Theme: Our Power, Our Planet
Date: April 22, 2026
Venue: Ministry of Environment, Oyo State
The Oyo State Ministry of Environment, with support from Wema Bank, the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency, and 32 FM Ibadan, commemorated the 2026 World Earth Day with a press briefing held at the Ministry’s headquarters.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including representatives of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Eco Green Club, and the Ministry of Women Affairs. Also in attendance were top government officials such as the Acting Commissioner for Environment, Commissioner for Health, Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Director of Environment, and Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics.
In his opening remarks, the President of Eco Green Club, Elijah Adejumo, described the occasion as a global call to action. He urged individuals and communities to take responsibility for protecting the environment by adopting sustainable practices. The Chief Host, Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Adewale Adeniran, emphasized that the theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” underscores the urgent need to protect the Earth as humanity’s only home. He highlighted pressing environmental challenges such as pollution, deforestation, ozone layer depletion, climate change, and land degradation, noting their growing impact on human survival, food security, and economic stability. He further explained that irregular rainfall patterns, extreme weather conditions, and declining soil health are direct consequences of environmental neglect. He called on citizens, government agencies, youth groups, and non-governmental organizations to work collectively in addressing these challenges. He also stressed the importance of regulated tree felling, sustainable land use, and reducing harmful agricultural practices. The Commissioner concluded by appealing to residents of Oyo State to actively participate in efforts to restore and protect the environment, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Media organizations present at the briefing included BCOS, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), The Nation Newspaper, Punch Newspaper, Splash FM, and 32 FM.
Following the press briefing, a symbolic tree-planting exercise was carried out within the Ministry’s premises to mark the celebration. This initiative flagged off the planting of one hundred (100) trees across the local government area, aimed at promoting environmental restoration, improving air quality, and combating climate change. The exercise reinforced the importance of practical action, encouraging citizens to plant more and waste less as part of daily efforts toward a healthier environment.
Conclusion
The 2026 World Earth Day celebration in Oyo State served as a strong reminder that environmental sustainability is a shared responsibility. Stakeholders emphasized the need for increased public awareness, strengthened policies, and collective action to safeguard the planet for future generations.
