DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL PROGRAMMES FASKARI LGEA HAILS GOVERNMENT GIRLS’ SECONDARY SCHOOL FASKARI FOR PIONEERING SKILLS-BASED EDUCATION

The Department of Special Programmes, Faskari Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) has commended Government Girls’ Secondary School, Faskari, for pioneering an innovative initiative that integrates academic learning with practical skills acquisition.

The commendation followed an impressive skills exhibition held at the school’s temporary learning centre at Faskari Model Primary School, where students demonstrated their competence in tailoring, Arabic and English debates, liquid-soap production, bead-making and other creative skills.

The highlight of the event was a live tailoring demonstration in which the students measured a colleague, cut Ankara fabric, operated a sewing machine and completed a garment, which was immediately worn and presented to the audience. The demonstration provided a compelling illustration of the value of experiential and skills-based education.

The Education Secretary, Faskari LGEA, Malam Bishir Usman Daudawa, who was unavoidably absent but duly represented by the Heads of Social Mobilisation and Special Programmes. Through his representatives, he reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to exposing students to life skills capable of meeting their personal needs, supporting their families and contributing to their communities.
In recognition of the students’ progress, the LGEA has approved the school to produce school uniforms for its students, thereby providing an authentic platform for continuous practical training.

The event also attracted significant stakeholder support. The former Chairman of Faskari Local Government, Hon. Musa Ado, donated ₦100,000 towards an additional sewing machine, while Hon. Hamza Sulaiman pledged further equipment support. The PTA and SBMC appreciated Hon. Engr. Samaila Mu’azu Bawa for his contribution to the establishment and development of the school and appealed for continued support towards securing a permanent learning environment.

The event was attended by senior officials of Faskari LGEA, including the Heads of Finance and Accounts, Social Mobilisation, Quality Assurance and Special Programmes, alongside the SBMC and PTA Chairmen, teachers, parents and other distinguished guests.

The Department described the initiative as a model worthy of sustained support and replication, noting that meaningful education must extend beyond examinations to the acquisition of practical competencies that prepare learners for life.

Education Beyond the Classroom. Skills for Life. Empowerment for the Future.

The Nigeria Governors Forum has proposed a new national minimum wage of ₦100,000, amid growing concerns over rising food prices, inflation, and the worsening cost of living facing workers across the country.

The position was made known by the NGF Chairman and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who said governors recognised the need to improve workers’ welfare in the face of current economic realities.

According to him, state governments are already engaging with the Federal Government and labour unions to reach a wage agreement that will be both fair to workers and sustainable for government finances.

The proposal is expected to influence ongoing conversations around salaries, inflation, and wider economic reforms, especially as many Nigerian workers continue to complain that their earnings can no longer meet basic household needs.

Nigeria’s statutory national minimum wage currently stands at ₦70,000 per month, though some states, including Lagos, Rivers, and Imo, are reportedly paying above the national benchmark.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has also continued to demand a salary review, insisting that workers’ income must reflect a living wage and not just survival pay.
