key component of his administration's development agenda.

He also stated that renovation works at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, popularly known as “The Cathedral,” would be completed in time and to international standards for Rangers' continental matches.

He added that Enugu State, under his leadership, would continue to invest heavily in sports infrastructure and development, noting that the state would host the 2026 National Sports Festival in a manner that would leave lasting marks in the sands of time.

Mbah, however, identified complacency as an enemy of success, urging the team not to rest on their laurels and well-deserved accolades.

"So, brace up, fight on, keep winning and ensure you bring the continental trophy home," he concluded.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, thanked the governor for hosting the champions and for his sustained investment in sports development.

Ekweremadu described the league triumph as a testament to the governor's commitment to excellence and service delivery across sectors.

The commissioner recalled that Enugu State emerged overall winner of the National Para Games in March with 55 medals comprising 40 gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals.

Responding, Ezeaku noted that success was built on discipline, preparation and ambition, drawing inspiration from renowned philosophers such as Aristotle, Seneca and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
He emphasised that the celebration extended beyond the lifting of a trophy and represented a celebration of leadership, vision and the power of unity among government, management, players and supporters.

The General Manager expressed profound gratitude to Governor Mbah for his unwavering support of the club, stating that Rangers had enjoyed one of its most successful periods in recent history under the governor's administration.

According to him, Rangers has won two NPFL titles within three years of Governor Mbah’s tenure, a feat he described as remarkable in contemporary Nigerian football.

"This is credited to the governor’s commitment to sports development, youth empowerment and excellence, helping to restore the club’s competitive edge," he said.

The club also highlighted the governor’s broader achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, technology and economic development, while stressing that his contribution to sports deserves equal recognition.

Reflecting on the club’s title-winning campaign, Ezeaku revealed that the journey was marked by intense competition, with rival clubs reportedly receiving promises of substantial incentives, including cash rewards, vehicles and landed properties.

"Despite these developments, the club maintained focus and confidence, believing that hard work and excellence would ultimately be rewarded.

“We remained resolute and focused throughout the season. Our confidence came from our belief in the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah and our conviction that sacrifice and excellence would not go unnoticed,” he stated.

Looking beyond domestic success, he declared Rangers' intention to compete among Africa’s elite clubs and challenged stakeholders to support the club’s continental ambitions.

The general manager described Rangers as one of Africa’s historic football brands with the fan base, identity and pedigree to compete successfully at the highest level.

He expressed confidence that with strategic investment and continued government support, Rangers could one day lift the CAF Champions League trophy and bring continental glory back to Nigeria.

“Every great achievement begins as a dream. Today, we dream of Rangers defeating Africa’s biggest clubs and bringing the CAF Champions League trophy to Enugu,” the management said.

Meanwhile, Rangers FC and their fans had earlier celebrated their NPFL win at Okpara Square and paraded their trophy through the capital city with much jubilation and fanfare before retiring to Government House for the dinner reception and presentation of the trophy to the governor.

Take Ownership of Our Achievements, Gov Mbah Charges Enugu People

_...Marks 3rd anniversary with thanksgiving mass_

_...Msgr. Ike: Mbah a godsend to rescue Enugu_

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has enjoined the people of the state to take ownership of his administration’s achievements in the last three years, noting that change endures when citizens ensure the consolidation of every progress made.

Highlighting projects and progress made under the “Tomorrow is Here” philosophy since 2023, Mbah, however, said his administration's achievements could not be understood simply as a collection of projects.

He explained that the government was “rebuilding the operating system of this state and a different future is being constructed layer by layer – economically, culturally, and institutionally.”

Mbah, who spoke at a thanksgiving Mass held at Government House Chapel in Enugu to mark the third anniversary of his administration, noted that it would amount to a lost opportunity should the state revert to its socioeconomic conditions before the current administration.

He said, “Imagine waking up tomorrow and finding yourself back in the Enugu of three years ago. The roads are broken again. Gridlock clutters the junctions. Mondays fall silent under sit-at-home orders. Shops close. Businesses retreat indoors. Public transport becomes stressful and exhausting again. Schools drift further behind the modern world. Healthcare centres struggle to meet basic needs. Hotel Presidential slips back into decay. Rural communities remain cut off by weak infrastructure and poor connectivity.

“The tech hubs are gone. The innovation ecosystem disappears before it fully matures. Investment dries up.

“National attention moves elsewhere. International partnerships fade. The state begins losing confidence in itself again.

“Slowly, quietly, expectations begin shrinking again. How would that feel?”

As the 2027 general election draws closer, he warned against complacency among the electorate, reminding them that they had the power to fight for or squander the progress made, with each choice having far-reaching consequences for the future.

“History is full of people who reached this stage, relaxed too early, and stopped thinking like underdogs. Momentum made them comfortable. Success softened their discipline. They mistook winning a battle for winning the war.

“We cannot afford that mistake. Forces that threaten serious progress never disappear: political brinkmanship, short-term thinking, financial pressures, geopolitical instability, as well as people more interested in noise, ego, and personal advancement than long-term results.

“So, let us gather around what we have begun building here carefully. Let us protect it, strengthen it, campaign for it, bring more people into the fold, and help them understand why this moment matters,” he charged the people.

Meanwhile, earlier in his homily, scholar and Catholic priest, Prof. Monsignor Obiora Ike, commended Mbah for his numerous achievements and sterling leadership in the last three years, noting that the people of the state were fortunate to have him as governor.

Monsignor Ike said, “God has sent you, Peter, to be the rescuer of our people. We see the things you do and we clap, but we haven’t seen anything yet. The governor is intentional and plans all he does, not with a fire brigade approach.

“The governor is receptive to ideas and to beautiful changes. That is why I drive to my village at Ezeagu from the Amah junction and I don't see any potholes. And this is happening everywhere in Enugu.

“I will be flying to Abuja today on Enugu Air. The airline is putting Enugu on the world map because everyone who wants to buy a ticket will know about Enugu. So, we are on the map, not with wounds, but with things that make things happen.

“Many lives are being touched, not because we have a lot of money, but because there is willpower. An openness to the divine God to say, ‘Use me to change lives.’”

He added that despite mounting security challenges in Nigeria and around the world, Governor Mbah had worked hard to make Enugu safe through political will, investment in technology, and logistical support to security agencies in the state.

“Some days and weeks ago, there were shootings around the White House. So, insecurity is global. But Enugu is a place where we can move around. Many states cannot go out on Mondays. But Monday sit-at-home is a thing of the past here,” he said.

He urged the governor to ignore those who chose to be cynical, noting that “whatever they say, we know that this government is one like no other.”

He further commended the governor for being a quiet achiever and for his team selection, putting competence above politics and clannishness.

He expressed happiness that three years after assumption of office, Mbah was able to ensure a healthy political atmosphere in the state, citing the recent visit to President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, which brought together present and last leaders of the state.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai; the immediate past governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uchenna Ugwu; the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Raymond Ozoemena; Senator Osita Ngwu; Senator Kelvin Chukwu; Rt. Hon. Nnolim Nnaji; former Deputy Governors, Dr. Sunday Onyebuchi and Barr. Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo; as well as members of the Enugu State House of Assembly.

Also present were the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr. Victor Udeh; the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Martin Chukwunweike; heads of military and paramilitary agencies, members of the Enugu State Executive Council; council chairmen; Grand Patron of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Dr. Greg Ugwu, and several other top government functionaries and stakeholders.

Mbah started the day with the inspection of a guard of honour mounted by the Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Command.

“You have created an enabling atmosphere for all local government chairmen to thrive, excel, and deploy their creative and organizational capacities towards the success of your administration without interference,” he said.

The Nkanu East Council boss praised the governor’s inclusive governance model, stressing that the administration’s developmental initiatives have positively impacted both urban and rural communities across the state.

He highlighted several achievements of the Mbah administration, including aggressive infrastructural renewal, expansion of road networks, modernization of public facilities, healthcare reforms, improved access to quality education, youth empowerment initiatives, agricultural transformation, security enhancement, and the drive toward industrialization.

Hon. Edeh also lauded the administration’s commitment to innovation and economic development, especially the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles in public transportation, policies aimed at improving ease of doing business, and strategic investments targeted at making Enugu a leading commercial and industrial hub in Nigeria.

“From transforming the state’s infrastructure, including the development of modern transport systems and investment-driven policies, to expanding healthcare access, improving education, promoting agriculture, tourism, technology, and creating a conducive environment for investors, Governor Mbah has significantly elevated the standard of governance in Enugu State within just three years,” he stated.

He further described Governor Mbah as a compassionate leader whose dedication to the welfare of the people continues to inspire confidence among citizens and stakeholders.

“Your Excellency, your commitment to people-oriented projects and programmes has uplifted the lives of many and reflects a deep sense of service, compassion, and responsibility to Ndi Enugu. The strides you have made in promoting unity, development, and prosperity are a testament to your vision and unwavering dedication,” Edeh remarked.

Calling on opposition voices to support the ongoing transformation in the state, the ALGON Chairman urged all political stakeholders and citizens to unite behind Governor Mbah’s developmental agenda for the collective good of Enugu State.

“To those who are still in opposition, we encourage them to embrace the shining light of development and prosperity that Governor Mbah has brought to Enugu land. This is a time for collective effort and shared responsibility. Let every hand be on deck to sustain the remarkable transformation currently unfolding across the state,” he said.

Hon. Edeh concluded by praying for greater wisdom, strength, good health, and divine guidance for the governor as he continues to steer the affairs of the state.

“We celebrate Your Excellency today and always. We pray that God grants you greater wisdom, strength, grace, and good health as you continue to lead Enugu State into brighter days of peace, progress, industrial growth, and shared prosperity,” the statement concluded.
