Friction,Weight and Mercy.
Some of you will have jumped to conclusions. Slow down. There are very few times that friction and having a few too many kilos on your frame to love is a good thing.Today is one of them. What does that have to do with mercy? I will tell you.
I just finished my workout and went to have a shower, slipped and fell. If not for my ample rear endowments, the story would have been very different.Trust me. As I fell I screamed but nobody heard. There is nobody at home. While seated on the wet shower floor, I remembered a random statement from a health and safety course a previous employer insisted that we attend.
Once an accident starts, the end result is random, unpredictable. Now this is where mercy comes into the picture. How I landed on my derriere considering how I stepped into the shower and the final position of my legs is beyond me. It could so easily have been more serious. I have attached a picture of the slides I was wearing and the wet floor. Very little friction. Smooth sIide soles, smooth floor and water. A recipe for disaster. An occasion of mercy. While I was still sitting on the floor taking stock,I remembered that I had foolishly allowed my life insurance to lapse. I have to fix that.
Please check the flooring and footwear you use in bathrooms. If you can't make the floor safer, got plastic bath mats.Or gain some weight.Mats are a nuisance to keep clean but..... If you are blessed to have elderly relatives, please check their bathroom floors and slippers. Sort out your life insurance.
I just crawled off the shower floor and back into bed to gather my wits and write this post. One twisted knee, a very sore behind but extremely grateful. If I don't hear from you, I know which list you should be on. If you feel inclined to buy me something, Aboniki would be very nice. Or a massage.Or you know what, go and take out a life insurance policy. We are all going one way or the other aren't we?
Stay safe. Please.

Know any budding poets?
Dr Akomaye Oko was a teacher, poet, playwright and mentor to many young creatives. One of the Nigerian Civil war poets, he devoted his entire life to teaching and learning. He had a particular interest in helping young writers find their own unique voice.
Readmoore House was founded in his memory and this poetry competition is our small attempt to continue Dr Oko's legacy.
Please spread the word and get in touch if you would like to be involved.

After a loooong break, I have taken up reading for leisure again. There is something about doctoral research that spoils reading for pleasure, sadly. I just finished reading Khaled Hosseini's "A Thousand Splendid Suns'.
At the risk of sounding blasé, it is truly a triumph. I have always been intrigued by the history of Afghanistan but reading this book brought it home. Hosseini makes ordinary life heroic but I begrudge him his knack for making sadness almost beautiful. His prose is beguilingly simple, his characters relatable and the pain searing. I am not ashamed to say that I cried.Several times. This one takes a female perspective on Afghanistan's turbulent history from a woman's perspective. I hear Hosseini's 'The Kite Runner' reflects more masculine perspectives.
If you are interested in commiting to reading more books and your wallet can't keep up with your literary apetite, try joining Readmoore House, Gwarinpa's only Community Library. We have reference, kids, teens and adult books by the plenty. Or join our reading club and let's sob together over beautiful writing.
Please send us a DM in Facebook or grab the Sobber-in-chief Undiga Oko Emuekpere. We've got loads of tissues.
Have a great week!
