LNRBDA–L-PRES Partnership Boosts Pasture Development, Livestock Skills and Farmer Capacity in Kwara
Beyond the Goat Artificial Insemination Programme, the partnership between the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority (LNRBDA) and the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has also strengthened pasture development and livestock capacity building at the Authority’s farm in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Under the partnership, a variety of pasture and fodder species, including Napier grass, Brachiaria, Cajanus cajan (pigeon pea), Lablab, dwarf sorghum and Mucuna, have been successfully established at the pasture development site.
The site serves as a practical demonstration and training centre for livestock farmers, providing hands-on training in pasture establishment, management, harvesting, utilisation and sustainable livestock feed production. To date, approximately 400 livestock farmers have benefited from the capacity-building programmes and practical demonstration activities organised at the centre.
The initiative has also extended its benefits to students of tertiary institutions. More than 100 Industrial Training (I.T.) students have so far undergone practical training at the centre, gaining hands-on experience in forage and fodder crop production, pasture establishment and management, harvesting, and the effective utilisation of pasture for livestock feeding.
Through these interventions, the LNRBDA–L-PRES partnership is promoting practical agricultural education, technology transfer and farmer capacity development, while strengthening knowledge and skills for sustainable livestock production.
The LNRBDA in conjunction with L-Press therefore stands as an important platform for demonstrating improved livestock production practices, empowering farmers and students with practical skills, and promoting sustainable pasture-based livestock development in Kwara State.
